Is 80s knitwear back again?

I saw someone wearing a jumper the other day that was the most 80s thing I'd seen in ages. It was a bit like this one from M&S but where M&S have a frill this woman's jumper had a much wider and straighter flap. It was a very similar colour though.

And now that it's come to my attention there seem to be absolutely loads of jumpers out there with frills, flaps and sleeve caps.

Well I just bought a batwinged jumper from Primark...does that count? Grin

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 09/09/2021 15:11

Yes it does hellswelshy. I used to have some lovely bat wing jumpers in the 80s, with a very wide ribbed waistband.

I love a batwing, and they suit me. Bring it on I say!

brokenbiscuitsx · 09/09/2021 15:54

I have a bright red batwing and it’s slightly oversized and turtleneck too. It’s my favourite jumper 🤣☺️

Long live the batwing jumper then. I will try on my Primark one and let you know how it fits. Now, if only I could find a nice batwing cardigan...

I don't know about knitwear, but I saw a women just the other day who was wearing a gathered waist skirt, a boxy t shirt and she had a perm. It was definitely a perm. She didn't just look 80s style, she looked like a time traveller from the 80s!

Then I remembered seeing a woman in a shop queue a few years ago. She was pure 80s, as in hadn't changed her hair or makeup since the 80s. She was about mid 50s, had brunette hair which was in a short back and sides but permed on the top and with frosted blonde highlights, frosted pink lipstick, blue kohl eyeliner, a roll neck jumper with a gold chain placed to fall on top of the roll neck, those gold twisted 80s earrings (not hoops but half hoops). It was incredible. I've never forgotten her because the style was so faithful, she wasn't recreating it in an ironic throwback way, she clearly just had never ever updated her look since the 80s. It was mystifying but exciting. I honestly wondered if her home was 80s too and if she had anything that was modern.

I think it’s trickle down from Gucci’s jumpers a few years ago

Fall 2016 and 17 too www.vogue.com/fashion-shows/fall-2016-ready-to-wear/gucci#gallery-collection

Won’t let me upload specific images!

Trying again

Sorry, but they were unflattering then, unless you were stick thin, and they will look equally horrid this time around.

XingMing · 09/09/2021 20:18

I can re-embrace the 1970s, with tweaks for my 50 year older body, but the 80s need very careful steps. Big shoulders, gold buttons: okay in moderation, but it's a look that turns cariacature on a sixpence.

XingMing · 09/09/2021 20:22

I do still have clothing from the 1980s, and wear some even now. There's a tweedy Stephen Marks/Nicole Farhi suit with leather trims that I might take to the seamstress to have the pockets relined. It looks contemporary again.

The ‘tank tops’ if the ‘70s are back!

mathanxiety · 10/09/2021 04:21

I knew this would happen as soon as my mum raided her attic and got rid of all my old 80s gear. Yes, it's been up there for 40 years.

I love the 70's clothes. I've been buying up a few pieces here and there for the past few years. I think I'm going to wear 70's clothes now until I die, regardless of what's in fashion. It can be my 'thing'.
AnnieSnap · 10/09/2021 19:26

@FluffyWhiteBird I wore them the first time around 😮

I love all the knits in this edit. I’m really glad high street price options are for sale now!
