Skinny jeans

There may be lots of threads about this already but I couldn’t find any… can anyone explain what is so awful about skinny jeans? They are all I have in my wardrobe plus one pair of old bootcut. I know they’re well out of fashion now and I get disdainful comments from my teen DD’s. They’re so comfy and easy and can look really smart with heels and I’m really hoping they come full circle back in to fashion one day!

There's nothing awful about them. I think they looks fabulous. We are going through a phase where 'They' say skinnies are out & folks are pretending to like the 'mom jean'. Soon as winter hits the reality will set in that they make you look like an 80's kids TV presenter & The skinny jean will rein again.

Classica · 23/07/2021 17:55

There's nothing wrong with them as such, they've just been the dominant jean shape for 15 years or more and a lot of people are bored of them. Middle aged/older people are often more resistant to change so will rail against it, (it was the same when bootcuts went out of fashion) and that's obviously fine, you should always wear what you love wearing!

Personally I love all the new types of jeans and trousers. I am very much over skinny jeans and wish them a happy retirement. (until they come back out of retirement in another 15 years)

VanGuff · 23/07/2021 17:56

There's nothing wrong with skinnies! Plenty of people still wear them, if they suit you and you find them comfortable go for it

Honestly the mom jean/dad jean/wide leg jean looks great on a slim 16 year old with a crop top, looks a bit silly on anyone older. Teenagers and adults should be wearing different jeans anyway. I've tried all forms of non skinny but they just do not suit me so I've given up and gone back to skinnies

Classica · 23/07/2021 17:57

And I do think, and have always thought, that skinny jeans only look good on approx. 15% of people who wear them. The idea that they're flattering to most people is a delusion.

I’m 57, I don’t wear them anymoreConfused

I lecture history of fashion and trends. They are in decline and will disappear eventually. They have been a mega trend (20 years or so) but they will go.

They are too extreme to be a classic.

Classica · 23/07/2021 18:18

Well I'm middle aged too so I wasn't being disparaging I just mean that your average 21 year old will hop on the latest cool trend. Because they want to be cool. Whereas the 21 year old's mum is more likely to resist a trend until they've given it full consideration.

MissJeanBrodiesprime · 23/07/2021 18:25

I think I may just have to dare to be different, I love my skinny jeans too much! Plus they’re cosy and warm in the winter.

I can’t see that the skinny shape will completely disappear. They are basically just leggings made from denim and are so practical. Great with boots - no breezy gaps around the ankle and much better in the rain than bootcuts/wide-legs.

I get that wider leg jeans are more in fashion now and I have a few pairs for spring/summer but I honestly think wearing flares soaked up the knees on a rainy day in winter is just a bit weird. You’d have to be very desperate to be fashionable to put up with that surely?

Wide leg jeans that are cut off above the ankle work well in winter with boots and don’t drag through puddles but any jeans/trousers that end anywhere near the ground are just asking for trouble!

Outdoor clothing brands get this completely - I was just contemplating buying these for example:
acaioutdoorwear.com/collections/outdoor-legwear/products/max-stretch-skinny-outdoor-trousers-deep-navy

Floisme · 23/07/2021 18:32

Pah! older women have been around the jeans merry-go-round a few times. We're not scared - we've worn them all.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 23/07/2021 19:08

But leggings will also disappear.

Fashion emphasis has been on the legs for years. It’s moved to the waist now,

IrishGirl2020 · 23/07/2021 19:17

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow
But what we will wear in the gym if leggings are out?
I can’t imagine wearing flappy trousers on a reformer Pilates machine for example. And you don’t necessarily want to wear shorts in the winter. Also if you’re lazy like me you end up wearing the gym gear for the rest of the day too 😂

coogee · 23/07/2021 19:27

I was late to the skinny jeans thing because I was convinced that they wouldn't look good on me. As it happens, they do.

Mum jeans on the other hand...

Ooh yes I’ve been looking at these up as well.

I still wear them but do think they look a bit passé now. They are more practical than many Jean shapes though, particularly in wet weather. I loved my bootcuts, but not the "rising damp" on wet days.

SenecaFallsRedux · 23/07/2021 20:14

True. And I still have quite a few of them from various eras. But I won't have to decide whether I need to get some new ones until sometime in the autumn. Much too hot right now for jeans where I live.
ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 23/07/2021 20:44

Irishgirl, they will just return to gymwear. You won’t be able to buy them as fashion items anymore.

Leggings started to fade out towards the early 90’s. There was quite a long period of time before they returned.

RaspberryThief · 23/07/2021 22:00

Has emphasis really moved to the waist when the shops are still full of really loose baggy dresses with no defined waist at all? Or do you mean for jeans specifically, with the high waisted styles, @ArseInTheCoOpWindow? Interested!

Thewinterofdiscontent · 23/07/2021 22:53

Honestly once you get over the keeping up with trends and find your own look the better you look.

I remember when bootcut went to skinny’s and fat thighed girls everwhere looked at them disbelief. Parsnip legs vs staying on trend.

Now it’s a fat gunt that looks bad in high rise jeans.

I’ve worn a low rise boyfriend jean forever as an androgynous apple shape. Makes my short legs longer snd my fat tummy in proportion. No one seems to have noticed I wasn’t in skinnies or 7/8 jeans or whatever.

Floisme · 24/07/2021 00:35

The pisser for me wasn't so much skinny jeans themselves but how few things worked with them. I found myself limited to big slouchy jumpers, stripy Ts, biker jacket and erm.. that was about it. All perfectly good looks but dear Lord I was bored senseless by the end and it's such a pleasure to wear a fitted top again or a tucked in shirt.

fraddu · 24/07/2021 00:40

I think they are quite classic mainly because they are good at showing off footwear so can't see them ever disappearing.

fraddu · 24/07/2021 00:41

and yes rain!

fraddu · 24/07/2021 00:42

But leggings will also disappear.

But gym leggings?

fraddu · 24/07/2021 00:43

People like comfort & relaxed dressing a lot these days.

Floisme · 24/07/2021 00:50

Lots of jeans work in the rain though: straight leg or barrel leg are fine. I don't own any mom jeans but I imagine they are too. I don't get this idea that no other style works in bad weather.

ZednotZee · 24/07/2021 00:57

Let's be honest, Kate Moss popularised skinny jeans for a reason. They only look good on skinny/lean legs.

Mom and Dad jeans are unforgiving in the stomach area but thy are what is currently in style.

Fuck it all and just wear 501s like God intended.
