I’m hoping I’ve been here long enough to be allowed to start the new thread. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone’s outfits as we move into my favourite fashion season.

@Sooverthemill I love the fact you still make an effort each day even when you’re tired or having a really difficult time. I keep telling myself I need to make an effort for me - even if I’m not doing anything. I do feel better when I’m not dressed in old joggers with I brushed hair!

@EllaPaella I also like the M&S jumper - what size did you get? (Think I’m a similar size to you)

Today

  • Jigsaw cardi/jacket
  • Boden coated jeans
-Mint Velvet boots

All second hand.

These boots are wedges - I know heels are “out” and I do love clumpy boots for practicality as I do walk a lot pushing a buggy, but sometimes I still like a bit more height and glamour! So I hope wedges are not too out of fashion Grin I like them so whatever Grin

I think if you love clumpy boots with a heel, then you should wear them whatever @KiteflyingKat. Love today’s jacket. I think I need to get more into second hand clothes.

Jumper: M&S (someone linked this one up thread as being Sezane-esque; I like it).
Jeans: Jigsaw (via eBay)
Boots: Doc Martens

Get well soon @Sickoffamilydrama. I'm annoyed with myself. I went out out last night and forgot to take a photo! I wore burgundy jeggings from H&M and a floral blouse from Topshop. Just casual today trousers Jack Murphy, top asos.

Softpebbles · 24/10/2021 16:53

Hey well soon @Sickoffamilydrama

I bought some of the mint velvet ‘leather’ leggings. Tried them on twice and they are going back. Really baggy round the knees and lower leg. Figured they were only going to get worse with wear. I love the look but I think it’s one I won’t be wearing. 🤦‍♀️

Sickoffamilydrama · 24/10/2021 17:23

Thanks all had a positive test come back today so I do have Covid. Had a fever on & of so I'll watch from the sidelines in my PJs for a while.

bendmeoverbackwards · 24/10/2021 18:57

Oh no @Sickoffamilydrama I wish you better, how long will you have to isolate for?

JunieSpoony · 24/10/2021 19:13

Gah, I keep losing posts on my phone.

Today:
T shirt from a campsite
Jeans old navy
Jumper hand knitted by by mum
Favourite socks ever

Feeling too blah to get off the settee even though the house is a shit tip.

AnnieSnap · 24/10/2021 19:28

@JunieSpoony Your mum’s knitting is very impressive 🙂

Graphista · 24/10/2021 20:23

Please be gentle with me I'm kinda new to this been directed here from my own plea for help thread and will admit I've no clue on modern fashions

@OublietteBravo I was in H&M yesterday and they had green inc khaki coloured knitwear might be worth a try?

Another who can't wear wool cos it itches like mad! 1st time I've come across others with the same issue! I've spent my life having people go "what you on about it's real wool it's lovely and soft" er...no!

I've been housebound for several years and so between easing out of that and recent weight loss (gone from size 22 to 16/18 depending on the items and sizing of retailer - why is this STILL not standardised?! - still have a lot to lose) I've been on something of a "spending spree" (I'm on a ltd income so don't get excited anything more than primark usually counts as "expensive" to me a lot of the time ) last few months.

Today I am wearing a blue and cream knee length Austin reed faux wrap dress I got a few years back from a 2nd hand place (it still had tags on when I got it) which I'll admit is something of a favourite as wrap dresses suit me (apple shape they give me a bit of a waist) plus it is VERY comfy. Today is grocery delivery day for me and it's a great dress to just slip on and instantly feel "presentable" with little effort.

Tbh though when I am home - which I am most days - I'm usually in leggings and tops. I have the usual black/grey/navy leggings but I also like getting ones that are a bit "different" too

You'll get bored if I keep posting that so I think I'll post mainly on when it's days I'm a bit more "dressed up"

Yesterday was :

Charcoal M&s straight trousers
Pink ribbed v neck next sweater
Black Chelsea boots primark
Dark green puffa jacket also primark from about 5 years ago
Pink and green floral silky scarf from m&s- you'll notice I love my scarves I have loads! Partly as I feel the cold especially on my neck but also as I think they do add a little something to an outfit. They were also for a while something I picked up on my travels so a little memento of lovely trips too.

I did a "clothes inventory" earlier in the week (mainly as I couldn't find the aforementioned pink sweater and I wanted to wear it!) it bugs me not knowing what I have where (this is prob part of my ocd) so now I feel a LITTLE more organised.

It was also so I could take stock as I'm terrible for buying loads of tops (cos they're cheap) and not having enough trousers and warm clothing, which as I live in Scotland is daft!

