Really black tie black tie

Just been told that we are going to Burgh Island in the spring - lifelong dream - and the website says black tie for dinner and 'it is literally impossible to overdress'.

So, as opposed to my previous request for black tie help when I was a bit non-committal for a wedding where I didn't know anyone and it was a strange venue, this time I want to go big or go home.

I'm 5'5", size 14, evenly proportioned but not slim waisted enough to be hourglass despite wishing.

Hit me with your PROPER frock suggestions please! And possibly also some kind of glamorous evening coat/wrap. The venue theme is 1930s elegance but I am too fat for bias cut and too big of boob for backless halterneck, worse luck.

I'm not really any help but please come back and let us know how it went. I want to go so much.

How lovely - Burgh Island is wonderful. Nancy Mac would be worth a look, and they do some great evening jackets/shrugs. Very thirties. John Lewis website is great for looking at lots of designers - Bombshell also have stunning dresses.

Burgh Island.. i am sooo envious. I have been waiting to go there for 2 years. Just had another baby so might be another 20 before I get my chance!

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 23/09/2021 18:45

I've wanted to go since I was about 9 - it looks so, so fabulous and extra!

Thank you for all these suggestions - my favourite of course is the Badgeley Mischka ... but I think I'd better rein it in a bit. I was going to say no real budget but seeing the reality has made me change my mind. Say, up to about £300? I might budge a bit but not that much.

I love the Nancy Mac shrugs and might get one anyway, thanks for that suggestion. I think I am too old for tulle so going for 'mysterious lady of a certain age' rather than 'debutante' but I do love the Coast one. 21 year old me would have gone straight for that one without a qualm (and worn it with docs).

Keep em coming - I love nearly all of them so far and they are such pretty pictures to dream over. Am going out now, though. Will have them to look forward to when I get in.

I love Coco Fennell dresses, but maybe not fancy enough?

Nice, but I agree, not fancy enough. I want to channel my inner marchioness. I'm sure she's in there somewhere.

Green

Black

Pink

Red

All with a vintage fur shrug and perhaps a small veiled pillbox hat.

With long gloves and a cocktail ring?

I think you should go all out and hire something fabulous. It won't be cheaper but whatever you buy probably won't get worn again anyway.

Are dress hire shops still a thing? It was a long time ago, but we used to go to annual Hunt Balls and always hired our dresses.
