Just booked my first ever bikini wax. Slightly scared! What do people ask for and how much does it hurt?

And how embarrassed will I be? I'm feeling embarrassed already!

Hollywood, it shouldn’t hurt too bad if they know what they’re doing, but it depends what kind of wax they use as well.

I’d take a paracetamol before you go if you’re worried.

No need to be embarrassed, they’re professionals and have probably already waxed a dozen bits today!

Thanks for your reply, so you would go for a Hollywood over Brazilian?

Make sure the technician uses hot wax, not strip wax, I find it almost painless. They'll probably chat away about stuff to take your mind off whats happening and it'll be over before you know it 😉

Google the difference and then get what you want
I take 2 Ibuprofen before I go lol

Go for the hot wax in my opinion.

The first time is the most uncomfortable, after that it becomes less so. As others have suggested take a couple of paracetamol or similar beforehand. You may decide not to bother for future sessions. In addition, don’t have it done immediately before you are due to start a period. And it’s best not to have sex until the next day after it has been done.

Some salons offer paper knickers but to be honest, I really don’t see the point, it’s nothing they haven’t seen before, it’s their job.

As for style, it depends on, the individual, personally, l wouldn’t consider anything other than a Hollywood.

The downside of it all is that you have to allow for some regrowth before your next session; l hate the in-between stage.

The advantages are that the regrowth is much softer than shaving. For the warmer weather in particular, l find it much more comfortable (OK, let’s be candid, less sweaty!) and (shhh!) it also increases sensitivity in a very pleasant way.

Brazilian (everything off) hurts like a bitch. Bikini (only what's outside panty/bikini lines) barely hurts in comparison and is over in 2 seconds. The backside also hurts a lot less.

So If I were you I would just get those two things done, or just bikini for the first appointment if you're anxious.

If you have any sort of trimmer in the house (I use a beard trimmer) I would trim everything down before I go because it hurts more if the hairs are too long. Just be careful not to trim too short, I do about 7-8mm and never had a problem. Also helps with feeling a bit more comfortable. (Though trust me they've seen it all, they're not going to be shocked by longer hairs!)

Depends on personal preference but I feel a lot comfortable in a big impersonal chain than a small salon. The more clinical surroundings and the fact that they do it hundreds of times a week makes it feel like it's no big deal. Ofc the opposite might be true for you so think about what you want.

If you do go for Brazilian/more hair off, your skin might be surprisingly sore for a few days. For me it hurts even to use toilet paper. So you can get some things that help with that, moist toilet paper/wipes, a soothing/cooling cream, with hazel spray etc. Also jeans might hurt afterwards so wear a skirt and soft undies if you can.

The ibuprofen before does help but the most important thing is to stay distracted and not tense up. If you're not a chatty person, you could consider taking earbuds for music/podcast or can even watch something on your phone.

Most salons give you wipes to "freshen up" but you can also buy your own to use right before if you're worried.

One last tip, treat yourself to a nice lunch or drink afterwards! Really helps the pain Wink

Check the salon’s definition of the different types. Someone here has said Brazilian is everything off but that’s absolutely not the case where I live.

StarlightLady · 27/08/2021 08:01

A Brazilian wax should leave a strip oh hair and therefore high(er) maintenance.

A Hollywood is all off.

This is the language used by most salons l have come across.

Crayfishforyou · 27/08/2021 08:01

I get Brazilian waxes regularly and I find the most painful bit is just inside my inner thigh. The rest isn’t so bad. I fully wince and cringe at the inner thigh. That and, ahem, toes. Toes are baaaaaaad. So bad.
But it doesn’t last long. And when it’s done, the pain is done!
Trim hairs to the same length, it helps everything come out in the first pull and limits repeated waxing.

MrsMaizel · 27/08/2021 08:20

Tell them how much you want taken off ! I was ahem very old when I had my first time and was somewhat embarrassed but it really is not an issue . They are used to doing it . When they pull off the wax they will press down with their fingers on the area which relieves the ouch of that moment . You may be surprised as I was that they ask if you want the area around your butt hole waxed . 😂

I always have the full works. Not to beat about the bush, so to speak, poo sticks to hair.
