I’m trying to sort out my clothes for autumn. I put together this look for the office (it’s a smart casual place). Opinions please?

What do you think of this outfit?

Cardi belt combo looks awful. You have an amazing figure and could pull off much better structured clothes.

AnnieSnap · 18/09/2021 17:53

@SocksAndTheCity

I like the outfit (and the cardi) but I agree a more colourful dress and thinner belt might be better, although the wide one looks fine to me under the cardi rather than over it.

A similarly coloured elastic hair bobble is the solution to Flappy Belt in this house Smile

Why have I never thought of the hair bobble? 🤷‍♀️
AndTime · 18/09/2021 18:14

I like it with the belt under the cardi.

I do like the model pic you posted though, it's just the slight differences that make it work better.

Unfashionable · 18/09/2021 18:20

You have a great figure, OP. Envy I’m no fashion correspondent, but in my very inexpert opinion, the dress looks great on you with the belt but without the cardie.

slightlysnippy · 18/09/2021 18:26

Looks better with belt under the cardi, but sorry blue dress, black tights and brown cardi is not a great combo.

JBlow · 18/09/2021 18:27

Lose the cardigan. If you have got it (which you have) flaunt it

hiptobeasquare · 18/09/2021 18:28

Honestly, I’m trying to sort out my best pieces for autumn and now I want to post all my looks on S&B because you have all been so nice and helpful.

Flappy belt solution in my house is a loon band collection. My DD no longer plays with them and you can always get a colour match.

CarrotSticks23 · 18/09/2021 18:41

I really like the belt, I don't think it's dated. I can see it working with maybe a shirt dress. Something crisper and lighter in colour than the belt.

I think it's the combo of brown and blue that doesn't work, because they are both quite dull colours. Plus the combo of long cardigan, wide belt and then the double necklace is definitely something I would have worn as a teenager in the 00s, that is a bit dated. I think the look on the first page too is dated tbh, again something that was fashionable kind of 2008ish

CarrotSticks23 · 18/09/2021 18:42

You can buy clear little elastics for braids that are really good for belts. You can't see them as they are clear and they keep it in place

astoundedgoat · 18/09/2021 18:49

Look at your gorgeous waist! don't smother that in a giant cardigan, please!

High waisted dark flared jeans from & Other Stories with patterned blouse or thin knit tucked in.

Yes! Just sent my daughter out to a party with one of my belts tidied with a perfectly matching pale pink loom band. Grin
ToManderleyAgain · 18/09/2021 23:18

I think the cardigan-dress-belt combo would love more up to date if you swapped out the beaded necklace for a few more delicate layered gold/silver necklaces.

sleepyhoglet · 19/09/2021 20:47

Dress is nice. Ditch the cardi!

Neonplant · 19/09/2021 20:50

I don't want to sound harsh but the belt doesn't work. It's not very now/fashionable and looks kind of cheap. Much better without.

hiptobeasquare · 19/09/2021 22:38

@Neonplant funnily enough, I went out wearing the belt today with a totally different outfit and was complimented on it twice. As I said previously up thread, I don’t feel it’s dated, but I’m not saying I’m exactly fashion forward!

I think as the length of both the cardigan and the dress look fairly similar it drags your frame down a bit, as has been said, you have a lovely figure and finding clothes that work will make a huge difference.

brokenbiscuitsx · 19/09/2021 22:46

Not true, wide belts are very fashionable at the moment. Seen loads similar in shops and online.
Neonplant · 24/09/2021 13:04

@brokenbiscuitsx clearly you didn't feel the need to reply in a similar non harsh tone. Do you realise how rude you sound over something so inconsequential? Bit embarrassing for you.

I didn’t say you were being harsh, I just said what you said wasn’t true, which it’s not. Bit embarrassing for you.

Neonplant · 24/09/2021 19:59

@brokenbiscuitsx wow, do you really have so little insight into how you come across to not realise how rude your tone was. Also madly aggressive. Are you ok? How odd.

brokenbiscuitsx · 24/09/2021 22:06

How is this rude? But ok 😂 Anyway enough of derailing OP’s thread now.

yourestandingonmyneck · 24/09/2021 22:10

I don't see any difference between the first and second pics.

The belt is still over the cardie, is it not?

PeachMelba78 · 25/09/2021 07:14

I agree with pps about the texture and fit of the two pieces.
However I don’t think anyone has mentioned that the cardigan being shorter than the dress means you have another ‘end point’ on your bottom half, which looks really messy imo. It’s the same as shirt sleeves hanging out of a too short jumper. It’s also the reason why I go for longer winter coats as I find skirts hanging longer than a coat or cardigan look messy and less chic.
Maybe it’s just me?
