Have been wfh for past 18 months and skint so no sense of style.

I really need everything from smart clothes for office days to smart casual.

I'm early 40's, a size 14 and tall. I also suit cooler colours. I desperately need some inspiration. What are people buying for autumn. Any ideas and inspiration most welcome.

Have a look through what you have and sell anything good enough to sell. Keep the things you love or wear.

My newspaper (The Times) said by a good suit - trousers or skirt. I used to buy suits that had trousers and a skirt and plain colour shirts. Scarves, belts and jewellery can help you ring the changes.

Get a consultation with a personal shopper in JL.

Thanks for the replies. I need pretty much everything so it's a blank canvas really.

Do you have:

  • good white tops
  • good jeans
  • a jacket or cardigan you like
  • slip on boots or shoes

If you have any of the above that you can use to anchor new outfits then great. If not, try to find those four items first - then you will at least have one outfit. eBay is your friend - everyone is doing massive wardrobe clear outs.

Are you looking to do this on a budget or happy with general suggestions? What sort of office do you work in? A "suit" would only work in certain places. What is your general casual style? Do you have any friends or colleagues whose style you admire? Casual style - what sort of places do you go and things do you do?

Get on Pinterest. Make an account, search for anything and everything you think might be helpful ("casual outfit", "street style", "capsule wardrobe" etc etc). Start saving stuff you like to pin boards. Then categorise them - you can create multiple boards and divide them into sections. Hopefully you'll see patterns emerging of ideas/outfits/items you like.

Use this to decide what items you'd like to buy, now that you have ideas of how to wear things for different occasions. You will need to hunt down items through trial and error - either go shopping (very hit and miss, especially now thanks to Covid), or look on the websites of shops you like. Now you can add items to your Pinterest by either "sharing" from a website or app, or copying the link and adding it within Pinterest. So now you have a list of shopping ideas. At this stage you could write down some potential outfits and probably have an idea of what items might be the most useful. Then you just need to start buying things!

If you are brave you can try eBay/Vinted/Depop for second hand things but might be easier to get a few staple items new first, if you have the budget.

You can also check the ethical ratings of brands on the Good On You Directory, if you are bothered:

Good luck!
