Teen DD very spotty back and decolletage

She's 14. I feel she's lucky she barely has any spots on her face (at least for now) but her back and upper chest are so spotty, she will cover her whole body even when it's really warm, won't wear anything slightly low cut, certainly no strappy tops, and won't go to the swimming pool with her friends.
Is there anything I can get her that will help clear her skin? She's got sensitive very white skin that scars easily and for some reason mosquitoes love her and she ends up with red marks all over her legs as well.

My DS was like this growing up… I do remember my mum took her to the docs and she was prescribed some type of cream that did the trick.
Gp could be your next port of call?

Sunshinedaisymeadowsxx · 24/07/2021 07:24

(Darling sis is DS)

Go to the GP - I was the same (though my face was also bad) and what worked for me eventually was the pill (hormone regulation), but there were a few sets of pills and creams available to try first.

Lolalovesroses · 24/07/2021 07:32

I went through this too. The only thing that worked for me was Dianette Contraceptive pill. There are lots of reports of nasty side effects with it, but for me was a total miracle worker.

ANewBrandOfShetlandPony · 24/07/2021 07:44

I think we might have to resort to that. I do worry about the pill though, and potentially gaining weight as unfortunately she has also inherited this tendency from me.

Try Thyme Out from Victoria Health. I’m not woo at all (and had dreadful skin as a teenager so I get it) but this stuff is incredible. I saw it recommended by trinny and my dd has used it. Zaps spots without drying, really is brilliant.

happytoday73 · 24/07/2021 07:52

I had this.. Also ended up on dinette...

Before that I had low level antibiotics... And a roll on... Not easy for back

EMOJIgate · 24/07/2021 07:52

When I was younger the pill helped with acne but had other negative effects on my body and mood so I had to stop taking it.

I have not tried this specific product but do rate Murad skincare highly. It's a bit expensive but overall had good reviews. Perhaps some other posters know of more affordable alternatives?

Fluffycloudland77 · 24/07/2021 07:55

I’d just go to the dr before she scars. It’s just a bacterial infection.

JudgeRindersMinder · 24/07/2021 07:56

There’s a topical antibiotic lotion called Zineryt (GP prescription obviously) which both I and my kids found helpful

FlippingKipper · 24/07/2021 07:58

She sounds exactly like me as a teen. I used to find that sun really helped, so would sit in a vest top by the window, or in the garden (I too would cover up completely in public).

The thing that totally cleared it up for me though was some magic pill that I cannot remember the name of... it wasn't a contraceptive pill, and didn't cause any weight gain, but i can't remember what it was. Possibly began with K.... i do remember the doctor stressing that I MUST NOT take it if there was a chance I was pregnant (I wasn't sexually active, so knew I was safe on that score).

Anyway, it cleared it up really quickly, and its never come back in 20 years.

I hope you find something - I remember being so miserable about it as a teen, when everyone else was wearing strappy dresses and I was in round neck t shirts.

FlippingKipper · 24/07/2021 08:01

Maybe it was lymecycline, though that doesn't begin with k...

Roaccutane? I had that as a teen, although I had spots on my face too. It totally changed my skin, and I perhaps have had a total of half a dozen spots in my lifetime since. I’d say it’s worth getting on ASAP firstly to avoid scars, and also because you need to be cautious about the sun and absolutely not taking any chances of getting pregnant. I had it at 13/14 and so my mum was still rigorously enforcing suncream, and I wasn’t sexually active at all. I think had I had it later at 16/17 it might have been less safe as I was in control of my own life more, desperate to tan and fit in, and had discovered boys!
FlippingKipper · 24/07/2021 10:44

I don't remember it being roaccutane, but it could well have been!

Bryonyshcmyony · 24/07/2021 10:47

That's the definition of acne. The pill cleared my dds (bad) acne. Accutane worked for 12 months then it returned. She's on yasmin and has the most beautiful skin now (also has a boyfriend so it's a double whammy!) she's 21 now

Bbub · 24/07/2021 13:07

If this was me I'd try an LED mask on the blue light before going with medication. It's supposed to be good for acne on the blue setting to kill the bacteria or something. You can get ones specifically for the chest area and the face one can be laid across the chest /back anyway.

I love my led mask but I've not used it for acne, but as I say that's what I'd try first because I've had good results on the other light settings for other skin issues.

Starsolight · 24/07/2021 13:12

Before trying anything prescription wise I’d recommend a loofah and a tea tree body wash.
Worked for me as a teenager.
Can get loofah on a stick too for back.
Shower twice a day and sometimes a light non oily moisturiser after.
I had no other problems after doing this.

Inmypjsagain · 24/07/2021 13:19

Are the spots small? Or like proper acne?

I was spotty as a teen on my back and it’s horrible, never wanted to wear anything low. Before trying medication/pill, maybe a salicylic body wash? I used a cera ve one for my face and body, they do a moisturiser too. www.lookfantastic.com/cerave-smoothing-cleanser-236ml/12207663.html?affil=thggpsad&switchcurrency=GBP&shippingcountry=GB&thg_ppc_campaign=71700000026979856&adtype=pla&product_id=12207663&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI_qSPm9j78QIVJO_tCh3ccgwVEAQYASABEgK-2_D_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Inmypjsagain · 24/07/2021 13:20

Also- stating the obvious but wearing cotton clothing so it’s breathable, fresh pj tops etc all make a difference too!

Northernlassie1974 · 24/07/2021 13:28

I still get spots on my back as a 40 year old woman! Im lucky I've never got them on my face but events like our wedding, holidays, summer...its just so confidence denting!
Anyway, mine is managed by the following:

  • on the pill for 10 years...no spots
  • being pregnant...no spots (not recommending this as a cure!!!!!!!)
  • sunlight....getting sun on my back clears them up for a while and makes the scars look better.
  • most effective long term method...Duac cream prescribed by my doctor. Been using it for years now and it keeps them at bay. You have to persevere as it doesn't treat current outbreaks, you have to wait for those to go but once a day, I do it after my shower (but be careful as bleaches clothes so it's recommended at night time...my bed time vest tops are all faded at the back but I just buy cheap ones). After a month or two they go. Keep up once a day and they're kept at bay. I often do it once every few days now they're all gone and it keeps them at bay.

Scrubbing and harsh washing only makes it worse in my experience.. I tried all the washes and scrubs and over the counter creams....they tend to dry out your skin and make the spots worse!

Hugs to your daughter, but, if don't want to go as far as pill at this point, defo worth a try, get her to docs x

Plesae don't waste your money on things like this.
Bryonyshcmyony · 24/07/2021 13:38

and please not a loofah

You can buy acnecide without prescription in boots now (benzyol peroxide gel). It is very effective, you could try that for a month and see if it helps. It's with the spot face washes

I second this too. My child is going through the same thing, as long as they are lightly exfoliating the area on a daily basis within a week there is a huge difference. 3 weeks on it has cleared. However once is cleared said child bloody stops 😒 and then the cycle starts again.
LizzieMacQueen · 24/07/2021 16:00

Someone upthread mentioned murad; they have a promotion on at the moment. 20% off. I haven't tried the acne products but I really rate their overnight retinol cream. Maybe if you contact them they'd send a sample?

LizzieMacQueen · 24/07/2021 16:03

Think it's this product.
