I prefer natural dyes like natratint but everything I've tried tends to be a couple of shades too dark, and definitely too 'warm', fading to an awful orangey brown. And recommendations? Has to be a box dye, salon prices are way out of reach.

Look for a colour with ash tones in it,eg. It warm so no risk of ginger or hot roots
Most box colours do come up dark, I’d say hedge of in doubt choose a lighter shade
Josh woods is a really good range plus you can book a video consultation

Try watercolour by Daniel Field. Mail order only I think but natural shades. He also does free consultations on video. Lovely fella.

Things with names like "dark ash blonde" should give you what you want.

I had the same problem and as soon as you go into the "brown" there is too much red and they fade to orange.

PaleGreenGhost · 18/09/2021 06:22

I have been wanting the exact same colour op!

I was using Daniel Field Water colour - in natural Ash brown I think. But it still always went brassy on my greys.

That's an interesting idea about choosing an ash blonde instead.

Maskedstranger · 18/09/2021 10:52

Thanks all. I never thought of ash blonde - it makes me picture a grey-ish yellow, but I guess I'm way out!

Daniel Field is great and nicely conditioning. Go lighter as it builds up over time and avoid anything that includes warm in the description.

I heartily recommend L'Oréal Excellence cool creme - the shades are extra ashy and comes with purple shampoo and conditioner. Like all box dues, they come out a shade darker - maybe this one would work for you -

@Maskedstranger did you have any success ?

I'm mousy brown and went for Dark Ash Blonde as well.

However if you are prepared to go grey, I think mousy brown is one of the easiest colours to do it from - I got fed up of dyeing so stopped.

People have mistaken my natural grey mix for highlights!

Me too! Even hairdressers have been fooled Smile

Oh thank-you - I did look at the person a bit Hmm thinking well obviously I'm going grey.

However thinking back, they were older than me, fully dyed hair and probably thought it impossible that a woman would come to work in their natural hair.

Etinoxaurus · 12/10/2021 19:23

Is it cover greys? I had exactly the same problem with everything going brassy. I’ve been using this and I’m delighted. 6 weeks daily washing and I still have most of it left.
