Help! Hair style advice for wedding

I am off to a wedding - hooray! Except it's moderately posh so the hats will be out. I have a large hat style fascinator (hatinator except I hate that word) which is held on an alice band. I need to cover the band with my hair. This is where the trouble lies.

My hair is collarbone length, poker straight and stupidly thin and fine. As in, in a pony tail with all my hair it is only as thick as my forefinger. It won't hold a wave.

Can you wise people suggest a way of dealing with my hair to suit the chosen hat and occasion? (Other than a wig...)

What about a really sleek ponytail? Tie it back really tight and smoothly and up the dark eye makeup? Could look really classy and edgy
