Which is more classic for a simple engagement ring?

Platinum is actually more affordable than white gold at the moment! It's around £20/g cheaper![/quote]
It doesn't need regularly re-plating with rhodium either.

I wear my mums engagement ring occasionally - the diamond looks fairly yellowish in comparison to the D colour diamond in my platinum engagement ring, but I’m not sure if that’s the gold making hers look yellow or if it’s genuinely poorer quality so wouldn’t have been set in platinum. My advice would be to find out what colour diamond you have.

Also, if you end up going for white gold, these are not all the same quality. Depending on the mix, some are whiter and don't need replating, whereas others are much more yellow and need rhodium plating. High street jewellers tend not to mention this when you are looking at all the shiny white gold in the shop.
I've got 2 white gold rings and side by side you can definitely see the difference in colour of the metal

Platinum. It enhances the whiteness of a diamond.

I happen to have two diamond solitaires here which have matching diamonds as they came from the same original multi stoned ring. I agree that the one set in yellow gold looks more yellow than the one set in white gold.

I don’t think a tiny ring can ‘suit’ someone particularly. It’s too small to notice really. However, both my engagement and wedding ring are platinum and diamond and I think they are beautiful. Go to an independent jeweller rather than a chain for the best price.

Gold

Thank you everyone!

@SilverGlassHare it is a G colour diamond so middle of the road perhaps in terms of colour!
