no frills bikini for uncomfortable pre teen

My 12 year old feels extremely uncomfortable in her skin at the moment and would usually wear a 'legsuit' speedo for going to the pool.
I'm looking for something that is a bit more suitable for the beach. She has no problem with her bottom part, it is the top part that cannot look too much like a bikini and also cannot have any type of frills/flowers etc. It would also be nice if the top part is lined so not to figure hugging if you see what I mean. I'd love to help her but have not found anything that she approves of yet. Have you seen something that matches my (hopeless) description?

Do a search for sports bikini.

SoupDragon · 26/07/2021 10:59

I agree. DD was like this a couple of years ago and we got hers from a sports shop.

Why a bikini? What's wrong with a one piece cosi?

Gladioli23 · 26/07/2021 11:05

I didn't wear or indeed own anything that wasn't a sports swimming costume until I was about 18. Is there a reason she can't wear her legsuit Speedo to the beach?!

merrymouse · 26/07/2021 11:05

Why does she have to wear a bikini? Personally I think they are more practical for going to the loo, but some people are still wearing wetsuits in the water in the U.K.

Rash vests and surf shorts are also practical if you are just hanging out at the beach.

Absolutely this. I have very rarely worn a bikini, even when I was a size 10, a one piece is fine.
Gladioli23 · 26/07/2021 11:06

PS I have still only worn a bikini on one holiday in my life, and am very happy in my one piece.a

CoffeeBeansGalore · 26/07/2021 11:08

Tankini. Try Regatta & Landsend.

NeverRTFT · 26/07/2021 11:08

Sports tankini

DD wears this one. 12yo can usually wear adult size 6 or 8

Boden have some nice simple bikini tops, tankinis and rash vests in plain or bright colours, and you can mix and match the tops and bottoms. Quite expensive though!

Water T-shirt over the bikini top? A bit looser fitting than a rash vest. My DCs have Decathlon ones although it seems they are currently very low on stock for kids' and women's sizes.

Kjr33 · 26/07/2021 11:36

Look at swimming specific suppliers like swim path or pro swimwear etc for funkita or tyr or arena ones they are constructed for actual swimming but come in really nice patterns and designs. Look at sections for training suits not racing suits (the racing suits are incredibly tight and stiff) and hopefully you should find something she likes.

Reservoir13 · 26/07/2021 13:07

Many thanks for all suggestions! Last year she herself commented on the beach that her legsuit wasn't that comfortable as she was playing in the sand non-stop and sand would get logged in the suit constantly. I'll show her some of the options tonight!

Decathlon! Great for sportier style bikinis.

What about a swim dress?

Miseryisabutterfly · 26/07/2021 13:31

My dd has this, it’s modest. And cheap!

Why a bikini if she's uncomfortable?
Have you considered a tankini?

CMOTDibbler · 26/07/2021 13:53

Lands End have a great range of swim shorts, rash vests, tankini tops etc that co-ordinate, and Mountain Warehouse similarly
