Men’s watch

Hi all, does anyone have any knowledge of men’s watches??! I have been saving for DHs big birthday and would like to find something special- happy to consider second hand..

He had omega already snd I don’t think he’s a Tag Heuer fan. I just wondered if there are any proper watch fans out there that could help. Max budget 2.3k… (I’ve been saving for ages so please no comments on budget as either being to big or small!)

Longines is a great brand and you can get a real nice one for your budget. Montblanc also make beautiful watches and are a very aspirational brand and tend to keep value very well. I have a Breitling and get lots of compliments on it. You should be able to get a decent one for your budget if you shop around. Your budget it good for a decent prime watch.

Another Omega if he likes that one

Check out Watchfinder or Chrono 24 for good preowned pieces. I'd look at Omega, Tag Heuer Monaco, possibly Grand Seiko (exquisite things but I'm not sure about the prices). Possibly consider a Seiko Tuna or a Seiko "Captain Willard".

Thank you all- I will look at all of those.

Have you considered a used breitling or similar ? There are loads of places that sell nearly new watches with warranties etc . My dh is really into watches so I'll ask him .

Ireolu · 13/07/2021 09:40

Breitling or another omega watch. He will like whatever you choose I am sure.

Have you looked at Bremont - company set up by 2 british brothers and highly regarded - my husband is a watch lover and he has one of these in his 'collection'.

petitdonkey · 13/07/2021 12:16

Oh so much choice! I’m going to get our son to help me choose so I’ve been sending him all your links. Thank you for taking the time!

Does DH have any knowledge of watches OP?

That’s a lot of money to spend on a surprise watch if he ‘knows’ his brands. Will you be discussing what to get before you purchase?

Watches would be a money pit if I won the lottery. knowing they’re marked up 5 or 6 times helps me keep my money in my pocket.

If he has an Omega now, I’m assuming it’s a dress watch.
Would he prefer something different? Something loaded with features like a high end Casio Edifice or Pro-Trek?

Nesbo · 13/07/2021 13:27

I think if he is into watches it would be best to discuss with him first. He could have a very specific watch he would love for that amount of money, and it would be such a shame to spend that much and only get it almost right.

I used to work at a posh jewellers, we sold Bremont which I love and got my H to buy one. Otherwise I would suggest Breitling, Cartier (they seem to be a bit out of fashion at the moment but I think they are very classic) or if you can find one a pre owned Patek.

CardiCorgi · 13/07/2021 14:00

Something less well known? DH admired a Nomos watch for a long time before a big birthday and I’ve noticed a colleague with one too.

petitdonkey · 13/07/2021 15:12

@tanstaafl - he knows watches a bit. He also has three Corum watches and a Patek but they tend to get saved ‘for best’ and he just wears his Apple Watch day to day!! My budget would be for something relatively casual ie the pub, dinner out. I can’t compete with his fancier ones!!!

I honestly can’t think of anything else for his fiftieth- I’m liking the idea of getting a lesser known brand. I feel confident that he will love anything I choose as he’s very sentimental!

The Bremont are beautiful but all seem beyond budget… I like the Nomos. They are stocked with Watches of Switzerland so I’m thinking I might book an appointment in store with them snd go and get advice and make a choice with my son.

What about an Ebel? They're similar to Omega but less well-known. I love mine.