I'm finding I'm also torn between wanting to get nice clothes to wear/be seen in and to enjoy my new size but also thinking "how long will they fit me for is it a waste to get them if they might only fit for less than a year?" (Hopefully)

I'm also not yet at a point I feel able to post pics of me if that's ok?

I'm not sure about the seasalt dress it feels a bit...frumpy?

@AnnieSnap your lovely dress you posted as autumn purchases prompted me to check out & other stories. I was expecting Horrifically expensive if I'm honest and while not cheap I was pleasantly surprised and saw a number of items I really like the look of

Doesn't look like they do my current size but if I lose more weight as planned...

The wrap cardi is lovely would I get away with a large at size 16 with an item like this I wonder?

Posting now as else I'll get too long a message to post it but I'm continuing to read and will post my thoughts hope that is ok

AnnieSnap · 24/10/2021 20:37

@Graphista welcome! & Other Stories 44 is a size 18 and their sizing is sensible. Sadly, I can’t afford horrifically expensive either. I rarely buy anything full price, but I did with the black dress, as I loved it and feared it would sell out in my size.

KiteflyingKat · 24/10/2021 20:38

Welcome @Graphista & well done on weight loss.
Absolutely fine if you’re not ready to post pictures, although it’s tricky to advise someone in detail without seeing pictures so if and when you do feel ready it would help people give you constructive feedback. One thing this thread has made me realise is it’s is not just what you wear but how you wear it. But even if you don’t want to post pictures you can still learn a lot from seeing other people’s pictures and looking at what does / doesn’t work.

Even if you don’t want to post the photos online, you could start by taking photos of yourself each day and scrutinise your own outfits - taking photos has made me realise certain things that do or don’t work on me that I’d never realised before from just looking in a mirror.

Re limited budget most of my clothes are charity shop buys, although admittedly I’m lucky to live in an area with good charity shops. I tend to buy secondhand then if I decide I don’t like it I can ebay / Vinted it and tend to be able to get my money back, or only lose a pound or two. Great way to experiment with stuff I’m unsure about, like my long skirt from earlier this week.

Sooverthemill · 24/10/2021 21:10

@Graphista I'm housebound pretty much too ( because I look after a very sick now adult daughter who can't be left) and it helped my mental health hugely when I decided to get properly dressed every day ( so for me that meant chucking out leggings and long tops which always felt like wearing PJs). I dress for me not for anyone else. I take a photo every day to motivate me and help me see what looks good on me. Most days it's just you guys on here, my DD and DH who has zero interest in clothes . So, dress how you wish, dont worry about how much stuff costs , it's how you wear it I believe. Well done on any weight loss for health journey, it's always tough. Ooh and welcome!

Sooverthemill · 24/10/2021 21:12

@Graphista what I meant is, don't worry if you feel your budget is limited , don't compare to others in that way as none of us do on here.

Graphista · 24/10/2021 21:49

@Sooverthemill love that baukjen jumper you posted 9 oct

Where I'm bad clothes wise is I HATE throwing stuff out! It can be stained (usually a mixed wash thing I use colour catchers religiously now or else make up!) or even have wee holes in and I'll keep it for "mucky jobs" - won't wear it in the presence of others - but it's stupid cos it's taking up space I need for other things. I've even been known to cannibalise them for craft projects!

@EllaPaella where are you it's so warm in oct? Love the white fat face blouse post

@20FlowerPower love your "I'm going out!" Outfit

I like blazers too but weather wise find there's a "sweet spot" for wearing them where I am (not in summer too hot, not in autumn/winter proper as it's too wet!)

But yes it's very mild here for oct too. Was out yesterday (after 4 years housebound I am managing 1 day out a week which has built up from 1 a month to 1 a fortnight) and only had the sweater and jacket on and still felt quite warm.

That mint velvet jumpsuit is gorgeous! @Sickoffamilydrama

Jumpsuits and dungarees make me look like a fat kid from Charlie and the chocolate factory!

Talk of returns etc reminds me I should really sell on a couple of items I have that I know I'll never wear. I've waited too long to return them, still got labels on but far too big for me (waist and length). I can't get to a charity place to donate BUT If there were a way to post to a charity I'd be happy to do so if that's an option anyone knows about but also selling in such a way as I would post to buyer would work for me too. Not local sales on Facebook etc as that's problematic for a number of reasons for me. Any guidance on this would be great!

It's 2 pairs of next jeans and a pair of next trousers, and possibly that seasalt dress I mentioned earlier, I'm just not sure I'm that keen on it.

