How do you organise your shoes?

We keep our house in pretty decent order, apart from the hallway. It's shoes, shoes, everywhere. We live in a Victorian house, so the hallway is narrow and can't accommodate much. I also have a toddler which means that the buggy takes up valuable retail space.

We have a shoe rack but shoes are piled high on it and are pretty unsightly. I've just put away summer sandals but I dread the day when boots come out of storage...

So, the option is to minimise or to organise better, in a different space. The shoe rack would hold up to 5 pairs of shoes for each of us (toddler only has wellies plus one other pair at any time) but I'm greedy and don't see it being enough, especially between seasons.

So, how do you store shoes? Or do you just rotate them really frequently according to micro-seasons?

We have a wardrobe in the downstairs loo with shoe baskets at the bottom. My friend has a kallax in the hall with a box per person. Another friend has an IKEA shoe cabinet. Someone else I know keeps all shoes in wardrobes and just brings down the pair they’re wearing that day…
It’s hard with a narrow hallway. Ours is narrow too and the buggy has to live at the bottom of the stairs which is a pain

Ninkanink · 15/09/2021 16:07

I rotate them.

It’s only the two of us, so we have an IKEA bench/rack in the hallway (also a Victorian house) for day-to-day pairs of shoes - 4 pairs for me and 4 for him. Then he’s got 3 or 4 pairs of brogues/dress shoes in boxes in his wardrobe. I’ve got about 30 pairs in shoeboxes which are stacked up in our big room upstairs but once we’ve done up our guest bedroom they’ll be stored in a wardrobe in there.

Divebar2021 · 15/09/2021 16:12

You keep all of your shoes downstairs? I didn’t know people did this. I keep most of mine in my wardrobe or lined up in my dressing room. I rotate them and stick out of season in the loft. We also have a “secret” cupboard built into the panelling in the hallway under the stairs where my DD9 sticks her shoes. A rack in the under stair cupboard for walking boots etc and a box near the back door for flip flops and old garden shoes.

Pigtailsandall · 15/09/2021 16:31

@Divebar2021 yes, I have quite a small wardrobe and only keep my very few pairs of fancy shoes there. Everything else lives downstairs- shoes currently in season in a pile in the hallway (sigh), and out-of-season shoes in a clear storage boxes in a cupboard under the stairs. Problem is that anything in the cupboard won't get used, so it's only sandals in the winter and boots in the summer in there. Maybe I just need to cull my shoes. Shoes which I use year around, like trainers, are always out.

Shoes in the wardrobe, boots in the hall cupboard, afraid they just get chucked in though !

AlbertBridge · 15/09/2021 16:41

I've got one of the brilliant IKEA shoe racks. It's really shallow - only about 40cm deep - but holds 8 pairs of full-size man shoes.

There are loads of different version of these, some holding up to 12 pairs. I love it.

AlbertBridge · 15/09/2021 16:44

Oh, and just to say: we each keep one pair of casual shoes and one pair of smart/school shoes in the cabinet. And the rest of our shoes are in our bedrooms.

My husband stores his under our bed. He has millions.

Divebar2021 · 15/09/2021 16:48

Do you have room under your bed for roll out storage ? I don’t have the room sadly but would use them if I did.

quirkychick · 15/09/2021 17:02

There are 4 of us and we also have a Victorian house. We have a 3 shelf shoe rack in the hall with wellies, current shoes (mostly trainers). Other shoes are in wardrobes. I keep this season's shoes/sandals in the bottom of my wardrobe and out of season ones in boxes at the top of the wardrobe and swap round seasonally.

MrsPumpkinSeed · 15/09/2021 17:06

I have two ikea hemnes storage units as above.

Dh keeps his under his bed. So he uses two of the drawers for hat and laptop etc.

Good shoes are in nice boxes from amazon (heels I rarely wear)

dontgobaconmyheart · 15/09/2021 17:18

We keep most of ours upstairs (in shoe boxes or storage boxes) in respective wardrobe or under the bed, then rotate seasonally and have a couple of pairs out each at a time.

It probably helps that none of us have a huge shoe collection. I have the most and in total own 2 pairs of biker boots, 1 pair of trainers, 1 pair of wellies and a few sandals that take up next to no room.

londonmummy1966 · 15/09/2021 23:27

I keep my everyday stuff in a shoe basket under the hall table - one each of converse, flats, short boots and knee boots. Everything else is in the wardrobe in these

@Divebar2021 I'm not a huge fan of under bed storage....I like to see under my furniture and to be able to clean under it easier. Also we have a metal bed frame, so boxes under the bed would be very visible and would annoy me. Plus our bedroom is two floors up...

But this thread had given me a great idea, which is to buy that IKEA shoe storage and nail it to the back of the cupboard under the stairs. So it's out of sight and out of way [goes off with a tape measure to plan]

Although this is probably a good moment for a proper shoe cull. I have way more than I need, and some are actually not that comfortable or nice. I think for autumn, all I need is two pairs of trainers, two pairs of boots and a pair of loafers. Maybe ballet flats until the weather turns

DH has a shoe rack thing by the front door which is like an old fashioned wooden pigeon hole rack. He keeps most of his shoes in there and I shout at him when he doesn't. I loathe him keeping shoes on the floor in the hall ( tbh I hate shoes on display anyway, I'm not of the opinion that you take your shoes off when you step inside a house, gross). I keep mine upstairs in my wardrobe in boxes ( once aired after each wearing) and overflow under my bed, in their boxes. Boots ( in boxes) under spare room bed. I have the ones I am using at the moment eg all my summer sandals and 2 pairs of trainers in a row in my bedroom. DH hates this. I wear my shoes all day until dinner time when I put on my slippers. I'm a stay at home carer for an adult child and need grippy so,es to,push wheelchair. We have dogs so floors often a bit gritty hence can't have bare feet

thelegohooverer · 16/09/2021 12:05

I have a big basket in the hallway and my family arrange their shoes on the floor around it. There are wails of “Muh-um I can’t find my shoes” in the morning if I tidy them into the basket.

Everyday shoes are in/near the basket, anything occasional gets put back upstairs into the bottom of wardrobes.

DGFB · 16/09/2021 21:38

We have a Kallax from IKEA with one box per person. Works well

adrianmolesmole · 17/09/2021 01:37

I have a big Muji box-drawer type thing in my wardrobe for all my out os season shoes and a shoe cupboard in the hallway for current ones. And I swap them over when the season changes. When I swap them round I do a cull of those I haven't worn that season. There's a quite a few sandals I haven't worn this year so they'll be in the charity pile.

JMAngel1 · 17/09/2021 06:09

Oh god, shoes are the bane of my life!!
I have an armoire in the hall with baskets in and 5, yes 5!, large apple crates throughout the ground floor (kitchen diner, hallway, conservatory) for storage and somehow that isn't enough and shoes are still lying around. I put a large cushion over each crate to disguise what's in there.
I also keep the majority of mine in under the bed storage drawers and in baskets on top of the wardrobe.
We have way too many shoes.

StCharlotte · 17/09/2021 09:16

I have two under bed drawers but I can see they wouldn't suit your bedroom..

We have a built in window seat in the living room which lifts up. DH keeps his in there.

We also have a narrow hallway. I absolutely hate seeing shoes in hallways (I'm not fussy about much but that's one thing).

I’ve got rid of about 50 pairs in the past year! It had to be done...and I’m really not going to wear very high heels ever again in my life. 😔😔

It does make storage easier, mind.
