What do you use to glue down curly hair frizz?

My frizz halo is just crazy. I have quite curly, pouffy hair, but I just had a really good curly cut which means I don't necessarily have to spend a long time smoothing and taming it anymore - it will sit naturally in a good shape. I'm dead chuffed actually, I've been trying to get a decent cut for years - that experience is a whole other unbelievable tale, worst and most unprofessional hair salon I've ever been to BUT the cut turned out amazing!

Sadly my frizz is beyond the pale. I've tried the Curly Girl method in the past with no joy, so I no longer spend hundreds on CG friendly products, but I have tried them all at one time or another!

If you wash and leave your hair without too much faffing, and have dry curly hair prone to big bushy frizz - what's your go to product to stick it down? I've been using Faith in Nature aloe vera conditioner and leaving a little in my hair, then adding a strong gel when wet. Once dry I scrunch out the crispy coating.

That looks reasonable until I've slept on it or walked out in wind/humidity etc - then the top layers look like I've been electrocuted. I've tried water and conditioner, and some gel, but it just springs up again when dry. I rather resemble coco the clown.

What can I try, that doesn't involve hours of faffing, and that I can use to refresh every now and then between washes?

Ky jelly (seriously) also make sure your gel doesnt have humectants in them as they suck in moisture from the air which causes frizz, I tend to layer two gels on top of each other and make sure the last one doeznt have humectants

Thanks everyone for all the great suggestions - have stopped name checking as there are lots!

Have been trawling Amazon for ages (too hot to do much more than sit in the shade outside) looking at products to try.

Yesterday I gave my hair a wash through with some conditioner (only because I brought conditioner away with me by mistake instead of shampoo), rinsed and used my normal Faith in Nature conditioner and left a little of it in, and added some strong hold gel before air drying. Today it looks like this, after wetting it down about 4 times and adding more conditioner. 😕

I lightly spray my hair with water so it’s a little bit damp and then scrunch some umberto giannini curl jelly in. Does the trick!

ZaraW · 20/07/2021 15:22

Gel and leaving in conditioner left my hair feeling crunchy. When I wear my hair curly I use Olaplex 6 and Davines hair oil.

Beetlebrooker · 20/07/2021 17:10

It does feel soft but sort of straw like at the same time.

So with Olaplex, can you apply it and then air dry?

ZaraW · 20/07/2021 17:22

Yes, Olaplex 6 is a styling product. It's expensive but lasts ages as you don't need much.

Beetlebrooker · 20/07/2021 17:25

I've just put a bundle in my basket on Look Fantastic - pricey but it gets quite a lot of good reviews!

penguinwithasuitcase · 20/07/2021 17:30

Olaplex has 8 different products in the range - some are styling and others are treatments.

I had 1 and 2 done at a salon about 6 months ago, and then I use 3 as a once a week treatment, and the shampoo and conditioner. I've found I don't need any styling products at all now that the base is there.

And it is expensive, but you don't need to use much at all so a bottle goes a long way (my shampoo and conditioner are still half full after 3 months)

ReallyATiger · 20/07/2021 17:34

Tiny bit of coconut oil on wet hair

My hair's the same. Soft and crunchy.

I too have ordered a shop full of products. Let's hope that I don't have to consign them to the box of doom hidden under my bed.
My husband has no idea how much my hair costs. He'd be horrified.

EatingAllThePies · 20/07/2021 17:48

I do CG but not strictly so I shampoo about once a fortnight although a bit more in this weather. I sometimes use a little leave on conditioner, then I mousse then I use a gel. My trick is to make sure that's all dry before bed then my hair last a couple of days. Then I use a water based lube or a very light mousse to control the frizz but the frizz bothers me less than it used to as I feel people are becoming more accepting of hair that isn't straight.

FolornLawn · 20/07/2021 17:56

Olaplex 6 has Dimethicone really high up in the ingredients, so would something bog standard with loads of silicone in do the same for less dosh?

Beetlebrooker · 20/07/2021 19:36

I remember trying KY jelly on my hair! Sadly I don't recall it working miracles. Sad

I don't think anything ever worked for the top section, I tried layering on more and more gels - Eco, Cantu, whatever I was trying at the time - but the front left section still split and pouffed and went straightish, but now I had flaky gel residue as well.

Toying with the idea of having that bit cut shorter, like a side fringe or something. Although it will probably just make it worse...I have a cow lick so it never sits right anyway. I blame menopause.

Ha, that "No. 6 Bond Strengthener" isn't trying to be Olaplex much then! 🤣

DD's hair frizzes around her face. We recently got a Moroccan Hair oil based leave in conditioner/sylying product and it does seem to help. But needs to be applied generously, daily. I've also found using KMS tame frizz products effective. We use the hair treatment fairly often asa leave in conditioner.

