I do not know what to wear in winter !!!!

I really love summer wear . I have a vintage look and love 1950s shape frock s with
Red lipstick , converse and cats eye sunspecs.
This look does not translate well to.winter.

I really dislike winter and winter clothes.
I read a thread about just layering up but my dresses look too thin and summery and i just look like am dressed for the wrong season.
In addition, black thick tights look awful on me as i just do not suit dark colours at all as have red hair. I look awful in muddy colours such as brown or mustard.can wear grey and greens but not harsh dark ones.

If i attempt coloured tights i look like a childrens tv presnter !! And a little bonkers as they do not suit my 5 ft frame.. wd cream thick tights be good?!. Sumilarly chunky boots cut me off at the leg and make me look stumpy for want of a better word.
Id ideally like to.wear wool or v heavy cotton 1950 style dresses but evwn if they exist what flat winter footwear would work ( cant wear any heel at all)
... i hate jeans and jumpers but would wear hi waist 50s style with a short top. ..
Any expert winter folk who like retro looks have any ideas please !!

How about the circle skirts? Slip over jumpers? Long sleeve blouses - I’m thinking seamstress of Bloomsbury.
As for coloured tights I wear navy or dark purple.

Thanks for suggestions . Maybe a dressmaker would make some skirts.

High waisted, wide leg trousers, fitted jumper or top tucked in?

Elvisinthechipshop · 29/08/2021 21:44

Vivien of Holloway do 1950s-style jeans, would look very Marilyn Monroe-casual with a fitted jumper. Not sure about shoes, though, maybe some brogues?

Actually I think I'm going to buy that outfit now...although sadly I'm not the right shape for VOH.

Absolutely cropped jumpers or the rare non cropped but shortish jumpers, with full / pleated knee length skirts. These skirts are not that easy to find mind you but I buy them whenever I see them.

For shoes converse will do fine or for harsher weather then some leather ankle boots ideally with sheepskin or fur lining.

Also there are some fit and flare knitted dresses around which could work well

Or this?

What colours do you wear OP? I have red hair and mainly wear navy, light grey and black, often with black tights Blush

LavendulaAngustifolia · 29/08/2021 22:01

Would grey canle knit or others patterned tights work under your full skirts? Not quite as dark as black opaques.

TuftyRusty · 29/08/2021 22:04

I’m thinking… High waisted trousers printed or plain, fine knit, brogues or loafers, lovely coat with a faux fur colour? Still with the red lipstick and sunglasses!

Something like the stuff they have in Collectif and similar shops? www.collectif.co.uk/clothes-c1/trousers-c15/thea-berry-check-trousers-p17340

Or the more 60s style - gingham trousers, tucked in neat top or blouse, red lipstick etc… like the main character in The Queen’s Gambit?

trunumber · 29/08/2021 22:31

jeans - turned up or high waist trousers. fitted jumper.

These shoes maybe? www.drmartens.com/uk/en_gb/p/12916001

I dunno, but I do know I googled 1950s winter fashion and everything made my heart beat a little faster! 💕

Thanks all . I wear grey. Green .blue a lot. And occasional burgendy and rust/ orrange.
The idea of high trousers sounds fab so long as proportions are right as am only 5 foot.
I love the wide skirt idea and the jeans and peddle pushee idea and viv of holloway have some fitted tops. Thanks!
The checked trousers arw fab... am over 50 and unsure if can get away with them tho.
For those wirh similar taste .. jeans at freddiea of pinewood also look yummy.!

'I'd ideally like to wear wool or v heavy cotton 1950 style dresses but evwn if they exist what flat winter footwear would work ( cant wear any heel at all)' >
If you can get hold of these dresses, great. I've recently got into Doc Martens (although been wearing flats for a long time) and, personally, I would be happy to wear any Doc Martens with that style. I think it would be a great contrast. Although you do have to wear them in.
