Gleneagles Autumn/Winter wardrobe

Chickfilay · 14/08/2021 16:06

I'm wanting to treat my husband to a stay at gleneagles in the autumn, early winter. Its bound to be cold, wet and muddy. Which I'm fine with. I'm going to need new clothes for winter anyway, so thinking about things I'll need. Any tips? I'm thinking warm coat/jacket, boots, dinner outfit... day outfits... his birthday will cost him a fortune. Grin
As an idea, we are fairly casual as a couple, he loves his original barbour jacket and wears jeans and rugby shirts (old fashioned cotton ones). I wear a uniform so my normal clothes are running gear or jeans and jumpers. Or walking gear.
I'm overweight atm, size 14, huge calves, huge! 5ft 7. I'm hoping to lose weight before it. But have never been smaller than a 12, so figure that's the best I can do. Large bust, not much of a bum. Love a bargain.
So. Yeah, help. Please.

Have you been to Gleneagles before? This is probably not going to answer your question but honestly anything goes there. It's not stuffy at all despite being an amazing hotel. Just wear whatever you're comfortable in and have a great time. I'm very jealous!

Chickfilay · 14/08/2021 18:56

I haven't been before, no, but been to similar places and that's what attracts me to it, great good, relaxed ambience, just very classy but chilled. I just have a total fashion rut atm and need some new stuff. Plus I want to look beautiful, in a very understated way. I've never looked beautiful!
Thank you, I'm very excited too. Im planning to treat him to land-rover driving and some other stuff, have an amazing dinner and really just relax. But I think I want to dress up a bit for dinner.

Yes I would definitely dress up for dinner. The two main restaurants are really formal and worth dressing up for! Maybe wait until the ships have more autumn/winter clothes in stock and see what you think. It's all summer sales stock at the moment.

Chickfilay · 14/08/2021 21:01

Thanks, good idea, I'm not really into fashion so I'm hoping for more just classic wear, something I'll be using for years. I'll maybe need a nice trip to the shops in a few weeks. Definitely need new underwear. Its been too long.

I’ve only been in spring/summer but found that people wore very relaxed, outdoorsy suitable clothing during the day, jeans and jumper with boots would be fine during winter.

Dress up for dinner/drinks definitely.

Have fun, it’s a beautiful hotel and great fun!

Chickfilay · 17/08/2021 23:10

Thanks, I'm thinking of investing in new casual wear, so that'll be perfect.

I’d look out for a couple of new jumpers in really cosy knits for outdoors, and something to layer under them. Maybe try Toast? Wide-leg slightly cropped trousers (navy, maroon or muted checks all good) in needlecord or cord, perhaps, for walking and lounging by the fire. Slim-fit merino or cashmere jersey for indoors. You’ll need brogues or nice trainers or flats for inside, and proper hiking boots for walks - it’ll be very muddy.

Evening - glam up! It will be fun! Lovely dress or silk trousers and top?

PersonaNonGarter · 18/08/2021 11:54

Wear elasticated waistbands for breakfast…mmmmm

Chickfilay · 18/08/2021 18:15

Oh good ideas there, thanks! Especially the comfortable waistbands. Grin I definitely don't suit a cropped wide leg, but have one lovely pink cashmere jumper, I think I need more... and definitely new smart trousers, got some great walking ones recently.

Jeans and jumpers for the day with a waterproof jacket and boots suitable for mud. Think wool jumpers and blue jeans in an understated, casual way. Old Barbour jackets fit in very well.

Evening is time to glam up!

I'm living vicariously ... have you thought about a bombshell dress for evening? Like this www.bombshellhq.com/collections/dresses/products/dark-green-velvet-edge-of-the-shoulder-dress?variant=32710048251984

This was exactly the kind of thing I was thinking of for dinner. Love, love, love it. And yes, New jeans and jumpers, perfect.

Treat yourself to a really lovely jumper - perhaps buy while you are in Scotland? Cahsmere from Brora? There will be lots of opportunity to buy something lovely while you are there. I would also treat myself to a lovely new bobble hat or beanie.

Cazziebo · 20/08/2021 08:38

I've just had a few days in Gleneagles - possibly the most amazing hotel I've stayed in and I've had some great hotels in my time! Hoping to go back in January.

As PPs say, anything goes. It is so superbly relaxed. Dinner in the Strathearn was a range of full on glitz to golf casual.

Enjoy!

Chickfilay · 20/08/2021 21:43

You guys are awesome. Really got me looking forward to it now! Right. Really nice jumpers, well fitted jeans and just enjoy. And something very lovely for the dinner. Brilliant.

Jealous of your stay - it’s fabulous! Echo what the others have said. Casual is fine but you’ll want to dress for dinner. Uniqlo light merino wool jumpers are very reasonable (about £25!) but lovely and soft and warm. I buy several new colours every year at this time and they are a staple for me.

But more importantly, book a treatment at the spa. You must. It’s fabulous and you’ll be very, very glad you did. Have a wonderful time!

Felldownabackdonhole · 20/08/2021 22:30

My sister has just been for her honeymoon. She had to dress up for dinner (her DH wore is kilt). It makes it feel very special.

I think that what you have described is perfect. Have a lovely time.

Oh they are lovely looking, I like a fine jumper, so they look perfect. And not expensive so don't need to worry about them! I'm going to phone them this week and get things sorted, I'm hoping to plan a few activities for us, but at this rate I'm thinking, activities for him, spa for me. Wink

What a lovely honeymoon! I doubt I'll manage to persuade him to wear his kilt. Though I love it on him. I'll just have to sneak buy him some stuff. Not sure what though. Maybe just dress trousers and a nice shirt. Good shoes, walking boots and a casual shoe.

If you've got the funds, they gave some lovely expensive shops in their wee arcade (including a Brora iirc) so you could treat yourself while you're there.

Well maybe I just might treat myself. Its very stressful organising someone else's birthday... I should be rewarded. Grin
