Black tie blah blah

I have a very lovely work event coming up close to Christmas, a no expense spared award ceremony in a totally fabulous venue.

Dress code is black tie - sort of. It's quite a creative business with a lot of fairly boho people so I don't think I need a floor length gown.

What do you think to a tux or a jumpsuit? All those in favour, show me the ones you like!

Think about getting a cheap & cheerful tux from M&S or a charity shop, and customising it yourself. Silk appliqué lapels, embroidery with beads…
Just a thought.

But if your sewing kit has gone rusty, have a look at Damsel in a Dress and HotSquash jumpsuits at John Lewis.

Rent a fantastic gown.

Pippapet · 06/10/2021 22:36

I'd still go for a fancy dress but something with a twist in colour (ie electric blue) or detail (ie zebra print sash) or accessories (studded stilletto ankle boots and clutch). I guess I'd aim for funked-up black tie dress Smile

It's about what you can carry off personality wise I think
eg phoebe Waller bridge rocked at the bond premiere
What's your usual style?

LizzoBorden · 07/10/2021 20:25

Love pwb’s style but am older, fatter and distinctly boobier. I tend towards more a more masculine style - today I’m in cropped baggy pinstripe trousers, chunky Chelsea boots, a silk vest and a linen blazer. I feel a bit uncomfortable in dresses - I’m tall, broad shouldered and with a 38d bust. Really happy to spend on the perfect dress…

Probably need your size for specifics.
I'm surprised you haven't had more suggestions

I have never liked her style. I think she looks quite frumpy in a lot of those outfits.
WeAreTheHeroes · 08/10/2021 22:40

I agree - the visible hem really cheapens it too. Think I'd hire a fabulous full length dress.

LizzoBorden · 09/10/2021 08:52

I’m 5’9 with quite the rack - I think full length always looks a bit matronly.

You just need to right style of top in whatever you choose to wear in order not to look matronly. You have height on your side at 5'9".

Try a full length dress on. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised, I think full length is very elegant, especially on a tall woman.
minipie · 09/10/2021 11:58

two colour jumpsuit?

Livpool · 09/10/2021 12:30

I think if you generally prefer a more masculine style then a tux is the way to go. But maybe with a silk blouse underneath?

minipie · 09/10/2021 17:12

What about this comfy looking dress

Or this sequinned jumpsuit

That is hideous.
Africa2go · 09/10/2021 18:57

something like this

Actually this brand is really good for evening wear - some of the photos on the JL website look a bit mumsy but its fab quality and better in real life.

honeylemonteaforme · 09/10/2021 22:14

I linked Lena Dunham for the tux

Never seen Lena Dunham in anything that looked good.
honeylemonteaforme · 10/10/2021 07:59

Well kimiko this threads not about her is it? Do you have anything constructive for the OP

KimikosNightmare · 10/10/2021 09:35

The tuxedos linked to are very dull. The 2 colour jumpsuit looks like a very ordinary blouse and very ordinary black trousers.

Tuxedos on a woman at a black tie event can look stunning - if the woman is tall and slim; if not,a woman in black tie will merge into the sea of men in black tie.
