I'm sorry to add another skinnies thread, but advice needed- I live in my black skinnies- they are becoming tired and in need of replacement....what to do?

Are they an acceptable staple to buy again?

Im mid 30s, tall and size 14 (hips and cs tum) if that makes a difference to the advice.

What are your alternatives or do I just hide in black tights and dresses until the spring?

Is it the cut that you are asking advice on or colour or whether they are still ‘on trend’? If you like high waisted there are lots of other options currently in boyfriend fits, mom jeans etc. Skinny’s are less in fashion now than wide leg cuts but if you love them then who cares? Zara do great high waisted jeans, lots of different cuts, lots in black too! If you fancy a change I’d say go and try a load of different styles on. I find high waisted, lose fit jeans are so much more comfortable than skinny jeans! You might find the same! Xo

Lots of people will still be wearing them (probably for quite a few more years)

So if you like them, buy them

I am not very fashion forward at all, I live in the country, am 50 and never go out Grin yet… I am only wearing my skinnies for dog walking now

For day I now wear loose jeans (carpenter or mum style, some cropped some long), I feel skinnies are “over” but I am probably wrong (and like I say, I am not really into fashion)

Just a randomer’s perspective!

I went shopping at the weekend to replace a worn out pair of skinnies. I was open to other styles but honestly about two thirds of the jeans on sale were skinnies. Still loads of people wearing them, so if you like them stick with them.

stealingbeauty · 14/09/2021 22:39

In my opinion they look dated. Obviously if you still like them then wear them, but it might be worth trying other styles such as wide leg jeans and seeing how you feel about them.

EileenGC · 14/09/2021 22:42

I’ve just needed to replace two pairs of jeans and got skinnies again. I’m also early 20s, couldn’t care less about what’s trendy or not. I just wanted clothes that I feel comfortable in, can be combined with my current wardrobe - I’d need new tops for wider cut jeans - and that don’t make me look like I’ve stumbled into the Met gala uninvited whilst trying to match other people’s outfits.

Anordinarymum · 14/09/2021 22:42

In my opinion you wear whatever suits you. Skinny jeans will always be something women wear whether they are 'in' or not.

Rainraingoaway21 · 14/09/2021 22:50

If your current black skinnies are still good but it's just the colour that has faded I can recommend dyeing them... I used the Dylon one in the washing machine and they now look brand new for a fiver!

BlueBellsArePretty · 14/09/2021 23:06

Maybe consider boyfriend or straight cut jeans. They're just a bit wider than skinnies.

Trying to be open minded re: shapes. Any colour as long as it's black Smile.

With the new jeans shapes I have flashbacks to being in year 11 at school when I had bootcuts and widelegs aplenty. Loved being 15 don't get me wrong, but it's twenty years (and two pregnancies etc) later. I feel im in a sartorial no man's land? They say you shouldn't wear a trend for a second time around.

Agree with pp that I'd have to change my tees potentially if going with new jeans and these modern silhouettes are pretty hard to get on board with bc skinny-jeans+straightcut-tee has been my life since Kate Moss et al at Glastonbury circa 2006.

There's so much volume around now?

Two options: hide until the fashion barometer swings back to the 00s, or try to evolve.

@EileenGC I feel like young 20 something's can still do skinnies bc your youth adds an amount of credibility to any way you want to dress. I just look like I haven't cared in a decade (which is accurate)

I just want to blend in, be comfy, and not languish forever in my hey day look.

I think you need a change, OP. I also wore bootcut and baggy jeans as a teenager. I’m happy to wear the trend for a second time around though! I’m sure you can carry these trends off if you try them. But it’s good to evolve.

Chotuladoo · 14/09/2021 23:20

@Rainraingoaway21 it's a good shout with the dylon! I use a black care detergent but yes it might do the trick

I wore the super wide, baggy jeans in the 90s but they'd look bloody daft on me now! I'm sticking with the skinnies. I like fitted bottoms and a looser top on my figure. I'm a size 18 with a big bum so I would look even more voluminous in wide jeans! Qu'elle horreur!

Plus what on earth shoes are you supposed to wear with them? Can't quite get away with the massive, chunky Etnies and DCs I used to wear in my teens! 😂

Chotuladoo · 14/09/2021 23:46

@IncorrigibleTitmouse this is the quandry...I don't need extra fabric about my person, and I enjoyed a chunky sole back int' day but now???

Would I then need to reappraise my shoe options? (I live in converse, yes I am a walking tragedy)

My misspent youth in the rainy, rainy north I had damp, ripped hems until skinnies were invented. Didn't notice/care as a youngster, of course. But now I'm a mummy I just think of the laundry!
