Dr Martens question again - which colour, black or pink?

I have just been into Dr Martens store - went in thinking I wanted the fur lined boots but found the lace up uncomfortable, the Chelsea looked too much like wellies and the platform lace up to clunky at the front - but I found these buckle ones which I really like.

I tried the black in store (see pic) and now trying to decide whether to get them in black or pink (also see pics).

I like the idea of pink shoes, I am tall with long legs so not overly worried about the shortening effect of colourful footwear. I mostly wear jeans or black leggings. Most of my dresses are black or blue. My main coat is deep but not maroon red.

But black is clearly more sensible and practical. Any advice?

The buckle ones are much more versatile, they work equally well with skirts or trousers. I completely agree that the laced boots look unwieldy.

TravellingJack · 06/10/2021 16:39

Before you buy, check if you can get them (both colours!) anywhere second hand - lots of people buy and end up selling them on at decent reductions. I have several pairs of DMs bought on Facebook, eBay, Depop etc, all for well under the retail price and mostly either new or nearly new. Or wait for a sale/discount, they come around fairly frequently (check Office and Schuh for this too).

In terms of colour, yes black is much more practical, but it depends if you love and will wear the pink - or if they'll sit in your wardrobe unworn and eventually get sold on!

I got black pascals. And zero regrets. And not had any breaking in pain.

@BewareTheBeardedDragon

I agree that the lace ups do look good from the front, but when you walk the front is really massive and sort of looks even more massive and unwieldy somehow. They also look horrible from above ie. the view that I would have...

The thin soles ones looked much better but had a seam right across my high instep which would not have loosened so they are out sadly.

These photos may or may not show what bothered me about the lace up.

Also they have a zip - which is good for ease, but also would be the bit that would break eventually.

Ah yes. From this view they do look a bit too chunky at the front. If this was my decision, I would go for black buckles . Purely from a point of view that they would be at he top of my budget and so therefore I would want to get as much wear out of them as possible. As nice as the pink are, the wear will be more limited.

The elastic holding the buckles on would be difficult to repair.
You cann get much nicer and better quality boots for that sort of money

Chocolatecoatedkettlebell · 06/10/2021 17:38

Have you seen the Sinclairs in the soft leather? www.drmartens.com/uk/en_gb/p/22564001?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIg67m_Ju28wIVQtPtCh0YWw1nEAQYASABEgI9IPD_BwE
They are soft and don’t have the bulk around the ankle

Blossomtoes · 06/10/2021 17:38

Are the buckles attached with elastic?

I have a pair of DM shoes with a similar/possibly identical buckle, no elastic involved. I don't see any in the pictures

I have some bright dms - passed onto me by a friends child who grew out of them (I have tiny feet!) I love them but I definitely have to be the right mood to wear them: comfortable standing out and being noticed (I’ve had other coloured dms in the past). I’m not bothered about being noticed generally Ito clothing, but that definitely does limit them a bit - I don’t necessarily wear them on my ‘I just want to go for a mooch’ trips. I do also feel slightly like a children’s entertainer in them if I don’t style them right. So with sadness I’d say go black if you’re only going with one pair.

IShoveLula · 06/10/2021 18:03

You wouldn't see them.
Often buckles are held in place by elastic - those might not be

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 06/10/2021 18:08

I tried the sinclairs too but I didn't like the very thin leather on the ankles. It felt too soft for me.

Def no elastic on buckles - all leather.

Why did pp alert me to the lavender pink version? Argh.

I will wear them with thick socks sticking out of the top so even the black will be fairly in your face as most of my thick socks are brightly coloured. I hate making decisions.

Good call about second hand. Off to look!
Sadly my feet are waaaaay too big for any youth discount 😂

Looked them up. No elastic. They're not for me.

Whitechocpizza · 06/10/2021 18:21

Black. You don't want bright statement socks AND boots.
I think the black look more expensive. The pink look s bit charity shop to me (nothing wrong with charity shopping but when you're paying that money id go black).

Whitechocpizza · 06/10/2021 18:25

Ask the gift giver to surprise you with the colour?
Just a thoughtSmile

We’ve kind of got that!
BewareTheBeardedDragon · 06/10/2021 18:33

Eek, I've been looking up pics of people in pink dms and now feeling more drawn to the pale pink. Would they be super impractical? You can get pale pink shoes cream to look after them. But im not known for keeping my shoes squeaky clean...

IShoveLula · 06/10/2021 18:36

Pale pink would be better and the lazy oaf ones are better.

@Blossomtoes, I'm an ex-DM wearer. I've had some pretty funky ones in my time but the platforms loo k a bit too one season wonder. I love chunky boots but the heart buckles and zip look IMO tacky.

StatisticallyChallenged · 06/10/2021 18:43

This thread has made me finally order the pale pink/lavender ones.

Admittedly I care little about whether things are out of season; I have no intention of getting rid of my large collection of gorgeous heels, or any of my colourful flats. I have a pair of tartan DMs with studs, a Lazy Oaf pair with pink suede, a purple patent pair...
