What Can I Do With My Wedding Rings?

Perriwinkles · 29/07/2021 16:06

I am separated. I loved my engagement and wedding ring. They have been in a box for a couple of years. I don't want to wear them on my right hand as they scream 'engagement and wedding rings' but I wish I could do something with them. I just don't know where to start.

Does anyone have any ideas?

I've come a long way and am in a place where I'm honouring what was (flawed as it was!); so I don't want to destroy them or get rid of them (I think!).

I'm open to any and all ideas.

Thanks in advance.

I took my engagement, wedding and pushing ring to a chap in Devon along with a spare diamond earring I had - just waiting to get it back. All individually designed and not overly expensive.

Soontobe60 · 29/07/2021 18:43

I gave my wedding ring from my first husband to our dd when she got married! I told her I didn’t expect her to wear it, but that she might like to keep it.

This style of ring remodelling?

66babe · 29/07/2021 19:16

Really beautiful @Yellow85
Love that ring

jerrywesterby · 29/07/2021 21:32

@Perriwinkles I have exactly the same predicament as you although I've had my rings for 7 years. I've tentatively asked a couple of jewellers what they could do but none seemed keen as they're platinum not gold and apparently a lot more difficult to remodel ... plus you're talking a few hundred quid. Plus the diamond has fallen out of my engagement ring so can't even sell it without getting it fixed.... so they're still in my jewellery box 😬

Squiz81 · 29/07/2021 22:06

I follow a jeweller on Instagram called Justin Duance they make beautiful rings from existing jewellery. I’ve seen other jewellers providing a similar service - have a look on etsy

Perriwinkles · 29/07/2021 23:57

Thanks so much for the responses and links. I’ll check out Justin Duance. I love those remodelled rings! Great about the guy in Devon. Thanks for the jeweller’s perspective - it sounds like selling on is definitely not a good idea and I’d rather not anyhow. I just need to actually do something about it now & find the right jeweller.

The Devon chap is Jason Jones Jewellery. Have a look on Instagram. Very reasonably priced.

Isabelle70 · 30/07/2021 09:03

I had my old engagement ring, about 28 years old made into a Tiffany styled diamonds by the yard necklace.
I would look for photos of ideas that you like so you have something to show the jeweller.

SoddingWeddings · 30/07/2021 09:09

I actual came on to recommend Jason Jones as well, I love his style, followed him on Instagram for a while. I have a HUGE and heavy silver necklace and bracelet set that I've never liked (18th birthday gift) that I want reworked. His prices are very reasonable as you're supplying most of the materials.

SoddingWeddings · 30/07/2021 09:10

instagram.com/jasonjonesjewellery?utm_medium=copy_link here he is

Disfordarkchocolate · 30/07/2021 09:12

I left mine behind, I wish I'd kept them to make into a necklace that I could have given to my daughter.

yoursfroobly · 30/07/2021 09:21

This thread has just inspired me to dig out my great grandmothers rose gold bracelet. Would love to have it fashioned into two pieces for me and my sister... Smile

BikeRunSki · 30/07/2021 09:32

A friend of mine had her engagement and wedding rings melted down and remodelled into a pendant. Befit she did though, she had some professional photos taken of them, and her wearing them, to keep to show any future children she might have. She said she would always be open about her first marriage, if she had a second one/relationship and children.

Leah2005 · 30/07/2021 09:47

@SoddingWeddings I can't wait to get mine back! We were on holiday in May and popped across to his workshop. Lovely bloke. His work is so beautiful and he was so enthusiastic showing us the stones he had etc and the process he uses. Getting excited to get mine back now.

HaroldTheHare · 30/07/2021 10:37

I had a colleague who got her grandmother's wedding ring made into a pendant. The jeweller added a midlength gold chain soldered to the sides of the ring so it lay flat when worn. They also added some diamonds to it & it was very beautiful piece in the end & you would not instantly have known it was originally a ring even though the ring itself was intact.

I have some old inherited jewellery & I'm thinking of having them remodelled too

OP I think you should Google cocktail rings to see if you get any inspiration for changing the setting & adding stones to your ring

Another nice idea is to add birthstone, either your own or if you have children. Again if you Google there are some gorgeous examples of settings for these rings

Perriwinkles · 30/07/2021 11:12

Thank you all so much for these tips! I love the ideas and it’s such a good idea to take photos of the rings as I never want to forget my first marriage, fraught as it was. I’m not even with someone but I say ‘first marriage’ in hope I will some day marry someone else.

I don’t live anywhere near Devon but I’m going to check JJ out on Instagram. I’ll also google cocktail rings etc. Aw I’m so happy because every time I see the box with them in it, I get sad. Time to move on with grace.

@Perriwinkles I nearly sold my rings shortly after my divorce and mum said I might live to regret it - how right she was. 18 years post divorce, I remember the love when they were given. I have a DS and couldn't imagine him wanting to use them as they are. Having them remodelled will bring new life to them and still hold the love with which they were originally gifted. Turns out my ex DH is a decent bloke after all and a very good father so I'm happy to wear them now in a new way.

Leah2005 · 30/07/2021 11:45

JJ would have discussed over the phone etc but being as I was down there anyway I thought I'd drop in.

Perriwinkles · 30/07/2021 11:55

@Leah2005

That was good advice. It’s amazing what time and perspective can offer. Flowers

That’s great. I’ll see if I can get a consultation with JJ.

‘Move on with grace’ is such a lovely way of putting it.

Perriwinkles · 30/07/2021 17:22

@Slothkin

Thank you. It’s funny how possessions can have such meaning. X

I love those strand rings. They're gorgeous. I have 3 old god rings I might do this with. Sadly I've not got a selection of diamonds hanging around !
