What do you use to glue down curly hair frizz?

My frizz halo is just crazy. I have quite curly, pouffy hair, but I just had a really good curly cut which means I don't necessarily have to spend a long time smoothing and taming it anymore - it will sit naturally in a good shape. I'm dead chuffed actually, I've been trying to get a decent cut for years - that experience is a whole other unbelievable tale, worst and most unprofessional hair salon I've ever been to BUT the cut turned out amazing!

Sadly my frizz is beyond the pale. I've tried the Curly Girl method in the past with no joy, so I no longer spend hundreds on CG friendly products, but I have tried them all at one time or another!

If you wash and leave your hair without too much faffing, and have dry curly hair prone to big bushy frizz - what's your go to product to stick it down? I've been using Faith in Nature aloe vera conditioner and leaving a little in my hair, then adding a strong gel when wet. Once dry I scrunch out the crispy coating.

That looks reasonable until I've slept on it or walked out in wind/humidity etc - then the top layers look like I've been electrocuted. I've tried water and conditioner, and some gel, but it just springs up again when dry. I rather resemble coco the clown.

What can I try, that doesn't involve hours of faffing, and that I can use to refresh every now and then between washes?

I wish I knew. Mine is exactly the same. If I put loads of frizz killing products on my hair, it looks greasy and lank within half an hour.
I'm currently trying twice weekly deep conditioning, moisturising masks. No results as yet.
My hair seems destined to have a halo of frizz

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 19/07/2021 18:35

I have a keratin / Brazilian blow dry. It's the only thing that tames the frizz. My hair is wild left to its own devices.

Sallycinnamum · 19/07/2021 18:41

I sympathise OP.

I tried the CG method in lockdown last year and I lasted 2 weeks before I broke and washed my hair properly. It was bliss!

My hair looks great when it's been freshly washed but once I've slept on it I can't wear it down as it looks mental. I've tried a silk pillowcase and turban and it makes no difference.

I'm nearly 50 now and I've just got used to it now although I will say a dyson hairdryer made a big difference to calming the frizz when I bother to dry it.

ZaraW · 19/07/2021 18:56

I use Davines Oi oil on damp hair. It stops the frizz.

Beetlebrooker · 19/07/2021 19:05

@DidgeDoolittle Let's hope we get some new ideas! I feel as though I've tried everything (and taken notes virtually from lots of S&B threads), but I still have hope that I just haven't found the holy grail yet.

@OneRingToRuleThemAll I've had 4 of those - they are incredible its true, but my last one cost £190 and lasted less than a month. Sad

@Sallycinnamum I'm 49 this year and embracing the frizz a lot more amiably than before - I just still hope there might be something out there that works!

I last about 6 months on the CG method. When I angrily trashed the hundreds of pounds worth of products, gave my head and hair a good scrub with sulphate shampoo, then filled it full of silicone (Colour Wow Dreamcoat, gamechanger but only with heat) and straightened it, my DH was very happy and informed me that my hair was poodle-esque.

@ZaraW First product recommendation, thank you will go for a Google!

I've tried many oils and serums, none that have done much but I remain hopeful.

Oooo this is my problem too the other day I just thought let me try this and you know the pots you get from Garnier Ultimate blends I have the hair food banana and Shea. Well I wet my hair slightly and put it through with my fingers and lo and behold it looked good! I hate having product in my hair so always put it up...a friend recommended morrocon oil you can only buy online in a glass bottle it was bloody expensive and didn't really work as well as the Garnier...

Sallycinnamum · 19/07/2021 19:17

The only thing that works is mousse and leave in conditioner and not touching my hair. I've got a terrible habit of absentmindedly wrapping my hair around my fingers which my hairdresser always tell me off for.

I feel like I have literally tried every single curly product on the market. They always disappoint!

Dry hair is frizzy hair.

Make sure your protein/moisture balance is correct.

I do the curly girl method (but I never actually wear my hair curly, I just follow the ethos when choosing products)

Thatswhatmamasaid · 19/07/2021 19:48

I have similar hair and also recommend a Kerstin Blow Dry. Your hair will thank you.

How do you know of your protein/moisture balance is out of whack? My hair is dry, fluffy and frizzy. It's delightful.

