Waxing

I'm fed up with shaving and struggling in certain areas... so thinking about looking into waxing. I would be looking at getting a beautician to do it as I'm not brave enough to attempt it myself.
As a newbie where is the least painful place to start? Any advice or recommendations?

I have had legs and bikini line done in the past.

If you are nervous just go for a half left wax to start but all areas are different so difficult to compare.

Now I just have bikini line done when off on hols and use an epilator on legs (fine) and armpits (need nerves of steel)

Honestly in my opInion waxing is fine - just have done what you need most. Take a paracetamol half an hour before hand if really worries ( I don't) and try and exfoliate day before and don't use moisturiser/lotion the day of a wax.

Oh and don't bother doing it yourself it's so messy abs difficult!

SummaLuvin · 17/07/2021 13:05

Bikini and underarms hurt more, but the areas are relatively small so are over and done with very fast. Legs are less painful, but because it’s a larger area and takes longer I find it more uncomfortable overall.

My advice is if you are having multiple areas get the most painful done first, for me that’s bikini, otherwise during the legs and underarms you get more and more nervous of the pain.

I have everything from the neck down waxed off every month. The Hollywood does sting a bit at first but as you get it done more often the pain gets less each time. Make sure you are exfoliating and moisturising though as waxing hair off dry scaly skin really hurts,

Thank you for your replies, appreciate it.
When I shave in the bikini area i do all of it and just leave a trimmed strip.
Would that be too much for a first time wax, would it be best to literally just do the bikini line first time? Also I know you need a certain amount of hair growth, but would it be best to trim back at all?
I know these beauticians see it all, but how do they have you positioned for it.
Sorry for all the questions Blush

That's so interesting ! I find it's the opposite
Legs extremely painful ... underarm not at all ... bikini bearable
I would suggest taking some paracetamol or ibuprofen before you go and start somewhere small
Just go for it , it's fab 😊

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 17/07/2021 17:37

Half an inch growth would give you enough to grip the wax well. Second taking a pill to kick in at the treatment time.

Birkie248 · 17/07/2021 17:54

Legs are ok, I found underarms very painful.

cherrypiepie · 17/07/2021 18:12

You could try a man extended bikini wax or a g string wax (same thing at two salons with a different name) - that's in between all off and a regular bikini wax.

ChippyTea16 · 17/07/2021 18:25

Id just go for it OP! It all depends on your pain threshold. If you’re wanting a Brazilian I’d just get it done first time, no need to ease your way in with just your bikini line.

Different salons will do different techniques. A ‘nice’ salon I used to go to would have me put a paper thong on that id move to the side for them to get to me. Usually lying on my back and lifting up one leg at a time. Then they ask if you want your bum doing (!) and I’d turn over and erm, spread my bum cheeks and one strip and that part would be done! Other places will have you turn on your side away from them and bring your knees up to do the back.

In other places I’ve worn nothing at all and just had them do their thing! Even hugging my knees to my chest while they do their thing! I can’t be bothered to be embarrassed and they’ve seen it all anyway!

The main thing is that a good place will get it done quickly (less than 10 mins) and efficiently and will be completely professional - no need to be embarrassed or worried about how you look!

Also agree with another poster, I find a Brazilian fine as it’s so quick but my god getting my legs done is so painful for me! So I epilate my legs and underarms and get my Brazilians done professionally.

Also don’t trim too much, they can do that if they need to I’m sure. Good luck! 🍀

I have "hot wax" for underarm and bikini line. This wax doesn't need a strip to be removed so it's less stingy than strip wax. I would maybe start with a straightforward bikini line, just so you know what to expect?

Thewinterofdiscontent · 17/07/2021 18:55

Brazilian here and fine. I quite like the sensation of warm wax on my bits! It doesn’t hurt much and it’s quick and then over.
Results are fab.
I wouldn’t bother with legs - epilators are easier and do shorter hair.
Underarms I could never grow out long enough to be waxed,

EmmaStone · 17/07/2021 19:37

I used to have legs and bikini line waxed, and have given up - waiting for the regrowth in order to have it long enough for the next appointment was just too annoying. I did buy a home IPL machine, and that's been fantastic, it must be 5+ years ago I bought it and used it regularly, and I now have hardly any hair growth in my armpits, legs and bikini line.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 17/07/2021 22:53

Hot wax is a really good option. Tends to be a bit more expensive, but the hot wax will open the pores and make the removal of the hair less painful. @CurbsideProphet has just reminded me, but I don't come across it much where I live, apart from a really £££ salon.

CurbsideProphet · 17/07/2021 23:18

@SpongeBobJudgeyPants I first had hot waxing done 10 years ago when I lived in London and had never even heard of it before. Now I'm in a very ordinary part of the NW and a few local salons offer it. I think it's become more mainstream in the past 5 years. I would never go back to strip wax on bikini line!

StarlightLady · 18/07/2021 06:19

I have all off. They give you the option of a paper thong but l honestly don’t see the point. Yes, you will be in some interesting positions, but as another poster said, there is nothing they haven’t seen before.

Armpits are not really a practical option though because of the regrowth.

I’d just go for it, rather than having some bits done. The first couple of times will leave you a little sensitive, but after that the body seems to settle down to it.

Definitely find somewhere that offers hot wax. It is nothing new, it was used in Ancient Roman bath houses. If you look at history, the Ancient Romans and Ancient Greeks were both big in hair removal.

Finally, l agree with others about taking a couple of pain killers before. Also, avoid being done just before a period and don’t have sex the same day after the wax.

ChrissyPlummer · 18/07/2021 06:43

Definitely find somewhere that uses proper hot wax that they remove by hand. Waxperts is the one I’ve found to be least painful. I have Hollywood and eyebrows done every 6-8 weeks. Used to get my legs done but never found it lasted much longer than shaving, I’d maybe get a week. I do have dark hair though.

I've booked in for this evening and I'm super nervous Confused

Jackiejoo · 27/07/2021 10:17

Since I've gotten a Philips Lumena I haven't been to a beautician it's much less hassle and lasts longer then shaving plus I must of saved on visits now.

Frymetothemoon · 27/07/2021 10:22

I love hot wax.
Remember OP, that the first time will be the worst, due to the roots being big - they grow back smaller.
I'm now at the point where I can almost fall asleep.
The result is always worth the small amount of pain

FizzBumblebee · 27/07/2021 19:48

Thank you, not long to go Confused

Livinthedream84 · 27/07/2021 20:35

Ive been thinking about this for the first time so im nervously waiting to see how the OP got on lol

FizzBumblebee · 27/07/2021 22:06

Well it's all done and the lady was lovely and I felt so at ease. We pretty much talked the whole way through.
When the first bit of wax was pulled off I said 'was that it' she said yes, wasn't too bad at all.
The inner parts smarted a bit but not as bad as I'd thought it would be, stopped talking briefly to breath lol then carried on chatting.
I will be going back again in around a month for the second wax.
I don't know what I was so nervous about Smile
