Anti dandruff shampoo/treatment recommendations

DD (15) has had problems with dandruff on and off for years. She has long hair, won't consider having it cut and gets bad dandruff. It needs regular washing because its really greasy too.

We've tried lots of brands over the years but nothing really seems to work.

Can anyone recommend anything good that will really help, please?

It’s not medicated or anything but I’ve had good results from the umberto gianini scalp restore range, it’s got fruit enzymes that work like a chemical exfoliation, I don’t suffer badly and only need to use this once a week or whatever. Not sure if it’s strong enough for a bigger problem but it’s not expensive so might be worth a try….smells lush too

Nizoral shampoo for bad outbreaks, then E45 dry scalp shampoo for maintenance. Agree re the Umberto Giannini range - the coconut oil conditioner is great. The Philip Kingsley range of shampoos and treatments for dandruff/dry scalp is excellent, although expensive.
This is helpful.

Selsun for outbreaks then once it's under control Ginger shampoo from the body shop/original vosene/classic head and shoulders.

I have tried so many different ones, and the very best is the Ginger shampoo from The Body Shop. Sorted my scalp out straight away - it's the only one I use now 😊

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. We've tried Head & Shoulders in the past, and Vosene too. We're using the Umberto Giannini range at the moment. I love it & think it's really good but it's not getting rid of her dandruff. Think I may get some of the Nizoral and give that to her to use too.

What worked for me was to stop trying anti-dandruff stuff. Hairdresser recommended Kerastase Dermo Calm and I haven't used anything else since

Nizoral made mine much worse (and cost a fortune)

PlayItCool · 26/07/2021 13:34

I had good results with the Ameliorate range when I'd tried so many other things (inc Philip Kingsley which made my scalp worse).

Tanaqui · 26/07/2021 13:42

Have you been to the gp to check if it is dandruff and not psoriasis or a fungal infection? Might be worth it?

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 26/07/2021 14:53

That Umberto absolutely ruined my scalp, I'd ditch that asap.

TheWindOnTheMoon · 26/07/2021 15:52

@Tanaqui I hadn't thought of
that. She had bad eczema as a baby & toddler which she needed prescription creams for but which cleared up years ago. Will look into that.

T Gel sensitive. I lather and rinse it twice with one of those plastic scalp massager brushes. I believe it is the salicylic acid which makes it work.

Another vote for Body Shop Ginger Shampoo, I tried lots of medicated shampoos, but they didn’t work, I use it all the time now too.
