Skinny jeans / mom jeans

Please tell me skinny jeans aren’t that bad?

I hate mom jeans they remind me of what I was wearing as a child in the 90’s and I can’t change my mind. I’m 40 now and think the mom jeans is a very young casual look, what can I wear if I want to wear jeans but look a bit more classy or smart? I loved my skinny jeans tucked into ankle boots Blush

Do skinny jeans look a bit dated now - yes.

Are people obligated only to wear trendy clothes - no.

If skinny jeans are genuinely the only cut of jean you like and feel comfortable in then continue to wear them, nothing bad will happen! But if you do care about looking modern and trendy then I would encourage you to go shopping and try out a whole range of cuts - boyfriend, flared, mom, straight, culottes.... There will probably be another cut that suits you just as well as skinny do.

Bluntness100 · 20/09/2021 13:51

Christ thr shops are full of skinny jeans and millions still wearing them. Wear what you want, you don’t need to be at the cutting edge of fashion

CornishGem1975 · 20/09/2021 14:00

The only places I've ever seen it said that skinny jeans were 'dated' is Mumsnet and TikTok. Which says a lot! If you like them, wear them.

In real life people are wearing them everywhere - out shopping, on the school run, on nights out, even Shock the teenagers are still wearing them!

CuckooCall · 20/09/2021 14:04

Everyone still wears skinny jeans so I really wouldn't care too much about how stylish they are if you genuinely love wearing them. I see people of all ages wearing skinny jeans.

As far as mom jeans go...I don't mind them as such but I generally find them unflattering because I am only 5 foot 2 and they make my legs look short and wide. However, I've found that tapered leg mom jeans looks great, as do the slim leg ones you can get. New Look do slim leg mom jeans (Tori) and they look good on me. So they might be a good in-between for you.

GreatSoprendo · 20/09/2021 14:07

I've been getting on well with mom jeans in the summer - the looser fit look good slightly rolled up with trainers. Puzzled what to wear in winter though as I just can't make them work at all with boots. I think I'll be back in my skinnies

Pretendingtosmile · 20/09/2021 14:08

I've out and about today, a quick look around what others are wearing seems 50/50 split on the skinnies vs other shapes (inc. mom jeans but others too)

I'm not exactly on the champs Elysees here (south east coast) but I've had a try on of other shapes and it's skinnies for me. I might consider a straight leg if I find The One.

I'm late 30s all my primary school aged pics involve wall to wall mom jeans (in a non-ironic retro way....that's just how jeans were!!)

Stone wash, baggy about the bum, belted and tee shirt tucked in. (Tee shirt was generic fruit-of-the-loom tee shirt shape, regardless of whether you were male/female,child/adult). Shudder

I'll keep my dark wash skinnies, tyvm Smile

ZenNudist · 20/09/2021 14:09

Try m&s Sophia jeans. Quite narrow fitted on thighs, not skinny below the knee, but not like boot cut of yore. Comfy and cheaper.

KirstenBlest · 20/09/2021 14:15

Skinny jeans are still everywhere.
I usually have straight dark indigo jeans as well regardless of trends.

chestnutshell · 20/09/2021 14:35

It really just depends on your circles and context, and probably your age. I don’t really know anyone still wearing skinny jeans to be honest, everyone seems to be glad of the change and feeling more comfortable and relaxed. Nothing bad will happen if you wear them and most likely nobody else will notice but if you’re asking are they fashionable the answer is probably not.

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 20/09/2021 14:41

i am 40 odd and have been wearing mom jeans for a few years. I am thrilled to find wide leg back in the shops as IMO they suit me .

My 14yo is sticking firmly to skinnies. But she's a bit emo.

Overthinker19 · 20/09/2021 14:58

I think skinnies are def out (I wish they weren’t)

NotImpossible · 21/09/2021 14:14

I'm a similar age and love that Mom jeans are 'back' (they are less flattering on the tumny than I remember though GrinGrinGrin). But I never got into skinnies at all - the one time I caved and tried some a relative asked if I'd put on weight (I had, but the jeans did not help)! I'd say forget fashion and wear what suits you. Skinnies were all over the shops when I went a few weeks ago so somebody must still be buying them.

isthismylifenow · 21/09/2021 14:29

I went to look for new jeans yesterday. After trying on what felt like 100 pairs I came home with 2 pairs of skinnys. All of the other shapes just look ridiculous on me.

