I’m having a massive throw out and I’ve dug up this jacket which I used to love. Would you wear it? It from the 80s, poss early 90s. Finnish brand Pola. I’ve no idea what is fashionable these days!

I’m definitely in the camp of wear whatever the hell you want and who cares what others think but my initial thought was “oh honey, no!”

Sorry I think it’s awful and very dated.

BuffySummersReportingforSanity · 20/07/2021 14:12

It's, uh, not my taste, but I do reckon you'll find a buyer for it as "vintage".

BuffySummersReportingforSanity · 20/07/2021 14:23

P.S. I think unless you love a garment and/or are clear in your mind how you'll wear it, you probably won't.

IsobelEd · 20/07/2021 14:31

I really like its vintagey look and my girls would pounce if they saw it in a charity shop.
Def. keep it - for one thing it would be impossible to replace if you did give it away.

MoltonSilver · 20/07/2021 14:33

If you even have to ask the question let it go. Only keep things you definitely want.

Badhabits1 · 20/07/2021 14:39

It looks like it needs a good wash. Charity.

IrishMumInLondon2020 · 20/07/2021 14:41

Bin, definitely.

StarCandle · 20/07/2021 14:47

I've got a lot of clothes which are "quirky stylish" rather than "trendy stylish", so I'm no stranger to vintage or unusual pieces, but even I personally can't see any particular merit in that jacket, except as a throw over a floaty dress and even then I'm not sure on the nipped-in shape with the shoulder pads and floral pattern.

A current shaped denim jacket would look better if you wanted a denim jacket over a dress.

It won't easily turn into a bag as a PP has suggested as it is so panelled. this is hard to work with as a fabric, especially something as tough as denim, and then you'd end up with a home-made bag version of the jacket. It still won't be nice or useful and you will likely throw it away.

I would sell it as an original vintage piece, then someone will get some life out of it as a jacket still. Even if it doesn't fetch much, someone who buys it will be looking to wear it.

@StaggeringOn

The fabric is fun (and good quality) which is why I’ve kept it all these years, but yes, shape full-on lady D with padded shoulders.
Oh I didn't realize it had padded shoulders, I thought it was just hanging oddly, I can't stand those so I'd charity shop it.
StaggeringOn · 20/07/2021 17:24

It’s off to the vintage shop, I promise!

I like it

Ghostlyglow · 20/07/2021 20:03

Just try wearing it, properly I mean, as in pick out an outfit and get ready to go out and do whatever you're doing that day. You'll decide pretty quickly if you want to keep it or not then

Sssloou · 20/07/2021 20:04

Donate.

Looks like something in a Per Una sale.

StaggeringOn · 20/07/2021 20:59

Per Una!!! This was seriously expensive. And I looked really cool in it about 25 years ago! Maybe l’ll dig out some more stuff from the trunk. We all went to university in the 70s with trunks (not parents) . They (trunks not parents) were delivered from the station to your hall.

Sell that on depop as vintage and make a killing 💰💰💰

Thewinterofdiscontent · 20/07/2021 21:56

I love it. It needs new eyes though. Some cool young thing will love it.

Magicstars · 20/07/2021 22:32

I love it!

I’d forgotten that! The excitement of the trunk finally arriving a month into the term and the Porter delivering it to your room (and I didn’t go to a posh, old university)
RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/07/2021 14:36

Definitely get rid. I'm all for 'quirky' but I can't imagine any scenario in which that might look okay.

I’m sorry but it really doesn’t look it. Maybe because it’s old and tired. If you like it wear it, who cares what anyone else thinks.

I did want to say this myself. A cool young thing with, I don't know, original RayBans, a stripy t shirt, paperbag-waisted trousers with the ankles rolled up and some yellow converse or something....

(I am not a cool young thing myself any more Smile)
