Help - Looking for the perfect winter coat

RoseStar · 07/10/2021 21:45

Right, I’m in need of some help please! I have just about every coat going under the sun except the “perfect” coat for everyday warmth / water resisitant that also looks smart in rubbish winter weather.

I’d like something that’s a cross between a Burberry and a Barbour, or a Montcler and a Canada Goose. Something that is casual enough to throw in everyday, reasonably hard wearing, but also looks feminine.

It has to be black, I’ve realised it’s the best way. Would also love a bit of faux fur and a fitted waist. Any length ok but above the knee and not cropped in any way. Not wool, have loads of them. Budget up to and around £500, would consider more for something “perfect”. Love a bargain eg OUTNET or similar!

Thanks all!

Also no leather detailing, just enough detail to make it “different”?

Fjallraven? I wear a down coat of theirs that’s lovely.

RoseStar · 07/10/2021 21:55

Thanks @LuchiMangsho will look at that, does it wear well / wipe down well eg if muddy or wet?

Yes. But I also live in a VERY cold place. East coast US so I need a down jacket.

RoseStar · 07/10/2021 22:01

Had a look and they look brilliant as proper outdoor coats esp if it’s cold where you are, I may be looking for something with a bit more of a ski feel to it though (belt and fur??)

Have you looked at ski brands? Something like www.snowandrock.com/p/poivre-blanc-womens-lauren-long-belted-faux-fur-jacket-H3115442.html

I just recommended Parka London on another thread, which have a few black ones which are a bit longer and less of a ski vibe, but still on the smart side.

I actually have almost exactly this jacket from PB @TuftyRusty!! I always feel like I’m wearing a ski jacket though, in SW London, which just feels a bit wrong… I know these are first world problems but I’ve worked hard this year and would like to treat myself. I think maybe I’m looking for something like the PB coat but longer

Parks is a bit on the casual side, i don’t know if it’s the shape or fabric but they’ve always felt a bit like a sack on me

Ooo good suggestion @DialSquare , I think this style might but a bit oversized for me as am quite small but will look at links to similar!

OP posts:
DialSquare · 07/10/2021 22:35

I know what you mean. They can swamp you a bit. I'm a short arse but fat so love oversized!
I really like this one too but would be far too long for me.

This one has real fur Sad

I think I know what sort of thing you’re looking for - but I haven’t seen one! You might get some more options in a few weeks - not sure if everywhere will have their full winter range out?

RoseStar · 07/10/2021 22:52

@TuftyRusty there seem to be loads with real fur, don’t there. I was wondering if it was a more US thing? Yes will maybe wait a little, although often find all the good stuff goes so fast

OP posts:
TuftyRusty · 07/10/2021 22:56

Yes, might be. Also a bit of a luxury brand thing I think, sadly!

Nearlyadoctor · 08/10/2021 19:07

Have you looked at Holland and Cooper? Lots which are black and fabulous coats.

RoseStar · 08/10/2021 20:47

Oooh looking now @Nearlyadoctor thank you

OP posts:
RoseStar · 08/10/2021 20:51

@Nearlyadoctor some gorgeous coats here! Do you know much about the quality / warmth?

OP posts:
Nearlyadoctor · 08/10/2021 21:04

@RoseStar - I’ve bought 3 coats from H&C over the last few years. 2 really warm parka types ( similar to the new Montana parka and the outlet Cortina bomber) plus a quilted coat ( similar to the studland jacket). They have all been excellent quality and both the parka ones are very warm. Their hoods are huge though so more style than substance, although I’ve taken the fur off my longer parka to make the hood practical to use.

RoseStar · 08/10/2021 22:35

@Nearlyadoctor are you a rider, or do you wear them eg in town? They look gorgeous but as I don’t ride often (although would love to) I don’t know if it might be looking too conspicuous… a bit like the Poivre Blanc coat in SW London I mentioned earlier!

OP posts:
Nearlyadoctor · 09/10/2021 06:35

@RoseStar- I was a rider but no longer compete, but apart from their specific team jackets none of their coats would be suitable to ride in. My 2 parkas are much more comparable to say Canada Goose winter jackets. Currently fancy the Whistler puffa.
