Dandruff

DH has had a big patch of terrible dandruff for the last few years, and nothing works. He’s tried Nizoral (recommended by the GP), Body Shop Ginger shampoo, Head & Shoulders, and a few others that I can’t remember now, as well various scalp massager things.

Anyone had any luck with treating it? What’s your secret product please?

Both Lush "Soak and Float" and Little Soap Company "Eco Warrior Orange & Ginger" reduced mine significantly. I'm not sure if any ingredients in liquid shampoo disagrees with my scalp, but the bars leave me less itchy and with less visible dandruff.

Well I usually just let it be. When showering just scrub really hard. But if it isnt going away, go see your doctor hun

Jijithecat · 04/10/2021 19:31

Is it dandruff or is it a dry scalp? Maybe try a hot oil treatment on it.

Cismyfatarse · 04/10/2021 19:38

MooGoo is a bloody miracle.

Helenahandkart · 04/10/2021 19:41

It’s one really big patch about 3” across, with thick horrible dandruff.
The doctor just told him to use Nizoral, which made no difference. He’s tried the scrubbing hard method.
Thanks for your tips - we’ll give them a go.

Maybe try Selsun, it has the same ingredient as the now discontinued L’Oreal
(Orange top) dandruff shampoo which was the only thing that cured mine. Selsun is the only other product that works for me and I’ve tried them all. It took a few washes to clear it and I have to use it every second wash but it does control it - and doesn’t wreck my highlights.

The only thing that works when mine flares up is the wilko own brand dandruff shampoo, worth a try only £1 and I just use when needed

Buttercup72 · 04/10/2021 20:33

I take reaction to anything containing SLS (sodium Laurel sulphate). It makes my scalp itchy and flaky, and toothpaste was causing some redness around my mouth. I switched to sensodyne daily toothpaste and herbal essences sulphate free is my latest attempt at finding a decent but reasonably priced shampoo. Might be easier for your dh if he has short hair, but mines can look quite straw like with some sls free shampoos.

From the way it’s in a patch not all over to me if sounds like it could be sebhoroeic (that is definitely spelt wrong!) dermatitis (dandruff is sometimes a mild form of that) so might need steroid creams - might be worth going to a different doctor if possible and suggesting it

PanicBuyingSprouts · 04/10/2021 21:12

DS has a skin condition that can appear like dandruff.

The only thing that's ever helped is Neutrogena Sensitive Scalp.

LMW1990 · 04/10/2021 22:43

Second the pp who suggested that it sounds like seborrheic dermatitis. Treatment with ketoconazole as an ingredient might be worth a try

GreatestHits · 04/10/2021 23:06

I would go to the GP and get it looked at if possible. You need to know what you're treating - it could be seborrheic dermatitis or psoriasis. They can prescribe a steroid lotion that will clear it up in the short term, and then you can use a preventative shampoo.

GreatestHits · 04/10/2021 23:10

If Nizoral made no difference then it's unlikely to be seborrheic dermatitis as this is the recommended shampoo for that. If it is psoriasis then T-Gel might work better. But I really recommend the steriod lotion - it's called betnovate lotion, I think you can only get it on prescription but check with your chemist in case you can buy over the counter.

Helenahandkart · 04/10/2021 23:42

Thank you all so much.
I might have some betnovate cream in the cupboard so will try that next.
He gets athlete foot as well so I thought he might be riddled with fungus.
It’s lucky he has so much going for him in other areas!
