Timeless items of clothing?

Lovemusic33 · 19/09/2021 17:59

Which item of closing would you say is ‘Timeless’ (never goes out of fashion)?

Trying to buy items that will last me for years rather than one year due to fashions and fads changing.

I guess I would say that something like a denim jacket and Dr Marten boots are something I will always have and always wear. What other items are timeless?

LBD. Always useful if you have a special occasion to go to.

ShrikeAttack · 19/09/2021 18:05

I'm not sure there are really. The only things I've been wearing constantly for decades without variation would be Wolford tights, matt or satin opaque and black cashmere and merino polo-necks.

It's entirely personal too as I don't have a denim jacket or Dr Marten boots. I do have clothes that I've had for years but they're very personal to me and probably wouldn't be anyone else's 'eternal classics'!

nordica · 19/09/2021 18:06

Depends on your individual style really doesn't it? I've just got my navy corduroy pinafore dress out for its 3rd winter but I can imagine not everyone would want to wear it.

Generally though shapes/cuts and colours that are fairly basic, suit you, and are not too "out there". A basic round neck or v-neck merino jumper for example would be timeless compared to one that has frills on the shoulders or neon stripes on the sleeves.

cashmere crew neck, cashmere cardigan - I have some that are over 15 years old

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 19/09/2021 18:09

For me, the things I find myself repeatedly reaching for regardless of what anybody else thinks is 'in' are:
black leather biker
fitted, slightly cropped denim jacket
black pencil skirt and grey checked pencil skirt for work
black blazer for work
black roll neck jumper
straight leg Levis for wearing slightly rolled up
Converse
black ankle boots

you are all the style! I don't do converse or skirts but all the rest

I still have my top shop mini skirt from high school 😬.

I’ve been wearing DM’s since high school too.

I have been sorting out my wardrobe and have come across items that are 5+ years old, looked at them and laughed that I actually worse them but there’s a few items that I have worn to death for years, mainly jackets and shoes. I would love to have more quality items that will last me years rather than things that I might wear a couple times and are then unfashionable.

All the ones above for me. Plus a blazer - I have a classic Jaeger one in navy with the gold buttons - looks great worn with more casual clothes.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 19/09/2021 18:33

The one thing I've got that I've worn over and over again is a Pucci dress. It's far from "classic" - has a loud, brightly coloured print very typical of the brand. However, it is also:

  • silk jersey, so never too cold or warm
  • in a plain but flattering style, which has never really been in or out of style
  • looks good whether I'm a size 16 or size 8, or very pregnant, or any state in between
  • can work for daytime or evening, depending on it's accessorised.

Every time I wear it, I'm so grateful I bought it.

So, I'd say a versatile dress that makes you feel good to wear it.

Ohsugarhoneyicetea · 19/09/2021 18:37

A max mara cashmere coat will stand the test of time. Quality tailored wool trousers. Thick summer linen. Brands like Theory and Donna Karen have lasted in my wardrobe. Neutral colours, natural fabrics.

XingMing · 19/09/2021 18:45

Because I am bosomy but quite petite, classic covers lots of ground. I could wear @greebol's Pucci dress too. But I can't wear a top with a raglan sleeve. They double my size, whatever the fit is like.

QueenofLouisiana · 19/09/2021 18:47

I think it’s things that (on paper at least) may sound a little dull, but they last because you can do almost anything with them. Mine are:
Black knitted shift dress, short sleeved.
Navy wool full length coat, belted.
Navy leather biker jacket.
White v-neck tshirt/ cotton shirt

waltzingparrot · 19/09/2021 18:47

Chelsea Boots
Black Velvet Blazer
(it may go out of fashion for others, but never for me! )

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 19/09/2021 19:00

CervixUser - ha, ha! I'm a bloody mess most of the time, but my list might well explain why I like Autumn clothes best!

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 19/09/2021 19:22

Jeans in black dark blue and mid blue
White shirt
Black jumper
Black shirt dress
Black skirt
Black blazer
Beige mac
Navy waterproof jacket

MargosKaftan · 19/09/2021 19:35

The only ones I have that have lasted for years and don't look "of their time" are also dull choices:

Camel trench coat
Black leather jacket
Camel tailored wool trousers
Navy pencil skirt suit

All of the above were "safe" choices at the time of purchase.

PersonaNonGarter · 19/09/2021 19:43

There aren’t any timeless pieces. It’s a marketing myth.

Quickchangeartiste · 19/09/2021 19:43

My Belstaff waxed gangster jacket is about 10 years old.
I feel instantly ready in it, with dresses, jeans whatever.
Navy wool single breasted coat from John Lewis is another timeless buy.
Black suede ‘riding’ boots.
Camel skirt
Black roll neck.

FluffyWhiteBird · 19/09/2021 19:46

Interesting thread OP, I've not considered this before. I think it has to be things that make you look good.

Things I have hanging around from 10-20 years ago which I still get complements on:

Roll neck chunky jumpers, long, middling and cropped.
Bootcut jeans.
Skintight proper denim skinny jeans.
A-line just-above-knee skirts.
Knee length dresses fitted on top with a fuller skirt.
Fitted chunky hooded cardigans.
Denim jacket, slightly fitted, slightly cropped.
Chunky-ish trainers.
Duffle coat.
Casual fitted tees.
Wide leg trousers.

I suppose these are my must-have basic capsule wardrobe items then. Thanks for making me think about it Smile

Gardenwalldilema · 19/09/2021 19:53

It so depends, what looks safe and timeless on a size 16 apple will not necessarily look good on a 5'10 waif.
I think good quality, plain basics are a solid base for any wardrobe, e.g. heavyweight tweed type winter trousers, fine knit jumpers, good quality t-shirts in whatever colour palette suits you. For me its more about everything "going" together, so you always look fairly put together, rather than specific pieces.

AnaViaSalamanca · 19/09/2021 19:53

@PersonaNonGarter

Almost everything dates and even when it comes around again it’s ever so slightly different. A black blazer or a leather jacket might be something you can always wear, but the style of these change quite a lot. The collar, the shape of the sleeve, the silhouette etc. Yes you can keep classic items for over a decade and wear them, but not much more, sonI wouldn’t call anything “timeless” as such. Maybe really very basic items like silk camisoles or basic t-shirts.
KirstenBlest · 19/09/2021 19:55

I always get compliments on my dungarees. Smile
Timeless for toddlers

RiverSkater · 19/09/2021 19:56

Some things Marilyn Monroe wore off duty would be still stylish today. The cigarette pant, white shirt, camel coat, pencil skirt, roll up jeans with cowboy boots, denim jacket, pretty much what other posters have said!

Lovemusic33 · 19/09/2021 20:09

I love my dungarees but not sure if I will still love them in 5 years (I hope I do) 🤣, I guess they are something that come in and out of fashion, I remember wearing some when I was a teenager but a year or so later only pregnant women seemed to wear them, now they seem to be popular again.

It seems most black and beige items are timeless, I guess you can add accessories to make them up to date. I have a basic black M&S body con dress (my funeral or job interview dress), I have had it for a few years and at the moment it appears timeless.
