How many clothes do you own?

timemachinewated · 20/08/2021 12:35

Roughly how much of each kind of item, jeans, jumpers, scarves etc?
I had a massive cull over lockdown and feel like I've left myself with barely anything. I keep looking back at photos and thinking why did I give that away!

I have
Jeans - 3 pairs
Jumpers - only 2
Vests tops - about 15
Tops to wear with leggings - 8
Christmas jumpers - 0 (I gave them all away)
Going out dresses - 0
Wedding/christening type dresses - 5
A few holiday dresses
2 pairs of boots
Winter jackets 2
Winter coats 2 (1 I can't wear a jumper under it's a bit tight)
1 scarf Sad

I've spent thousands over the years on clothes, all my wages when I was eating £1000+ a month would go.. and now I've got nothing to show for it and I'm not earning so don't have the money to replace it. I had some amazing dresses for going out in my 20s and they're all gone. I mean if I had them now I'd probably feel too old for them or like they were too short - I see people saying they have items from their teens and I've got absolutely nothing!

What do you have?

I still have everything that isn’t worn out so far too much. I have now adopted a one in one out policy with intentions of doing a proper cull when I lose my baby weight as this has contributed to me needing a variety of different sized clothes. My baby is only eight weeks old so I’m hoping by the six month mark I might be able to donate and bin some of the bigger clothes!

SirenSays · 20/08/2021 13:13

Far too much to attempt to count! In a perfect world I'd have a smaller capsule style wardrobe of well fitting, flattering clothes like I did when I was backpacking.

Bluntness100 · 20/08/2021 13:14

Honestly I couldn’t count it to be honest op. Well I could but no one is that bored. 😃

Darklane · 20/08/2021 13:30

Far, far too much. Like a PP I rarely throw anything out that isn’t worn out. I too am trying to adopt the policy of one in, one out. Or better still one in, several out but I’m not great at it. A lot of the problem is that the things I have are much better quality than most things in the shops these days, natural fibres as opposed to thin, man made, flimsy fabrics that look shabby within a short time.
That’s a drastic cull! What did you do with the things you discarded, sell, charity, throw out?

Bluntness100 · 20/08/2021 13:36

Why did you get rid of it all? That does sound like a very limited amount of clothing.

MrsCatE · 20/08/2021 13:41

I have work wardrobe plus everyday stuff. I think I’ve pared down over the years but MrCat has stopped me gifting or donating stuff recently- because he says (rightly) that I whinge ‘oh that outfit - that I gave away - would have been great for this occasion’.

You mentioned Boots but no shoes? I have loads and doubt I’ll be able to wear any that have high heels because of worsening disability but they are all good quality and lovely. Sigh.

Polmuggle · 20/08/2021 13:44

As a guesstimates (this is after my own cull)

Jeans - 5 pairs
Jumpers - about 15
Vests tops - about 5 for wearing under clothes
Casual Tops to wear with jeans/ leggings - 20
Smart tops - about 20
Christmas jumpers - 0
Work dresses - 8
Wedding/christening type dresses - 5
Shorts - 5
3 pairs of boots
3 pairs trainers
5 pairs heels
3 pairs work shoes
coats - 2

Zenithbear · 20/08/2021 13:59

At least 10 of every item.
I like to have a choice. I'm very fussy about what I buy now so I'm not a fan of culling my clothes unless they aren't fit to wear anymore. I just find it so wasteful of time, effort and money to buy something unless it's perfect.

DGFB · 20/08/2021 14:13

About 50 jumpers, 50 dresses, 60-70 tops, 10 pairs of jeans, dozens of coats.
You won’t believe me but I wear a huge amount of it. I love clothes, getting dressed is a joy

AvantGardening · 20/08/2021 14:54

It probably feels like you don’t have anything but if you’re honest you probably kept all the stuff you regularly wear. The rest was just padding out the wardrobe, taking up space and giving you a false sense of security.

Realistically you weren’t going to wear your clubbing dresses from your 20s again. No matter how fabulous they were at the time.

LavendulaAngustifolia · 20/08/2021 15:19

I want to reduce it to 5 of each item. I'm sure I have more of somethings and less of others but I have enough. It all fits and its all in good condition and I have room to store it all so I won't be culling anymore.

