What do you think of flappy shoulder capes on raincoats?

I'm looking for a new raincoat and as the weather is getting wetter I need to make a decision soon.

I'm finding it difficult to find a coat which ticks everything on my wishlist (nice colour, three-quarter length, snug velcro adjustable straps on the wrists, pack-into-collar or removable hood, good non-sweaty lining) - after much searching I have found a coat that does tick all these boxes but it also has this flappy cape thing across the shoulders which just looks weird to me.

I showed the attached pic to DH as trying to work out whether I am just being silly and he said "it makes her look like a bit of a show-off doesn't it"

Continuing to search but there's lots of coats with the cape thing and all the ones I can find without it are missing one of the other things on my wishlist. Comfort is my priority but I would rather not look weird and pretentious to achieve it.

Interested in what the fashion-conscious of Mumsnet think of this style? Not that I am remotely fashion-conscious myself normally.

A show off? Lol, no, not remotely. I don’t like the look but perhaps there is a practical value? I think they’re descended from Australian cattle rancher coats.

I love these coats, used to have one in the Lake District but not used much since moved. I love the little cape!
One issue I had was at 5'4 it pretty much swamped me and reached my ankles. I felt like a moving bin liner some times Grin
Seen plenty other women wearing them in cumbria, and the taller, more robust ladies all looked fab.

They make me think of posh old ladies for some reason Grin

Agree with this. I quite like it though. I wouldn't let the little cape put me off.

On a practical level, is it to keep the rain off the shoulders? It just runs off the end of the little cape?

They allow you to do this.

I've just sold on one of these because of the little cape. It's true it helps keep the rain from settling on your shoulders but I like to use a backpack as a handbag and the kerfuffle between the straps and the cape, which has poppers, wasn't worth it. But the knee length version is a good length which is hard to find without going shin-length.

Ooh that's a point @NainAGP - I often use a backpack and it hadn't occurred to me that there might be a clash there.

Thanks to others above for input - I had almost decided I was being silly and should go ahead and buy this one but will give it a bit more thought...