I think using an innolux elixir product helped a lot to get the frizz under control in the first place, but I need to restart using it as we've been slack recently.

FazeleysRoyale · 23/07/2021 01:40

These work best for my curls:

BedHead - Foxy Curls. In a round purple bottle, a gel not a mousse. This is the best but I've run out.

Kevin Murphy - AntiGravity Oil Free Volumiser. Surprisingly- probably not the intended use as I think it's a blow-drying serum but works a treat scrunched through damp hair. I sometimes blow partly dry, gently, but I need a new diffuser.

Cantu Shea butter Curl Activator cream - my drunk internet purchase ! It's quite heavy and very creamy, so I use very sparingly. It works ok but easy to load too much on. It's the best one for refreshing in between washes and smells amazing.

I wash my hair once a week using very ordinary shampoo and conditioner ( Provoke Touch of Silver or Herbal Essences etc). My hairdresser said it's not frizzy at all. I think not using any dye or significant heat helps.

ouchmyfeet · 23/07/2021 06:43

My hair type is different to yours, wavy rather than curly, but very prone to frizz. I've never found the perfect product as my hair is a bit fine so easy to weigh down with products. This is the closet to perfection for me:

m.aveda.co.uk/product/20197/16265/styling/all-styling/brilliant-emollient-finishing-gloss#/shade/75_ml

Expensive but I repurchase over and over again which is rare for me as I get bored and need variety

miffmufferedmoof · 23/07/2021 07:26

I think rinsing my hair with cold water after I’ve finished washing it helps a bit (though you have to be brave to do this in winter!)

The only thing that makes my hair look properly groomed is to use my Toni & guy deep barrel waver on the top layer of frizz. It’s very quick to do but probably wouldn’t be good for the hair to do it all the time. I save it for special occasions and just accept looking scruffy the rest of the time

XingMing · 23/07/2021 16:06

Hersheson's Almost Everything Cream was my best find of last year; as small pump in sopping wet hair for me, but my sister with straighter hair loves it to smooth frizzy edges and flyaways. And very recently, I bought a couple of Kerastase products from their new Curl Manifesto line. I have a smoothing serum and an oil... but I prefer the serum, scrunched into wet hair. It does build up, so a really thorough wash is needed twice a week.

Jailbreak42 · 23/07/2021 16:12
@ZaraW First product recommendation, thank you will go for a Google!

I've tried many oils and serums, none that have done much but I remain hopeful.
Stop overloading it with products.

My hair is naturally curly and frankly looks fucking shit if I follow the curly girl method of never washing it and overloading it with geasy serums and products.

I use OGX shampoo and conditioner and boots curl creme. VO5 also have a nice frizz free cream. It looks best the day I wash it. I defuse it to set the curl and lift my roots. If it let it dry naturally, it looks limp and pathetic.

I suffer from the same problem and have also tried cupboards full of stuff.

I wonder about nano-keratin treatments. my hairdresser used their mask on my hair last time and it smelled lovely and made my hair very smooth - but just til I washed it. I read on their site that they have actual treatments, which he didn't offer me ,and I wonder if that might be a solution - it says the smooth the hair and reduce frizz, but don't straighten it, which would be amazing - smooth curls?! Especially that lasted overnight.

Mostly I used the giannini No More Frizz in a pink bottle, and it's OK for the first day or so. I haven't found anything that really lasts longer than that. Even Color Wow made my hair go limp and yet still frizzy.

Colour Wow did nothing for my hair. Just made it limp. I've also tried that 8 second miracle stuff. Didn't have any effect at all.

Well I am 50-odd and I am just about getting there with my curls!

I don't often give my hair a shampoo wash, but I wet it every morning and then apply Clairol herbal essences conditioner for coloured hair to lengths and ends (sometimes I apply the Curl Company enhance and perfect curl cream, sometimes a mix of both) then use a Denman brush - it's about the only brush I can use on my hair - previously, a wide-toothed comb was all I ever used. I never blow dry it - I always air-dry - but other than that I follow the routine of a girl called JaymeJo on YouTube. She uses the Denman brush to emphasise and define the curl - a bit like the way that you use a scissors blade to curl that metallic ribbon on gift wrapping. Curly hair is all different but I hope this helps.

vroc81 · 23/07/2021 20:29

Noughty wave hello shampoo and conditioner and hello curls spray and their third aid spray.. actually I swap the shampoo and conditioners about but stick both the sprays on after washing my hair and have had much reduced frizz and just nice bouncy curls..!

Azilliondegrees · 23/07/2021 20:34

My hair was absolutely beautiful in Cornwall. I suspect the soft water helped. I use umberto giannini curl jelly wash and care which are not curly girl approved but seem to be good for my hair
