COS sizing - glad I went in-store

I wear a 12-14, a 40 in COS trousers. Today I went in an tried on a few pairs of jogging bottom style and this translated to a small.
I'd just bought a pair of leggings in large elsewhere.
I know this inconsistency is nothing new, but I give up.

This is weirdly reassuring as I’ve just order some barrel leg trousers in a size too small as it was all that’s left.
Sizing is nonsense isn’t it, I’m a small in a lot of places but I know I’m not really a small woman. Often wonder where actual small people shop.

In COS, for non-stretch fabrics I buy a size 12 but for most other things (tops especially) I go with Small. Another shop with weird sizing, but consistently weird I find.

I bought this in an L, it's not hugely over the size it's supposed to be but it's loose enough to wear over other clothes if it's cold
