Selling on Ebay/Depop etc?

Any advice/selling tips/useful search terms to include?

I have a ton of things to sell following a wardrobe clear out & looking for advice on best places to sell. I have previously sold stuff on eBay years ago and wondering if it's still a good bet? I've had a quick look at Depop too but I've never bought/sold anything via there so no idea what it's like. I'm aware other apps exist but they are the only two I've considered so far.

If it matters, it's a mix of designer, high end high street and regular high street. All of it in excellent condition (this isn't an ad BTW Grin )

I’ve recently discovered Vinted after years of using eBay. I really like it! Simple to post a listing, you set the price you want and there’s no fees!

Thanks @OlivesTree I'll take a look Smile

I tried depop, sold maybe 2 things. Sell much more on ebay still although it's weird, I go weeks without selling anything then make one sale followed by a little flurry, then nothing again for ages. I've sold old clothes and shoes on ebay for years and have to say that I'm not getting as much for things as I would have done a year or two ago.

As a buyer I really want to know what the fabric is, and measurements are useful too, especially for anything remotely vintage. Loads of pictures.
I can often be tempted by a discount if you're listing at a buy it now price.

Great advice. Thanks all. @thedevilinablackdress Yes - I'm big on fabric details too so will make sure I include them.

Measurements!
We all know how sizes can vary, I wear clothes from size 8 to 14 in different brands.
So if you post actual chest measurements etc I think people are more likely to buy as it’s less of a risk that they won’t fit.

I sell a lot on Ebay, bought cheap then flipped for a very good mark up. People buy natural fabrics, decent high end brands, new with or without tags mid range brands and of course the perennial vintage items.
I don't know why Ebay get such a bad rap on Mumsnet; the buyer is very well protected and there is good money to be made through selling.
I've tried Depop and Vinted and found them to be a bit of a nightmare, both as a buyer and seller.

I've managed to sell 3 items on Vinted, 2 within the last two days.
I have not heard back from the first buyer at all since they bought the item more than a week ago. The buyer was a newbie if that makes a difference.

Is it me or is Hermes a nightmare at the moment? There has been no new update since the "We've got it" status on 17th August. I won't give up just yet as the last two buyers seem more communicative.

I have also listed things on Depop, but they tend to be vintage and stuff I wore in my 20s that are still in good condition. Prices are more realistic rather than jumble sale price tag.

I've recently moved over to vinted over eBay and have sold loads!
Much quicker and simpler to upload items.
I have found kids clothes sell easier than adults. Worth a go as free to sell unlike eBay!

Vinted all the way! Easy to sell and lots of bargains to be had! I've just bought a pair of Levi's for a tenner, love it ❤️

You will definitely not have a problem selling as long as you price reasonably. Much easier than eBay I think - good luck Grin

@HomeSliceKnowsBest

I'd be very interested to know why you found those sites a nightmare, HomeSlice. I've never used them, but I'm considering doing so.

My top tip for selling on Ebay: give measurements! Lots of measurements. I pass by on some much because there are no measurements. I'll only ask the seller for them if I'm really keen. And yes, give the fabric content.

OhRosalind · 28/08/2021 06:59

Vinted is much more user friendly than Depop or eBay.

For the designer and higher end stuff I’d look at vestaire collective. Higher fees but higher prices and an international market.