Ok I'm at 12 oct need to do something will be back

Graphista · 24/10/2021 22:19

Thank you so much for the very kind welcome and guidance

2 reasons for not posting pics of me - size and "outing" I post some v personal stuff on here which I feel comfortable doing as it's anonymous and I can't be faffed constantly name changing

But I may take pics just for me as suggested to see what suits me and how things fit. I'm terrible when trying things on only looking at the front on view and not noticing esp the side on view where I often look pregnant! I'm a pronounced apple shape all my weight is on boobs and belly! Skinny legs and arms aside from slight bingo wings

Buying from charity shops not possible at the moment, though I have in the past.

and it helped my mental health hugely when I decided to get properly dressed every day ( so for me that meant chucking out leggings and long tops which always felt like wearing PJs).

Graphista · 24/10/2021 22:51

Posted too early!

Sooverthemill I'm so sorry your dd is so sick that must be such a strain for you all

I can absolutely relate to the premature quote

Except I started off living in pyjamas so that even wearing leggings and a top felt like "dressing up" at first!

And I was only doing that on grocery delivery days at first for decency's sake!

Actually I went from - pjs, not brushing hair every day, not doing skincare every day

To - leggings and a top even on non delivery days, then brushing and even styling hair daily, then doing skincare

To wearing a dress or trousers that weren't leggings etc for delivery days

To - applying make up

To wearing jewellery

and now I'm at

Decent outfit, hair done, skincare getting there (I have dermotillomania which makes things a little less presentable and mainly on my face too. It's very much subconscious like nail biting so very hard to "cure" and I'm very embarrassed by it. I used to have great skin!), make up, jewellery, accessories...the lot!

Trouble is in my head I'm still a svelte young blonde dolly bird and I'm guilty of sometimes dressing as if that is still the case and ending up looking a joke!

So I want to avoid that BUT I don't want what I wear to totally lack personality!

In my heart I'm a hippy but I'm also a military brat and was raised to "dress smart" and have mostly had jobs where conservative dress was the norm and even specified in some cases.

I'm also too short to pull off the wonderful willowy boho styling I think much as I love it!

I like chunky knits on others but hate them on me as they add very much not needed inches! But then I feel the cold so I end up layering up loads and that maybe adds inches anyway?

I find it so hard to move away from what I have worn since...the 80's?

Blouse/shirt tucked in at the waist with a collar, fine knit sweater or cardigan with a v neck over it, smart skirt (usually pencil a line at a push) trousers (at a push smart jeans), usually proper shoes/boots (which includes sandals) rather than trainers too I'm not really a trainers person I never wore any aside from in pe until I was...20/21? And I still feel quite awkward in them! Flip flops similar only really wear them at the beach but that's partly as I've yet to find a pair the toe post doesn't irritate me!

So I guess I kinda have a "uniform"? That I've had for over 30 years!

Graphista · 24/10/2021 22:54

I have bought and worn SOME fashion items over the years - mainly "going out out" outfits/dresses especially when younger as I had the figure/looks to pull it off!

The one my mum "commented" on when she saw a pic, consisting of velvet hot pants, a black satin body (first time around 90's) with cut out detail around the waist/hips and bust and sparkly ruched chiffon on the bust, totally backless mum was like "how does it hold together?!" ripped fishnet tights and red velvet studded 4" stilletoes!

So basically fancy underwear with heels

And no I didn't take a coat and I used to freeze!

Then I got married in my early 20's and rather embraced the "classic" but boring and conservative military wife styling. Which is not to say all military wives dress that way but I had a weird mindset then.

Following my split, lost a load of weight and although in my 30's I looked younger and was back going "out out" again especially as I went back to uni and was hanging out with the 18/19 year olds a bit. So short skirts, halter tops, handkerchief skirts and tops even! Heels etc again. and in the day jeans, sometimes even trainers tees and vests or hoodies (though they've never really suited me) in the summer crinkly "hippy" skirts at one point I owned a beige moleskin skirt that was big at the time (any charmed fans, almost exactly like the skirt piper wears in "brain drain" in the parts where she goes to the baby shower/real life)

JunieSpoony · 25/10/2021 01:17

Hello @Graphista! I have seen you on other threads (wwetm??) under a previous name.

I’ve just joined here and am posting a headless picture most days. I like that it makes me think about a nice outfit instead of just jeans/leggings/tshirt/jumper.

It’s also coincided with a renewed interest in skincare and makeup. Sick of walking around with beetroot face (rosacea). I’m hoping these changes will then inspire some weight loss!

I love your clothes biography! I’m really struck by how I knew who I was as a 16 year old in terms of clothes, hobbies, tastes. Obviously some tastes have changed but I could happily wear most of me teenage wardrobe right now (and for the intervening years). Or at least I could if I was still a size 8!

Sooverthemill · 25/10/2021 08:59

@Graphista you can ask oxfam for a donation bag to send back ( online) and thrift plus too. Google them. I use both to donate