The boucleme shampoo and conditioner (with the boucleme gel when I'm wearing it down) has worked wonders for my hair. I normally have to tie my hair back to control it but I've been able to wear it down using it

SweatyBetty20 · 19/07/2021 21:59

I use this - just a tiny squirt in the shower, comb through, then blot my hair with a towel upside down (no rubbing or combing) and then leave to dry. Has to be really quite wet so takes a couple of hours to dry. It’s appearing on Amazon rather than in the shops though, and I’m really shitting myself that it’s discontinued.

Olaplex TRANSFORMED my hair. I've used hair masks and sprays and mouses and gels and all kinds over the years and some have been better than others but I've never known a product actually seem to change my HAIR.

I hardly use any product any more - my hair just seems to hang out nicely on its own (and I never thought I'd say that).

whistlers · 19/07/2021 22:19

@DidgeDoolittle have a google on images. It's a stretch test! Good luck!

Paquerette · 19/07/2021 23:10

The problem with curly hair is sadly what works for some will not work for others. A PP recommended Bouclume. It made my hair look awful. Ditto Only Curls, DevaCurl products, Kevin Murphy, Aveda and way too many to mention. All curly hair is different. If I cowash I end up with greasy looking hair. The curly girl never brush or comb advice resulted in a horrendously tangled mess.

The only slightly helpful advice I can give is to use a silk pillowcase, curl friendly towel/old t-shirt and always apply products when your hair is soaking wet.

Personally if my hair seems really dried out, it actually needs a good detox shampoo. Conditioner or leave-in products containing any type of coconut product or a lot of oil leaves me with a frizzy mess for weeks. I also found leaving in a little conditioner after washing made my hair frizzier. Maybe it stops the products working so well?

Anyway, my personal favourite products now are Garnier Apple Cider Vinegar Blend shampoo, Living Proof frizz free conditioner, and Curlsmith Curl Defining Styling Soufflé. My hair isn’t perfect, but a lot less frizzy than it used to be.

supadupapupascupa · 19/07/2021 23:18

I wash with sls free conditioner, then use aveda oil then umberti gianini scrunching jelly to finish. And I frizz up in the humidity. Day one hair down pinned up from my face, day two onwards back in pony tail of banana clip.

itsureis · 19/07/2021 23:28

I use the cantu products; shampoo, conditioner and styling.
Apply when damp, leave to dry naturally and then scrunch out the crunch.

Some days it looks better than others but 9/10 it looks good.

You can sometimes find it on offer, 3 for 2 in Sainsbury's or Superdrug, so for around £6 per product it's not too expensive.

QueenBee52 · 19/07/2021 23:36

when you wash you hair and condition your hair.. towel dry .. add a teensy bit of conditioner and rub through.. and leave in.. it helps control frizz 🌸

audweb · 19/07/2021 23:40

Boots curl cream used to do the trick. Now cantu, or aunt jackies (any kind of their curl creams/-activators) works wonders. Stick it in when wet or damp, air dry, don’t touch. I spray my hair damp in the mornings to add product in.

lotsofchooksnducks · 20/07/2021 06:45

I use the tiniest smear of coconut oil (when hair is very wet after washing) just on the bottom 1/2 of my hair.
It works but it's hard getting the amount right and I can look like I've got greasy hair sometimes if I over-do it

DidgeDoolittle · 20/07/2021 12:04

The problem I have is that it's the very top of my head that is frizzy. If I put curl cream, conditioner or gel on there it makes my scalp itch.
I use Shea Moisture shampoo and conditioner and add Noughty curl cream to the lengths. I then put on Eco gel and let it air dry or diffuse. Then scrunch out the crunch with Wave oil. Still frizz on top and next day the lengths get goopy and drop. My hair is shoulder length and 2b- 3a.

Sawyersfishbiscuits · 20/07/2021 12:55

Hair oil when I get up, either Argan oil or Keratin. Put onto my handiness and then use 'prayer hands' to put it through.
Also John Frieda dream curls, curl activator works for me.

Sawyersfishbiscuits · 20/07/2021 12:57

I use Umberto Giannini Banana butter after washing which helps and I also sleep on a satin pillowcase.
