Glasses and Sunglasses

Long time contact lens wearer but I now find myself needing to wear glasses more and need to get some prescription sunglasses. I hate glasses - but I suppose if I have to wear them I might as well go for it - I want something super cool. Any suggestions for either? Am prepared to blow the budget...

I just got a great deal on two pairs of prescription sunglasses (DKNY and Fossil) from glassesdirect.co.uk. I've never bought glasses on line before but it was really easy. Ordered a trial pack (4 pairs to try out), chose a couple of pairs, sent back the frames and ordered the ones I wanted with an emailed copy of my current prescription.

Info on deals here:
www.moneysavingexpert.com/deals/glasses-direct/

...but if you order some frames to try at home, you'll get emailed offers like 40% off complete glasses etc.

I am going to buy all my glasses this way now. So convenient.

I wear Kylie ones from Specsavers. Totally fine
I hate wearing lenses in the so sunglasses are a godsend.

I love my traditional prescription raybans

Swallowridge · 21/07/2021 23:02

These guys are great iolla.com/. They are Scottish, obviously easier if you can get to a shop but they do online sales too I think.

chalkyc2 · 21/07/2021 23:24

Oh I like those @Swallowridge - shame am not in Scotland! Good prices too. Might investigate properly tomorrow.

I get mine from Cubitts. The staff are really friendly and give good advice. If you aren't in London you can order online. Prices are good.

Alocasia · 22/07/2021 07:55

I would say if you are prepared to spend, find a trendy independent opticians in your area and see what they have to show you. They will probably have more trendy brands and no doubt better made than a lot of the online stuff. What sort of styles are you after?

noblegreenk · 22/07/2021 08:03

I have prescription Ray Bans. They have polarised lenses which make a huge difference as well. They we're around 400 (I have my lenses thinned a lot) but I've had them for 5 years now. If you're spending a lot of money on them then I'd recommend getting a classic style.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 22/07/2021 08:09

I do the 2 for 1 at Specsavers. At the moment I've got some very cool Levi's sunglasses and some Joe 90-type regular specs (always have very bold, very dark frames). Both pairs ~ £120.

chalkyc2 · 22/07/2021 08:50

Thanks for replies - I kind of feel I want something a bit statement-y and obviously cool! But I don't know what is cool!

Spec savers have some fab Marc jacobs and other designer sunglasses.
Depending on your prescription you might struggle to buy online, I know I did due to
The thickness of the lense

Alocasia · 22/07/2021 11:54

Do you like colours? Metal frames or plastic ones? I know a lot about glasses so could maybe recommend some brands if I know what sort of thing you might like

ZaraW · 22/07/2021 12:01

Oliver Peoples would be my first choice. Their quality is excellent and designs are beautiful.

Anjo2011 · 22/07/2021 12:33

Another prescription rayban wearer here. I paid extra for polarised lenses, they were costly at £375 but cost per wear will be tiny.

chalkyc2 · 22/07/2021 15:34

@Alocasia - I think plastic frame. Possibly chunky but not too much as face q small. I have a pair of ray and wayfarer sunglasses (non prescription) and whilst nice and suit me they're just a bit safe and dull. My only pair of glasses are randomly Tiffany. Would like classy and creative style (work in design) so not too clown style!

Have a look at Anne et Valentin, Face a Face, Ernie Barcelona and Woow
Some fabulous styles and definitely more exciting than RayBan or any of the other big brands. I really rate brands that are specifically glasses brands, the quality is almost always better

Alocasia · 22/07/2021 17:39

That should say ‘ETNIA Barcelona’🤣

CaptainWentworth · 22/07/2021 17:42

Would agree to have a look at an independent optician as they tend to have ‘trendier’ brands. I had some gorgeous prescription Tom Ford sunglasses, which I then left in the baby changing area at Newcastle Airport when dropping my parents off, after only having them a couple of months 😭. Saving up to replace them like for like!

Mine were a unisex style with black frames - they looked quite a lot like classic raybans on the shelf, but we’re much more comfy and flattering.

Bananaman123 · 22/07/2021 17:58

I've bought several pairs from firmoo, I've got light tint for computer working and dark tint, cheap too

chalkyc2 · 24/07/2021 15:34

Thanks all. Am now obsessed with all the cool apps 'trying on' glasses!
