Would you wear something your husband thought looked stupid?

I happen to think that these summer playsuits look amazing and very flattering. I tried one on that was shorts at the bottom for a hot summery day and then a more formal one with trousers and s nice denim jacket for evening out. My husband just stood there and laughed at me and said I looked ridiculous. I like to look nice but I can't feel nice if he thinks I look silly. Should I buy them anyway and to hell with what he says? Or appreciate what he thinks looks nice on me?

How rude is he? Even if he’s got a point, there are gentler words than ridiculous.

He is presumably a perfect specimen and the very model of sophistication and taste at all times?

I get funny looks and ‘why do you wear such crazy stuff’ but after a week or so he’ll be like ‘actually that does look nice on you’

I wear things sometimes that I know dh is not 'keen' on because I like them, he is younger than me and a good dresser himself so I will often listen to his opinions on what I buy, he is never cruel though, the only time he fell about laughing and couldnt stop was when I bought a lovely sparkly body con dress that made him describe me as 'a walking sparkly condom' Grin it went back!

I tend to think if my DH laughs ( oh and he does!) that I’m doing something right! He is so straightlaced when it comes to clothes and I prefer to be a bit more eclectic. Sometimes, he just can’t get his head around some clothes I wear. The other day, I had wide high waisted trousers on in a petrol blue and wore bright green suede high heel sandals. He asked me if I’d got dressed in the dark 😂
I also have a fab midi puffball skirt in nylon and lace that I got in Hong Kong 25 years ago - I bloody love it and wear it with trainers and a boob tube. He has said he wouldn’t walk next to me wearing it 😂

My husband never comments on my clothes, and if I ask him what he thinks of something he always says "it's very nice on you". But once, just once, he really hated a batwing jumper dress thingy I wore. I don't even remember how we got to talking about it, but I wore it a few times after it and then let it go. Mostly because if he had something I absolutely hated I would wish he'd stop wearing it too.

SisterAgatha · 17/09/2021 19:46

“How does this look?”
“If you like it babe”
Means he hates it.

And it correlates to things I get compliments on too so his taste is crap anyway Wink

I agree! I have just lost a LOT of weight (nearly 5 stone) and I am dressing like a mad person but I love it. He recently asked me if I skinned a muppet for my new jacket.

DH often thinks my clothes or shoes are weird but i don't care.

Today I'm wearing a black pinafore dress and white t-shirt with black lightning bolts on it. I came downstairs and my husband started yodelling and called me 'Helga' Confused

MinnieJackson · 17/09/2021 20:47

Actually once he was right, I bought a sequined black blazer and my parents and him all said I looked like a gameshow host. I wore it in spite for a while but I looked like a dick

Bluntness100 · 17/09/2021 20:48

I wear what I wish and completely ignore him. I genuinely don’t give a shit. Very rarely he will make the mistake of saying something negative I just give him this look and change the subject Confused

Generally though he’s very complimentary. If my husband laughed at me and said I looked ridiculous I’d not need to post about it, you’d all hear me shouting. 😂

inmyslippers · 17/09/2021 20:50

Yes all the time! I dress for myself not

Love you for owning it 🤣

There are certain things mine absolutely, utterly hates - jumpsuits and dungarees are two that I wear often, likewise my Birkenstock clogs.

On the other hand, if he says something along the lines of “I’m not sure that is as flattering on you as X thing”, or “I don’t think those colours go that well together” I am more likely to consider what he has said and possibly return/change.

Nobranothanks · 17/09/2021 22:01

Mine greatly dislikes my buffalo's or any sort of platform and also doesn't like denim skirts. Gets told "good job you're not wearing it then" he's recently become concerned I may return to my early twenties goth ways and makeup...I'm trying very hard to avoid the temptation of appearing downstairs with a rose vine adorning my face (despite not having the Time/inclination/wrinkle free skin to carry it off anymore haha) 😂🌹