Blossomtoes · 20/08/2021 15:38

I’ve leant my lesson with throwing things out. I’m still mourning the denim jacket that went to the charity shop in a reckless moment. I retire clothes in vacuum bags and get them out again a couple of years down the line. I’ve just got out a mohair sweater I bought in 1982 which I’ve fallen back in love with.

EssexLioness · 20/08/2021 15:49

Jeans/ chinos - 2
shorts - 1
Skirt - 1
Vest tops - 2
Coats - 4
Workout outfits (leggings and matching crop top) - 2
Jumpsuits - 3
Dresses (nice day dresses, mostly for warmer weather. A couple of them could easily be dressed up for a wedding, christening etc) - 7
T shirts / blouses - 6
Jumpers - 3 (including one Christmas jumper)
3 tracksuits/ matching loungewear for evenings/ lazy days/ feeling unwell
Pairs of boots - 4, including wellies, hiking boots and 2 smarter pairs
Shoes: 4 pairs
Trainers: 1 pair
Bags (excluding suitcases) - 3
Pyjamas - 2 pairs
Nighties - 3
Underwear - far too much!

Out of this list I find I have plenty of clothes and always dress nicely. Although I do have a couple of gaps: I could do with a couple of dresses for cooler weather, also a longer length warm winter coat. I would also happily buy some more shoes, as and when I see any I like, but I am quite fussy. I work from home so don’t need separate clothes for that and I am ruthless about if I no longer wear something/ don’t like it I get rid of it: I take very good care of my clothes so donate to a wonderful charity where all the proceeds go to animals in need.

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 20/08/2021 15:52

2 full outfits for each season. We're broke.

HopeClearwater · 20/08/2021 15:57

@DGFB can I ask how much room your clothes take up? Do you have them all in wardrobes- if so, how many?

DGFB · 20/08/2021 16:02

Sure. Three big double wardrobes, a big chest of drawers and a shelving unit. It sounds ridiculous written down but we have a large bedroom and luckily my partner has no interest in clothes!

RobinPenguins · 20/08/2021 16:06

I’ve got far too much stuff but it’s overwhelming me a bit at the moment and I’m planning a big cull. I think my problem is I’ve got loads of clothes from different stages of my life and kept them all - so pre-kids loads of going out dresses, weddings, hen dos etc. Then I’ve got loads of work dresses, skirts and blouses and stuff. But now I work from home so needed more casual stuff. It doesn’t help that my weight yo-yos so I’ve got sizes within about a 4 stone range Blush. It makes me feel a bit sick when I think how much I’ve spent on it all.

I’m aiming for more like what you’ve got now tbh OP.

ilovecherries · 20/08/2021 16:14

I joined a minimilist group on FB thinking it would help me to be more focussed. It was utterly terrifying. The sun just seemed to be to toss as much as possible of everything from cutlery, tablewear, bedding, clothes, soft furnishings etc etc. I decided it wasn’t fit me and retreated to the comfort of my own wardrobe!

timemachinewated · 20/08/2021 19:27

I think I was just fed up of my wardrobe being crammed and having to pull so much out to find anything. I also had an awful year last year and I don't think I was thinking straight! It's an awful feeling looking back and thinking why did I get rid of that Sad

Jerseygirl12 · 20/08/2021 19:54

I own a lot, especially summer clothes.

SmallGreenStripes · 20/08/2021 20:01

About 8 work outfits
One pair jeans
5 pairs harem pants
6 vest tops
4 pairs cropped leggings
4 casual dresses
Sandals
2 pairs rocket dog boots
5 jumpers

Basically a wardrobe and chest of drawers of clothes. Not much but I love and wear everything I own

Urghhhhh · 20/08/2021 20:04

Tons and tons, but only because I buy 80% of them in second hand stores for dirt cheap and I'm lazy about giving aways the ones I no longer wear.

ArabeI · 20/08/2021 20:23

You must be washing frequently to make sure you have enough to wear, OP?

Like some pps I have too much to count and list; two wardrobes, various shelves and some in attic storage. Though I don't own any jeans, that's easy enough to list (tempted to try some of the new straight leg jeans, however).

MimosaFields · 20/08/2021 20:56

So many flat the wardrobe bar collapsed last night and I spent 3 hours trying to sort out the mess. I must have about 100 dresses and at least 120 pairs of shoes. There's a big bag by the door now, ready to go to charity.

LaurieFairyCake · 20/08/2021 23:06

15 clothing rails

89 drawers

Approximately 250 pairs of shoes/boots

I have one room 24 by 14 which is my dressing room
