What shoes are people wearing for work now?

I am a 40 something size 16 woman and as I have been wfh for ages I usually wear trainers or ankle boots in winter.
However, I have a work meeting in London in a few weeks and I wondered what everyone was wearing on their feet. I am not sure what I will be wearing yet but I quite often do the midi dress trainers combo (sorry) or black trousers with trainers. I am not sure trainers are smart enough and it’s too warm for boots so I was wondering what to wear/buy
I hopefully won’t be walking far but I have fat feet (to match the rest of me) and arthritis in my toes so even comfy shoes will probably hurt after a while
Any ideas on how I can be stylish and comfy (ish) please?

Wear your trainers.

JohnnyEnglish · 05/08/2021 20:01

I can’t comment from personal experience as don’t have similar feet to yours but I have noticed clarks have some nice shoes in a range of widths. I wear trainers on commute and heels in office.

EastWestWhosBest · 05/08/2021 20:02

Following as I am having a shoe crisis right now.

Blankiefan · 05/08/2021 20:04

Are you me? I have my first real live meeting next week and have decided to embrace trousers and trainers in a smart casual kind of way. I cant face "work shoes". I'm also starting a new job and think I may as well start as I'd really like to go on.

I did buy some new trainers to make sure / make me feel a bit smarter. I got some nice grey addidas ones. Will wear with smart black linen trousers and a khaki linen t-shirt (half tucked into my belt).

HundredMilesAnHour · 05/08/2021 20:05

I wear these:

niutrack.com/product/miista-coraline-red-croc-leather-flats/

I have them in black, red, navy and beige!

Hoppinggreen · 05/08/2021 20:06

@WhoppingBigBackside

Wear your trainers.

I wear plain black work shoes, mine have to be closed toe... I know they are know as the "granny shoes" provider... Hotter... but I'm on my feet all day and they are comfortable

Those are lovely but with a high arch and chubby feet I think they would hurt too much

That sounds nice but not sure it would suit me. The meeting is at an Embassy if it helps

Flatform sandals, loafers, brogues.

mynameiscalypso · 05/08/2021 20:09

I bought some flat slingbacks from ASOS for this very purpose. Obviously I have not worn them since said meeting.

Hoppinggreen · 05/08/2021 20:09

Don’t think Sandals are smart enough but I could wear my brogues (see above)

GingerFigs · 05/08/2021 20:14

I am also having a shoe crisis as have been living in trainers, wellies or slippers the past 18 months!!

@HundredMilesAnHour I love those red croc flats but I hate having bare feet in shoes! I always want to wear socks as feel 'clammy' without them Shock

ActonSquirrel · 05/08/2021 20:17

Can I hijack slightly...also looking for work sandals / shoes.

Where does one get something like this? Yes I did take that picture on the tube Blush

Yes, wear brogues. Russell & Bromley do beautiful Oxford brogues. Or tassel loafers?

Hoppinggreen · 05/08/2021 20:24

Thank you everyone, looks like I’m not alone.
If I wear my brogues can I wear pop socks? I prefer my trousers ankle length so I think they would show so I would have to risk sweaty feet.
Can I wear brogues with long skirts/dresses?- my legs are NOT my best feature

Topshop used to have ones similar to this last couple of years. Have you looked at there online?
Botanica · 05/08/2021 20:25

@ActonSquirrel I mainly wear shoes like that and tend to get them from Next. Reasonable prices which means I can get the same style in several colours.

ActonSquirrel · 05/08/2021 20:26

No ill have a look. Not sure they'll even be comfy but looking for a smartish sandal for work.

Bessica · 05/08/2021 20:26

Clark’s Hamble Oak brogues are very comfy and smart.

Ivy48 · 05/08/2021 20:28

@ActonSquirrel these are making a comeback I think! Have notice a few pairs on the new in section of river island and ASOS. Would also check next, M&S and the supermarkets tbh as I’ve often found these

Those shoes just look so tragically too small that I'm reflexively wincing.

I think both Cos and John Lewis have shoes in that style at the moment though.

itcouldhave · 05/08/2021 20:43

I’ve been wondering the same thing. I’m also fat but I have wide feet, the top bit of my foot is very high and my ankles are massive, so I struggle buying shoes. I tried loafers but I’m a size 7 and it basically looked like I was wearing massive men’s shoes.

In my old job I wore sandals in the summer and trainers or boots in winter but my new job has a smarter office culture. Luckily, I’m only in one day a week so I’ve been wearing fashion trainers (Skechers etc as opposed to actual gym trainers) with wide leg trousers.

They are not trendy, but they're smart enough and they certainly look comfortable.
