Cankles anyone?

cherrypiepie · 06/09/2021 20:14

I have tried so much foot wear but it all results in emphasising my solidly turned ankle and giving a tree trunk appearance.

I appear to have severe cankles.

Converse high tops, Nike AF1, boots and tights.

Sandals seem to be ok unless they have an ankle strap. But it's soon to be end of sandal seasons.

Any fellow canklers out there and any solutions? or just solidarity.

Ooooh, me! I love the look of trainers and skirts on other people. Looks awful on me! Following for tips...!

Buggerthebotox · 06/09/2021 20:38

I wear high-ankle Chelsea Boots for this very reason.

goose1964 · 06/09/2021 20:39

I take the view that most people aren't that interested in my cankles and wear what I want Wink

Gatekeeper · 06/09/2021 20:41

fellow sufferer here...I used to sigh when reading old stories where the description of the heroine mentioned her 'finely turned ankles'. Mine are fatly turned and were always the same even when I was a skinny minnie

Fallsballs · 06/09/2021 21:24

I caught sight of mine in the hairdressers pre lockdown, you know those full length mirrors and was horrified, they appeared by stealth the fatty fuckers.
Ankle boots are your friend.

woodhill · 06/09/2021 21:25

Yep mine have never been particularly slender

Chocolatecoatedkettlebell · 06/09/2021 21:29

Long term cankle owner here.
Try Air Force 1 shadows, no the regular design, something about the proportions
Superga for white canvas trainers
Ankle boots with a dip at the front (google western ankle boots)
Black DMs with black tights
If you want to wear shoes to a posh do that aren’t stilettos try block healed mules (recent discovery)
Cropped jeans and midi dresses need to hit just the top of ankle area and absolutely not mid calf.
Big earrings

Now, fat knees…

cherrypiepie · 06/09/2021 22:29

@Gatekeeper what I would give for a finely tuned ankle.

@goose1964 I'm not bothered what other people think, just me. I don't. Want to make myself gasp in horror at my own cankles.

@Chocolatecoatedkettlebell great tips- proportions and cut have to be spot on - it's in the minutiae.

Not sure if of fate of the high tops and some much lusted after biker boots. Rejoicing in sandals this week though!

I just ignore mine, but ankle boots are good.
I’m also of the opinion that there nothing that can be done about fat knees @Chocolatecoatedkettlebell so I keep them hidden.

cannaethink · 07/09/2021 10:49

I also have cankles, I tend to just ignore them. I wear more wide trainers usually to balance them out. And I think looser jeans are working better than skinnies so that’s good. I normally don’t let them bother me but I recently bought a pair of vintage nike high tops which I love but they are so not flattering on the cankles! I think maybe some socks that come up just about the tops of the trainers will help, but finding socks that don’t give me cankle muffin top is a challenge 😁

TheSpottedZebra · 07/09/2021 16:55

This cropped trouser trend is not my friend.

On the other hand, you never hear of a broken cankle, do you?

Haver74 · 07/09/2021 18:23

It's so misogynistic that women are made to feel that "cankles" are something to be worried about. You never hear men discussing the size of their ankles!

Paq · 07/09/2021 18:40

This. Just wear whatever shoes you like!

Miseryisabutterfly · 07/09/2021 18:40

True @Haver74 but my dh has cankles… as do I 😭 I don’t think it’s unreasonable for people to complain about. I absolutely hate mine, no matter the size of the rest of me they are still there. I’m envious of people who have beautiful ankles even when overweight elsewhere.

Haver74 · 07/09/2021 18:59

I wasn't being unsympathetic, I'm just sad that it's yet another thing that only women (mostly) have to worry about.
I am now also scrutinising my ankles wondering if I have this problem Grin

Frezia · 07/09/2021 19:46

I used to have nice slim ankles until lymphoedema kicked in Sad It's shit isn't it?

Gatekeeper · 07/09/2021 21:23

My husband has the most elegant of ankles and slim, well shaped feet. It is not fair...mine are like boiled hams

MrsMaizel · 08/09/2021 00:34

Helen Mirren has cankles - some of her shoes are great for her legs but others not so . It's all about skirt length and type of shoe. She looked great at the Dolce and Gabanna show last week.

Millicentsparty · 08/09/2021 00:41

Sandals with ankle straps don't look that great on anyone really. Cuts the visual line.

Kanaloa · 08/09/2021 04:47

Whenever anyone mentions strong ankles I always think of the secret history - the female character is mentioned as having stout/strong/boyish ankles. When I was a teenager I loved that book and wished I had well built ankles. Mine are skinny so when I wear ankle boots I look like a Betty spaghetti doll but with chubby thighs.

Maybe if sandals work slip on trainers like slip on vans? Although they would show your ankles but so do sandals.

Kanaloa · 08/09/2021 04:48

Although looking back no clue why I aspired to look or be like any character in that novel. Ankles or any other part.

Coogee · 08/09/2021 11:24

You never hear men discussing the size of their ankles!

I don’t think I have ever seen a man with cankles.

Not cankle related, but I was horrified the last time I went to the hairdressers I was forced to wear a clear plastic apron instead of a gown. In front of a full length mirror. I could see so many flab rolls I thought I was looking at Michelin man's chubbier sister instead of my reflection. Anyway, the plastic apron made me so hot and sweaty I was allowed to change into nice opaque hairdressing gown instead.🥵
Hardybloodyhar · 10/09/2021 02:55

Chunky shoes the same colour as your tights work well.
I'm cackling with glee at the trend towards boot cuts and flares. Cankles and weightlifter calves eaten up by a flap of denim.

woodhill · 10/09/2021 13:12

Apparently there are exercises to reduce them a bit. My ankles swell up in the heat.

DH has lovely slim ankles
