Alternative to JoJo Maman Bebe for 5 yo

Hi there,

I like a few things about JMB, including that they use good-quality jersey fabric, their stuff washes and wears well (often outlasts other brands), and they make useful things like skorts (combination of skirt and shorts).

DD is now 5 so on the very top edge of their size-range (and they rarely have much in a size 5-6years).

We don't go for the applique-duck-vibe these days (DD would be having none of that), but a nice breton stripe with a pretty collar, or a little ditsy print on a good quality t-shirt or shorts... she'd still go for that.

I've tried the obvious alternatives (John Lewis, M&S, Boden, Joules) and also tried Ebay for second hand JMB stuff in age 5-6 - but no luck.

Am I missing a trick for: pretty, but still practical, good quality summer clothes for a 5yo girl?

Fat face kids clothes are nice, or how about Frugi and the scandi brands?

jasminoide · 25/07/2021 00:17

Asda.

BillyRaywasapreachersson · 25/07/2021 00:25

Is Verbaudet still going/any good? Used to buy a lot of dd's stuff from there when she was 3-8 ish.

BungleandGeorge · 25/07/2021 00:51

Frugi

Marmite27 · 25/07/2021 00:53

We buy lots from H&M.

CrouchEndTiger12 · 25/07/2021 00:57

Polarn O. Pyret

luckymagnoliatree · 25/07/2021 01:22

Little Green Radicals, Kite Clothing, Toby Tiger, Piccalilly might all be worth checking out.

Crew

Lands End is one of the few places that does skorts (Boden is the other). Polarn O Pyret wears incredibly well, have you looked there?

Buckleyourseatbelt · 25/07/2021 07:16

I was a big fan of the items you just described- in fact my 6 year old was wearing her striped skort yesterday. My older child wears stuff from:
Boden
Frugi
Little Green Radicals
Kite
Toby Tiger
Little Bird (try ebay)

Buckleyourseatbelt · 25/07/2021 07:16

Oh, and Cath Kidston children’s clothes. Again, try ebay.

EssentialHummus · 25/07/2021 07:20

I was about to list the same brands as buckle.

BikeRunSki · 25/07/2021 07:25

@Marmite27

We buy lots from H&M.
I do too (dc are 9 and 12) but the quality is not comparable at all. Now my dc are big enough that their clothes can last a year or more, I’d really like something JJMMBB quality.

I was taking to a friend last week about how there would be a market for JJMMBB type clothes -good quality, simple striped Ts, twill shorts/trousers etc (not appliqué ducks!) for larger children.

PippinStar · 25/07/2021 07:35

Crew clothing?

Blondiecub0109 · 25/07/2021 07:38

Kite clothing? They go up to age 13. The sizing on their infant stuff could be a little weird (huge in the shoulders) but very happy with the toddler size up stuff we’ve had.

Fred and Noah leggings

CrouchEndTiger12 · 25/07/2021 12:30

GAP do some lovely clothes too. All of their stores are closing but they remain online and much stuff is permanently on offer.

MyNameForToday1980 · 25/07/2021 23:45

Thanks folks!

There are some brands on here I've never heard of (Fred and Nora, Kite Clothing, Little Green Radicals, Toby Tiger) so I'll take a good look at those.

DD lived in Polarn O Pyret leggings as a wee one (those leggings which come with turn-ups, and so grow with the child for months and months) - and we've had the odd bit from there in more recent times, though I'm now tempted by a winter jacket for her.

Agreed with PP that we get a lot of stuff from H&M, but it doesn't wash as well as JJMB and H&M seem to stock a lot of stuff which creases easily (vs. stretchy jersey material).

Thanks again!

We go for the little white company but it only goes up to age 6.

21Bee · 26/07/2021 00:02

Also can be expensive, but Trotters. Lots of Liberty print dresses with Peter Pan collars and good quality knit wear

Paddling654 · 26/07/2021 00:08

Kite
Lighthouse
petit bateau

Miseryisabutterfly · 26/07/2021 00:12

Maybe the kids range at Arket?

mrssmiling · 26/07/2021 07:32

Definitely look at Petit Bateau and the sale is on. Mountain Warehouse sometimes have nice things. Armor-Lux and St James have good quality children’s Breton tops - the Nautical Company is certainly worth a look. Rachel Riley is expensive but lovely, and there are some sale bargains.
