How would you style this dress for a wedding?

I've just ordered this Winser Miracle Dress in purple together with matching purple miracle jacket for my mum. It's to wear to a family wedding. She's insisting on wearing navy blue court shoes and a navy handbag. I can't help thinking that it would look nicer with brighter accessories - something more cheerful and wedding-y. Any suggestions please wise and stylish mumsnetters? Thank you.

If she’s insisting on navy then I guess she really wants to wear navy. It’s up to her surely?

boobashka · 28/08/2021 21:53

I just want her to look her best and think navy accessories might be a bit dark for a wedding...

I think navy would look very classy. At least she’s not killing it with black. Which brighter colour did you have in mind OP?

waltzingparrot · 28/08/2021 21:55

Personally I'd go silver or blush pink

boobashka · 28/08/2021 22:02

I wondered about these lilac croc court shoes but I couldn't find a suitable bag to tie it all together.
Happy to be told that navy will look good though. Smile

How old is your Mum and what time of year is the wedding?

boobashka · 28/08/2021 22:06

Wedding is next month. Mum is mid 70s with a dodgy hip so heels can't be too high.

I'd go with navy bag or shoes but not both together.
I do like the LK Bennett shoes.

BorderlineHappy · 28/08/2021 22:09

I do like the he shoes.
But I think silver or cream would be lovely.

Kintsugi16 · 28/08/2021 22:11

At mid 70s I can understand why she would want to go for classic navy tbh. The dress is a beautiful colour. If she feels brighter shoes would be too much would she go for brighter nails? A hat?

peboh · 28/08/2021 22:14

I think navy would be lovely. She's old enough to make up her own mind on what she wants to wear surely?

boobashka · 28/08/2021 22:15

Yes, I think anything other than navy shoes might be too much out of her comfort zone! I wondered about a navy and purple clutch to bring the two colours together but couldn't find anything!

I love leopard and purple together but she’s the one who has to wear it and feel good. The dress is lovely - I don’t think anyone will notice her shoes to be honest. But for me I’d like leopard shoes and possibly a red bag so not too matchy matchy. An embroidered bag might be good with red suede shoes too.

boobashka · 28/08/2021 22:19

@Divebar2021 you sound impossibly stylish! Sounds amazing but would be way out of my mum's comfort zone unfortunately! Smile Thank you to you and everyone else for your suggestions. I find accessorising really tricky!

Navy, and purple actually are tricky to match too as there’s so many variations in shade.

What colour hair does she have?
If grey I think the cool tones of the navy and purple would work well. Perhaps introduce a pale pink with nails and a flower/corsage to the jacket

boobashka · 28/08/2021 22:24

I like the idea of the pale pink nails and corsage @Kintsugi16. Thanks - I might suggest that. She's got browny blond hair but she does suit purple.

How about velvet navy instead? A bit more sumptuous maybe… actually any jewel tone would probably be good.

I love the pink velvet clutch @Divebar2021
Very glam - she might go for that...

Yes, Navy shoes and a different colour bag would be good. A similar intensity in colour to the dress though, that pink is good.

BorderlineHappy · 28/08/2021 23:27

She could wear a scarf as the same colour as the bag.
A nice broach as well.

Cruel · 28/08/2021 23:28

I think she needs something metallic as it's for a wedding, silver shoes would look fabulous

Ninkanink · 29/08/2021 00:20

Navy shoes to be classic and so that she can feel comfortable, then a bright bag for contrast and to look modern!👍
