Beach cover up tips.

I’m going on holiday next week to a hot location and need some beach/general hot weather cover up tips. All my life I’ve sunbathed ever summer but now sadly have had about 10 separate cases of skin cancer so this year have only been out in the sun with full factor 50 on and also wearing quite covered up clothing. This will be my first holiday where I won’t be able to wear my usual holiday capsule and I’m a bit lost on what to buy snd wear. I ordered a white stuff beach shirt which has arrived and fits ok. I’m also waiting on a Lands End Clothing rash vest and some shots I can wear for paddle boarding etc.
I’m 52 and up until the pandemic wore small bright bikinis with little cover ups and short dresses and skirts in the evening. I need to protect my thighs, back, chest area and nose in particular.

Ah bless you, next week! I’d read next year and was going to advise not going Shock
There was a thread recently about modest swimwear linking to some lovely Muslim wear, really lovely for swimming but I guess super hot for sunbathing.
Flowers don’t go on a beach holiday in summer next year!

Jerseygirl12 · 16/08/2021 15:26

I know I wish I wasn’t going, my DH talked me into it. I like to cruise now as I can be indoors a lot and not feel as if I’m missing out.
I don’t plan to sunbathe at all, more sit around under an umbrella with a lot of cool clothes on plus do sightseeing.
I’ll do a mumsnet search for modest swimwear. Thank you.

Ideally you should wear a burkini with the head covering and sunblock on your nose. There are some beautiful ones but those are expensive (the target market is rich middle easterns so I would argue you won’t get a good quality one for under £100). Another option is to wear a lightweight / summer wet suit with a wide brim hat and lots of sunblock. I would also wear spf indoors (in some hot countries you can tan indoors even with windows closed!) and avoid going outside between 10-2.

What country are you going to? If Dubai or asia beach areas are lively well into the night too; so that might be the best time to have a swim.

Jerseygirl12 · 16/08/2021 15:32

Thank you, I hadn’t thought of a Burkini.
I am going to Crete.

A few hats - big glamorous straw hat, straw trilby, visor, something from an outdoor store for paddling boarding etc.

Cotton kaftans - often open-necked so yoi might need a light cotton scarf to protect your neck/decolletage. Make it damp with non-salty water before wearing to keep cool.

Get your finger and toenails done a fabulous colour and channel a 1920s glamourista

Palavah thank you, lots of good tips.

I'm currently experiencing extreme sun sensitivity (its lovely, I bleed into my skin, tests ongoing to find out why) and the Uniglo UV collection is a complete lifesaver for me as I need to totally cover up. The hoodies are great and very airy so not hot at all and cover the backs of your hands and right up your neck.
I also have some sun sleeves which are great with a 3/4 length sleeve tunic - on me they are tricky with a short sleeve like a t shirt as I have to hoik them up but I am tall.
For paddle boarding, Decathlon have great UV protection leggings in their surf stuff with matching long sleeved top. I swim in mine and they are comfy, stay put (the Lands End one tends to balloon with each stroke when swimming) and do the job

CMOTDibbler thank you so much, that is all so helpful.

www2.next.co.uk/g25295s2/758445#758445 I tried this on last week and it was lovely (I didn't realise it was meant to be off the shoulder, so I wore it like it was a round neck, on the shoulder dress). It would be lovely for floating about a hot place with a big hat.

On the top if you only need to cover chest and back look for rash vests. Very light and swimmable in.

I’ve just seen these online.
That’s a good website- lots there! Hope you have a fab time and don’t hold back on eating later, air conditioning in the room etc. You have very good reason to insist that your comfort and safety are the #1 priority.

Thank you so much, all your posts have been very helpful.
It got me thinking and I’ve actually slightly changed my holiday. I’m now going to a different hotel and we will have a car so will do more sightseeing, including long lunches in the shade and then enjoy the hotel facilities etc when it’s cooler after our days out. The original holiday was making me anxious.
