Autumn boots - what are the rules now?

Slightly tongue in cheek, i’m obviously going to wear whatever i actually like from the available, but i feel like shoe fashion has moved on immeasurably whilst i’ve been faffing about after small children in wellies.

I was thinking about starting to make an effort again this autumn as part of a general life overhaul - i have red hair and really suit autumnal colours, and have lots of lovely skirts/ jumpers/ jackets etc from The Before Times.

But i would always have worn them with brown leather knee high boots before, 2-inch heel. I get the feeling this would now date me more than leg-warmers or fluorescent wrist-bands. So what are you supposed to wear, esp if the skirt is slightly below the knee? I have good legs but am top heavy apple shape and about a stone overweight so tend to balance out with heavier skirts. I see white trainers being worn with very short dresses or shirt-dresses, but often by quite skinny people so prob wouldn’t work with my silhouette. I like DMs but not for this sort of more feminine look. Any heavy boots are surely going to chop my legs off and leave me looking like two ungainly tree trunks. What are you all wearing with your autumny things? (Links/pics appreciated)

Ironically, I've been dithering and just ordered a pair of knee high brown leather boots. I've got a bit bored of ankle boots / Chelsea boots so have decided to embrace a slightly retro look this Autumn.

I have my "retro" black leather knee highs, a pair of brown Bluestones, and some black leather chunk heel bootlets

I'll be honest - until 2 years ago I was a footwear buyer and it was all about flat suede chelsea boots, lace-up ankle boots (like neater DMs) and 2 inch heel ankle boots (fitted ankle). Now however I haven't a clue. Everybody seems to have spent last winter in joggers and trainers.

If the skirt is longish, midi length, I think knee high boots still look fine. I personally wear Grenson Nanettes/chunky hikers, but then I wear very few skirts.

If I wanted more feminine I'd go for this sort of shape.
