So what trousers/ jeans/ joggers this autumn??

I’ve spent much of the last 18 months in Boden’s version of cuffed joggers. Comfortable, specially with elasticated/ drawstring waist, and quite flattering, because the cuff emphasises my (comparatively) slender lower legs and ankles. (Rest of me is plus size).

My only variation has been, in proper summer weather, to wear a dress, but, as I’m not confined to an office any more, realistically I’ll be wearing mainly trousers/ jeans day to day through the AW.

The obvious first step is to dig out my jeans , some of which I really liked, and check which of them I can a) still get into and b) get to feel comfortable in reasonably fast after my long elasticated ‘holiday’.
My question is, then what?

  • My jeans are all skinny and I’m happy to continue with this, but should I try to update?
  • are there some newer athleisure ideas I should be trying?
  • or any other trouser style? The only one I’d definitely avoid is anything too baggy, because it tends to make me look like a clown/ ship in full sail.
Happy to try cropped/ ankle lengths . (I’m tall)

All ideas gratefully received.

I've bought these, they're very comfortable and the white stripes flattering. I'm not sure how the model wears them under the belly button, mine are very high waisted. www.marksandspencer.com/cotton-straight-leg-joggers/p/clp60376190?color=NAVY#intid=prodColourId-60376191

I also have faux leather leggings from M&S which are amazing and of course jeans, i have slim mom jeans and skinny jeans, i am not a baggy jeans fan and dont want to lose my skinnies yet!! I have 2 pairs of jeans from Primark which are PERFECT shapewise - Vintage slim and vintage straight. I also have a pair from H&M which are lovely - i think they could be these but not 100% sure

Mom jeans

(Faux) leather leggings in black or beige/camel. These are ones I have been looking at, but don't have either so can't say how good they are. I think anything goes actually. On the various clothing sites I’ve seen everything from skinny jeans to huge 70s flares and everything in between….! Not helpful I know but I do think fashion is in a funny place at the moment where it’s basically a bit of a free for all.

Boyfriend ankle grazers or balloon jeans from M&S every time for me - fit at the waist (slimmest bit) and generous through the leg. I'm 5ft 11 size 12/14 and carry any weight on upper thighs so skinnies are a no-no for me personally.

I live in these jeans all year round, with all sorts of top and either trainers, sandals, boots or brogues depending on weather.

Pigtailsandall · 02/09/2021 12:57

I have a perennial trouser problem to a degree that I've considered some kind of a personal shopper thing. Nothing fits and suits me. I spend the summer in loose palazzo-style trousers and shorts, but winter dressing is hard. I'm between sizes, 14/16 depending on the store/style, and I have a bloated lower tummy and big bum but a fairly nipped and defined waist. Very few things fit me perfectly. I'm glad skinny jeans are out because they definitely make me look like a parsnip!!
Interested what other hourglass/pear shaped size 14/16s are wearing this autumn? I'm based in the office so no joggers or denim for me

Gherkingreen · 02/09/2021 13:03

@Pigtailsandalltail do you like wide legged styles? They're my go-to for work, not that I'm likely to stop WFH any time soon. Loads of gorgeous wide legged trousers online in M&S, Zara, Next, Boden etc. I have a lovely structured winter pair from Next and a looser crepe pair from M&S. Great with flats or trainers.

I find them really flattering for those of us with smaller waist/larger hips & thighs.

FreeButtonBee · 02/09/2021 13:06

I also have been converted to the M&S slim balloon jeans. Loose on the thighs (which are a bit chunky at the moment) but fitted waist and ankle.

Other than that I am either full lululemon leggings or floaty dresses and big cardis and chunky boots.

mynameiscalypso · 02/09/2021 13:09

I like the look of wide legged trousers but I struggle with shoes especially in winter and things that aren't trainers/are office appropriate.

WingingItSince1973 · 02/09/2021 13:32

I shouldn't read these posts! Just ordered some M&S wide leg petite trousers. Taking a gamble as I'm not the average shape 🤣

Gherkingreen · 02/09/2021 14:56

@mynameiscalypso I wear them with chunky brogues which isn't everyone's cup of tea, but I love the look, it balances me out, and foot comfort is my number one priority always Grin.
