Met Ball 2021

Just curious to see if I am the odd one out - I just sat here and scrolled through at least 50 photos from last night's Met Ball and was just baffled. The theme was American Independence and the vast majority, frankly almost all, attendees seemed to have ignored the theme or have a tenuous link to it. Most used it to dress in the most God awful, ill fitting, self aggrandising costumes they could find. I'm American and never thought that gimp outfits and masks were indicative of American independence in any form.

Of course this is fashion and I certainly don't expect boring dresses/tuxes demonstrating "good taste", and fashion is about drama and fantasy. However, couture, if the outfits were couture, should be at least perfectly fitted. Case in point - Iman had an amazing over-the-top outfit which worked because it fitted perfectly. Billie Eilish's dress could have been amazing if it was just fitted better.

The whole even just screamed "LOOK AT ME!!", which is fine, but I want to look at amazing things, not things whipped up by a colour blind, one armed drunk tailor!

The theme was

In America ; A lexicon of fashion

Inextremis · 14/09/2021 15:09

To me, it looked more like fancy dress than fashion, but what do I know?

Justmuddlingalong · 14/09/2021 15:14

The outfits at the Met ball are always out there IMHO. But with things opening up and now being able to go out out, I'm cutting them all some slack.

Isn't that what dressing up is all about?

PlatinumBrunette · 14/09/2021 15:52

I always thought it was about art - fashion as art.

The designers are the ones advertising their wares (wears?!) It's an opportunity for the slebs to be seen in an as outrageous way as possible, aided and abetted by the design houses and media 🤷🏻‍♀️

Ellewoods20 · 14/09/2021 15:53

The idea of the theme was to showcase American designers. Hence the theme In America: a lexicon of fashion.

I wondered what the theme was as couldn’t tell from the pics

MarshaBradyo · 14/09/2021 15:57

Although I did just see lots of Chanel pics and others so I’m guessing not all American designers

I'm intrigued to know what they do after arrival?
I mean I assume they all pose on the steps and then all go home?
After all you can eat, dance or sit in most of the outfits.
(Or see where you are even going in KK's case.....)

Loved Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's 'tax the rich' dress!

They have dinner and a ball. Ocean's 8 is set around the Met Gala.
