This trend has been with us for some time now.. they are so practical, goes with so many outfits, lots of types to go for...but when I was a kid this was not a thing. Now sooo many people wearing them, they are ubiquitous, I'm thinking, when do you reach the point where they just go out completely? Or is it the shoe equivalent of jeans; a permanent fixture? Maybe this has already happened and I'm oblivious?!

We used to have shoe whitening stuff when I was a kid so it has been around for decades, I’m nearly 50!

I'm a 90s tween/teen so they've been thing since then for me, can't see why it would stop?

standard basic item of clothing for my whole life

Never owned a pair. Life is boring without colour.

Yes I remember that stuff! In fact you could get it in various colours, we were skint so I always looking to cheap ways to make my shabby clothes looks better / last longer. That stuff used to look ok for a bit then it would crack, peel off and the shoes looked rubbish again! Ah, the 80's!!

I did a bit of people watching yesterday and the only white trainers I saw on women were with jeans. With dresses most people were wearing either coloured trainers (proper trainers not tennis shoes) that matched their dress or platform sandals

I hear you, OP. White trainers with jeans were for many years the hallmark of the nerd. After the brief late 80s/early 90s reign of the terrible glittery laces hi top Jordache style trainers, when the cool people started wearing vintage Adidas. Don’t be offended, lifelong white trainer adherents!

I sense that the days of the white trainer are numbered. By next spring I think that fashion will have moved on. White trainers look good with slim cropped or rolled up jeans, and shorts. Jeans are already moving towards being wider, and longer, and white trainers won’t work with them.

Are people confusing white trainers eg Nike with white supergas or similar? I have about 20 pairs of trainers & will always have a white trainer in my trainer wardrobe only granted they often have a coloured swoosh or stripes.

Trainers will never go out of fashion, they may not always be the ultimate shoe of choice but they will always be a huge market.

We all wore white trainers with combats / baggy jeans in the 90s. I LOVE that whole vibe.

Hopdathelf · 16/08/2021 16:25

I’m really hoping this sticks around like ballet flats or skinny jeans. We finally have a trend that is inclusive in the sense it suits all ages, can be done cheaply and is comfy.

nordica · 16/08/2021 17:27

I was born in the 80s and I'm sure they were around when I was growing up.

I love trainers/tennis shoes although prefer black or colours on me.

Geamhradh · 16/08/2021 17:33

I wore white leather sneakers called Paredes from Spain in the early 80s, Keds (the most uncomfortable shoes ever) in the 90s, along with Superga.
Now with the Holy Grail of the Fitflop Rally I'm home.
