Have cropped wide trousers had their moment already? And are these options terrible?

I'm looking for something for everyday-smartish but easy to wear. Generally I'm a very casual dresser, I've got an outdoors job (so workwear / boots) and outdoorsy hobbies so mostly wear combats/t-shirts when not at work. I need something for when I want to look just a bit more civilised - meal at the pub / work meetings / etc.

I like the understated Japanese look for this kind of thing so eg I've got a Muji top a bit like this in a soft felted yak / wool. But my skinny trousers and just-above-the-knee skirts / tights to go with look really dated now, plus being worn out.

I was contemplating either cropped wide leg trousers (almost culottes I guess) or a midi skirt. But is it the wrong time to go that route now?
I've been looking at these trousers and this skirt though not 100% sold on the colour (definitely don't want black, I'm after a warm autumnal colour)
I did rather like this midi skirt - or I like the colour/material of these trousers but they're a bit too casual (and not cropped!).

Any thoughts? What are you all wearing for that level of smartness in autumn/winter now? (FWIW I'm early 50s and 5'2" in my boots so proper short)

Have you heard of Palava ? I haven’t but they popped up on my Instagram feed… they have a bit of a landgirl crossed with Boden feel… the cords look a bit neater fit.

Some nice things on there, Divebar2021, the trousers look rather god, but the knitwear is splendid!

Oh, I like those Palava trousers - had never heard of them either, but they look gorgeous

I also like that they have a proper size guide showing all the measurements!

I think crops look awful on short people,
Much better to go full length.
Also, the tights and a line shorter skirt can still look great. It’s about how you style them. So a slouchy jumper works well with some ankle boots (not knee high, which are ageing!).

Oh, gosh - I love everything about Palava!

Except the clothes … SadGrin

I just cannot carry off that particular look, and would feel ridiculous in their stuff. Still, good to know about, so I can recommend to other people.

To be honest the trousers are the only thing I'd wear - the knitwear, dresses etc definitely wouldn't be me.
