Leggings for trans friend

L0stinCyberspace · 28/09/2021 08:31

A good friend is a transwoman and she mentioned that she finds it impossible to get leggings that don't slip down her waist. She'd be about a size 18 I think. Can anyone recommend any?

What’s the budget?

Nanananani · 28/09/2021 08:32

Sweaty Betty are probably a good bet, they don’t budge

I was going to say Snag too. Their models are diverse so you can get a better idea of how things fit different people.

MistandMud · 28/09/2021 08:37

Yes, it’ll be the waist to hip ratio and angle of the pelvic bones. There must be options in men’s running tights, but probably not much choice of colours.

When you say size 18, is that waist or hip?

MarciaDidia · 28/09/2021 08:37

You can get an elastic belt - can't think where I got mine - that goes over the tights and stops them falling down. If the issue is different hip/pelvis shape, that might help.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 28/09/2021 08:37

It might be better to get them for a male body shape rather than women's fit. Primark have yoga pants for men that are basically thick squat-proof leggings.

TyrannosaurusRights · 28/09/2021 08:38

Plenty of sports brands do leggings/running tights for men which I assume would be a better shape/fit on a male figure.

Babdoc · 28/09/2021 08:38

OP, your friend has a male body, not female. That means much narrower hips and pelvis, so clothing designed for women is never going to fit, in any size. The hips of the garment will be too large in relation to the waist.
Suggest they simply buy men’s leggings, perfectly shaped for them.

Worldgonecrazy · 28/09/2021 08:39

Can I respectfully suggest men’s running tights or men’s ballet tights, which are built for male hips.

Your friend may be a transwoman but their hip to waist ratio will be male, therefore the men’s clothing section would be the best place to find clothes that fit.

The actual bit on show, the leg, will still have the “legging” effect, just the waist cut is different.

I guess it depends if your friend is seeking leggings that fit or is after validation?

Bonusjonas · 28/09/2021 08:39

I have quite masculine hip waist ratio and Next suit me for casual leggings. For sports leggings I prefer Adidas.

She could probably get some custom made, there's likely helpful makers on etsy. I make leggings myself (I don't sell them though!), they're easy enough if she can sew or has a lovely friend who can then she can get the right hip size and length.

L0stinCyberspace · 28/09/2021 08:46

Thanks folks! Yes it's her male body shape that's the issue, very poorly defined waist, etc.

I think it's a 'I wish I could buy women's leggings that fit" thing for her, and I wanted to treat her.

I'll check out Snag and Sweaty Betty, thanks!

Ducksarenotmyfriends · 28/09/2021 08:47

Or perhaps she needs low waisted ones and to measure her hip size accurately. She'd have to check the length is OK though if she's tall!

IsabelGowdie · 28/09/2021 08:52

Is your friend looking to wear them under a tunic or dress? Basically asking whether the waistband will be seen.

If not I would look at an outdoor shop amd get some male long johns/ base layers. There is a large range of prices, quality and some different designs and as another poster said, if they are just looking for the legging look on their legs this will do the trick.

I also find that outdoor / active brands last much longer and are better quality than a lot of fashion brands, but they can be quite spendy.

They may struggle to get them in the male equivalent of a women’s 18 though. It depends if that is a muscled athletic build, or if they are carrying weight about the tummy.

SuperstarDog · 28/09/2021 08:56

Have they tried men’s leggings? They will most likely fit their shape better.

Gorl · 28/09/2021 08:59

I have a very masculine shape (no hips or arse to speak of, straight as a board) and the best leggings for me are Love Leggings and Next. Love Leggings in particular have a wide waistband which seems to help me. They’re a little more expensive than some brands but they’re very comfortable and good quality.

dworky · 28/09/2021 09:08

Make sure you ask for special ones.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 28/09/2021 09:09

Men's running leggings? As a PP said they need to be cut to fit a male body shape or they will not fit properly.

1mx1mChocolateBrownie · 28/09/2021 09:09

You sound like a lovely friend

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 28/09/2021 09:51

Not sure if you can still buy the actual leggings from snag anymore as they were an experiment. But ds2 tried mine on and they weren't a great fit. You might have to go quite small size-wise if you have thin hips in ratio to the rest of you.

Lovemusic33 · 28/09/2021 09:53

Snag tights are designed to fit men and women (they show males modelling them). I have just ordered some to try, I am female but I don’t have much of a waist 🤣.