Whoever is saying they are no longer in, I have to disagree. As they were in the majority of what was available.

I am in another country though, so not sure if we are behind or ahead of you for the summer season. One thing that seems quite hard to find are decent white skinnies. Plenty of mom jeans in white but not that many other styles.

Nothanksverymuch · 21/09/2021 14:33

I agree that mom/boyfriend jeans, especially the lighter denim, looks scruffy.

I prefer a darker denim to look smart.

Apparent some of the wider leg flares/bootcut are coming back. Would something like that in a darker denim work?

Personally, I still like the skinny and baggy jumper combo for the winter.

Ozanj · 21/09/2021 14:35

I love straight leg jeans but it seems all the shops except GAP and Levi have stopped doing them.

Overthinker19 · 21/09/2021 15:12

I think the fact skinnies are still in shops doesn’t mean they are ‘in’ or fashionable, as the less fashion/trend-focussed market still needs to be catered for

Divebar2021 · 21/09/2021 15:12

I don’t know why there’s so much angst about this. Wear what you want. There are other styles around which are not mom jeans… boyfriend, girlfriend, straight etc. I personally think skinny are a bit meh but I have a low boredom threshold. Wear what makes you feel good.

MrsVeryTired · 21/09/2021 15:25

I like skinny jeans but after putting on a few pounds during lockdown am having a break from them. I like 'boyfriend' style personally, I am slightly apple shaped (as are lots who are keen on skinny jeans, usually legs are best feature imo) so don't have very big hips and they seem to look good. Tummy is my biggest problem and "Mom" jeans do absolutely nothing for me, I just really look shapeless! You need a superslim waist to look good in them imo.

By "boyfriend" I mean standard jean shape, the "wearing your boyfriends Levis" look. Slightly loose, low-ish waist, straight not super slouchy. This or this is what I mean.

Divebar2021 · 21/09/2021 17:14

I like boyfriend jeans too… they’re not too “ try hard” and work pretty well with ankle boots too.

Mummyofbananas · 25/09/2021 10:30

My very stylish teenage niece still wears skinny jeans a lot so I'm not overly convinced they're completely out of fashion. I think mom jeans look great on a night out with a fitted jacket and pulled in belt but during the day they can be a bit unflattering round the bum/tummy area I find.

I do think the super skinny stretchy type jeans are dated looking but a slim jean sitting quite high on the ankle still looks good I personally think.

Pheasantlysurprised · 25/09/2021 14:01

My mystical Meg style prediction (haha!) says that all of the wide, baggy stuff is having a 'moment' right now. Teens are wafting about in voluminous carpenter trousers/jeans and skirts and dresses are tired and billowing.

Yesterday around town I saw a 20-something in skinny jeans and a knit top just browsing in a shop and my head turned. She looked current and damned good! So no, I don't think skinnies are dated unless you are measuring against micro trends. And one could argue that flash trends date much faster than older stalwarts.

I get that the 'silhouette' often merges into something different over time, but I have honestly observed wide leg and wafty clothes coming in and out for the past 10 years, and this is great for those who like them! Nothing seems to go fully out or in anymore - so perhaps we need to update our perception of trends and resign some of the old rules to the same bin we like to put excessive consumption in to?

It's all about individual perception isn't it?

Perhaps we are living in an age of micro trends and the goal posts are shifting too frequently. Many of us will just think 'screw this' and get on with wearing what we love. Life is too short, and unless you are looking really fed up and forlorn in your clothes I doubt anyone will give two shiny shits anyway, no matter how old they are.

Pheasantlysurprised · 25/09/2021 14:04

Also want to add, I don't really like jeans in general, so usually wind up in leggings Grin

My preference is skirts and dresses but I find it hard to locate the ones I'd like or are weather appropriate. So i prevaricate for a few weeks then forget about it and go back to wearing my leggings. I always make sure the rest of me is well presented though Blush

StarfishDish · 26/09/2021 10:08

Loads of people still wear skinnies here Smile

yellowgingham · 26/09/2021 10:13

What stage of life are you at? Do you still have young DC? I've noticed a lot of mums at toddler group/on the school run are still wearing skinny jeans because they're so practical.

amylou8 · 26/09/2021 10:28

As a size 14/16 with a large belly I look hideous in mom jeans. Skinnys with a decent length top are definitely more flattering. I think it's about time bootcuts made a comeback.
