Which Barbour?

I’m thinking of buying a Barbour jacket, or something like it, for this in between weather we have before the big winter coat comes out.

I would like an olive or khaki colour and it needs to be lined for a bit of warmth and it needs to have a hood. But not be too warm or too bulky.

Can anyone recommend a particular Barbour, or anything else?

The Beadnell is popular. It's slightly fitted.

I have a man's one with a hood attached

There are differemt colours available for the beadnell. I think there is a sage and an olive, and probably a brown and a navy and maybe a lighter blue

other colours

They hold their value well, and if you look after them, last a lifetime

olive

Second autumn in navy Beadnell. I love it, but definitely recommend buying the hood too

Paddingtonthebear · 30/09/2021 18:52

Thanks! So I would have to buy a separate hood? That’s a bit annoying.

I was looking at the Beadnell first, then I saw the Durham

But then I saw the Cassley which is a newer version

Then I saw more and got a bit dazzled by choice Confused

I’ve just been looking at Barbour today. Not had one for many years. I like the collaboration with House of Hackney, and thinking of ordering Horton quilted coat

I tried on the Edna coat which is from Alexa Chung collection. I really liked it but was very long. Was also £500! I like the Pastoral coat which is a lot cheaper. Also tried the Carmen jacket which looked lovely but also very expensive

Pheasantlysurprised · 30/09/2021 19:03

Do check out the Bower wax coat.
It is modelled on the Beadnell classic but a slight bit longer in the body (which I love) and has a thicker padding. Some decent model images of the coat at Zalando if you want pic references from many angles.

If you are not 100% sure about Barbour how about this gandysinternational.com/collections/sale-women/products/womens-dark-sand-navigator-coated-cotton-jacket. I have had a Barbour for a long time but fancied a change for dog walking and something slightly warmer, this is great and a bargain too. Sleeves a little long as unisex but easily dealt with.

Itwasgoodwhileitlasted · 30/09/2021 19:07

Yes to paying extra for the hood. It has wire in it, so tends to stay put in the wind. I think I paid approximately £35 for my hood, including postage.

ILoveShula · 30/09/2021 19:17

I'd go for the beadnell out of the ones on here, or look at the barbour site. You could always look for a cheaper or second hand one.
There are different weights I think - one's sylkoil and the other thornproof. You'll need the right hood.

I am really old fashioned, and bought a Border, which is Unisex, last year, to replace my 30 year old Gamefair. I was disappointed that they had discontinued it.
I like the Border because it is roomy and my old hood and furry liner fit it perfectly Trouble is my son borrows it as apparently Barbours are great for cycling.....

RainingYetAgain · 30/09/2021 19:20

If you are near a Barbour outlet, they often have bargains.

Paddingtonthebear · 30/09/2021 19:25

I have a really nice Aigle winter parka so what I need now is something for autumn. Not too big and bulky and that can be worn for every day but also look a bit fitted and smart rather than a standard outdoor waterproof mumcoat.

There’s too much choice with Barbour I just can’t decide.

Also no idea on sizing, do the more fitted ones come up small?

Mine's a Beaufort. More pockets and plenty of a room for a big woolly jumper underneath.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 30/09/2021 19:30

Cant stand the smell of wax jackets, tried to like them and ordered an Alexa Chung colab last year, but alas the smell and lack of warmth wasn’t for me.

DollyBantry · 30/09/2021 19:30

I got one from John Lewis, I think it was sold exclusively there. It’s called ‘Utility Waxed Jacket, Olive’. It’s lovely and fitted, looks smart and is warm and practical for these kind of days before it gets really cold.
