Hi All,

Can anyone recommend how to have hair colour / highlights / balayage with a allergy to what seem most hair dyes! I've had about 4 skin patch tests from different places.

Can you pls be specific if you know which hair colours (in salon) should work!!

Thank you - looks like I have an allergy to 2 components found in hair dye.. :/

Does having a balayage still affect you if it doesn't touch your scalp?

Honestly your choices are limited, you need something that is PPD free and unfortunately PPDs are used in pretty much every darker hair colour and everything permanent.

You can bleach and use crazy colours like manic panic and directions. Those have no PPDs so no allergic reaction, but they are very temporary and you won't get an end result that looks like a natural colour.

Other options are to have lots of highlights or a balayage where they can by being very careful avoid the dye touching your skin. You will probably still get small amounts on your skin when it's being rinsed off but the less contact, the less severe the reaction and hopefully manageable with antihistamines.

I've been allergic since I had a black henna tattoo when I was 18, I now either use crazy colours or I take an antihistamine as soon as I apply the dye.

Have you tried Aveda?

You can't tint but you can lighten so long as it's a bleach and not a high lift tint. So your options are balayage or highlights

@Fluffycloudland77 oh no I haven't! I went years ago to the holborn one but not in the past 5 or so years! That might be a good start

@ThePotatoCroquette amazing, thanks! I would happily get bleach for balayage - I think that would be best option I've always had highlights but don't like the idea that they go too close to my head..
