Going out clothes

sheeplikessleep · 21/09/2021 16:46

Where do you go for night out clothes? Gigs, dinner etc? I find it all either really young (showing tummy which I definitely don’t want) or really frumpy. I’m after a bit sassy/ feel confident …?

You need leather-look leggings!

sheeplikessleep · 21/09/2021 17:16

I am a size 10 but have a big bum proportion wise so whilst I love the look of leather leggings, they wouldn’t suit my shape sadly! Thinking jeans and a top that isn’t cropped or bralette which are everywhere and want something showing my arms ideally, rather than long sleeved. I’m very particular 😂

sheeplikessleep · 21/09/2021 17:21

Just to clarify I DONT want crop top or bralette

wombforanotherone · 21/09/2021 17:26

😂 me neither. Definitely no bralettes or crop tops necessary 🙅🏼‍♀️

I feel like topshop used to do this gap a bit. Is hush too frumpy? What do you class as sassy?

I would try a department store honestly. All the shops like Zara etc are such terrible quality it looks bad if you're past a certain age.

sansucre · 21/09/2021 17:33

Jeans and a silk camisole or off the shoulder top
Wrap leather skirt and sleeveless silk turtleneck/halter neck top (albeit with a closed back).

I really like my arms and shoulders, so sleeveless/off the shoulder is always a go-to for 'going-out' tops. I've been collecting them for years!

Yes I think I need a day trip and a John Lewis, I agree that better quality fabric and fit gets more important as we get older! I like hush but it doesn’t feel dressy enough for what I’m after. Thanks

Silk camisole sounds great but struggling to find one. I’ll take another look. I like the off the shoulder tops as well, but finding they’re all either a bit puffy or with shoulder pads 🙈

Sezane often do silk camisoles although have yet to buy any from them, mine are Equipment, Raey and Club Monaco to name just a few of the brands I have. It's worth looking at lingerie brands too as they often have something suitable.

As for off the shoulder tops, by definition, they shouldn't be puffy or have shoulder pads... The one I wear most is from Baukjen, but I also have a beautiful cashmere off the shoulder sweater from Raey. Currently, Reiss actually have a few which are nice and I'm considering.

Shopgirl1 · 21/09/2021 20:50

I have and love this top, pricey but very good quality and flattering;

I have a very similar to this black lace top (mine is black and coffee coloured)
With black trousers or skinnies and a nude bra it’s quite versatile

Thankyou for the links and suggestions, will take a look, much appreciated thanks

To my mind, that counts as a camisole!

I got a very similar top recently to that Sinead Keary one from Lipsy at Next. Obviously not silk but feels and looks nice for 30 odd quid.

Topshop is still around online at ASOS. I’ve also just bought a really nice satin look shirt from ASOS in a really heavyweight fabric. Think it was the 4th & Reckless brand.

They do excellent blazer dresses too.

sheeplikessleep · 22/09/2021 10:14

Lipsy do have some nice off the shoulder tops as well

@sansucre your style sounds great! Is the Raey one from this year?

And the wrap leather skirt?

DGFB · 22/09/2021 12:57

For going out clothes I shop at Ted Baker, Reiss and weirdly Sosander! Mid 40s

sansucre · 22/09/2021 14:04

@AnaViaSalamanca Sadly the Raey one is several years old. However, I am planning on buying this one soon. I realise this is an expensive purchase but know I will wear it repeatedly for the next decade, if not longer - I would rather buy once and buy well then buy lots of cheap crap. I buy things in terms of longevity rather than to scratch a temporary (fashion) itch. (Also, I sometimes get sent offers from Matches so tend to wait until there is some kind of discount!)

Again, my leather wrap skirt is an old Valentino one of my mother's and really lucked out with it. Have never seen anything remotely comparable to it. That said, I am considering one from Nanushka. They're vegan leather and beautifully made, but I do appreciate they're not the budget choice, so not for everyone.

AnaViaSalamanca · 22/09/2021 15:54

@sansucre thanks. The raey top looks nice, and so does the skirt on the model actually! I think matches has a good discount going on too right now

I bought a wrap leather skirt from nanushka a few years ago, but it was just too short for my comfort. A valentino one sounds amazing though!

Gonnagetgoing · 22/09/2021 16:03

Depends on your style.

I have a nice Cos black sequin top which I wear with skinny jeans, a matching black sequin blazer and a few 'smarter' t-shirts mostly All Saints etc. And the odd Zara/Whistles top. sometimes with lurex/glitter in.

Gonnagetgoing · 22/09/2021 16:07

try some of these:-

You have to tread carefully with sequins, particularly full-on sequin blazers and a 'matching' cami as they can look somewhat frumpty dumpty matronly.

@AnaViaSalamanca Nanushka treads a frustrating line between too short and too long! They're cut for those slim of hip, so know I will have to size up to ensure the skirt doesn't gap open!

I'm very lucky that my mum loved clothes and had the funds to indulge. 80s and 90s Valentino was amazing, so much more interesting (and far better made) than anything they have produced since Valentino Garavani stopped designing for it.

Joseph also have a beautiful wrap skirt. Wrap skirts seem to be a forgotten classic. Hopefully they're due a revival soon.

Well actually it's not a sequin blazer and matching cami - it's a matching top and they actually look lovely both together!

Joseph used to be my go to for satin edged tops back in the late 90s/00s when I could afford it.
