Bleaching Teenage Boy's Hair

Can anyone advise on this?

My son is on summer holiday. He has brown hair and wants me to bleach it white/blonde.

His hair is very short. What would be the simplest way of doing it?

Also if he doesn't like it would an application of colourb4 get it back to his natural colour? Or could I dye it brown?

No, colour B4 removes added colour whereas you are bleaching the colour out of it. You can dye it darker again though. You will need bleach and maybe a toner or purple shampoo

Thanks. Have bought a box dye. Hopefully won't make a mess of it. Have some brown dye in already if needs be!

Box dye may not lighten much. What did you get? Did you buy a lightening kit with bleach?

TotorosCatBus · 12/07/2021 18:52

I've watched people do it on YouTube. This might be best for working out which bleach is good.

This is what I got. I was a bit bamboozled. I have brown hair so generally just box dye it brown. Lightening is something I haven't done before.

There were other boxes that said they lightened more tones than that but the before and after pics of hair shades, that are similar to my son's didn't look as light as this one. I don't want it to end up orange. Should I take it back and go to a Sally's beauty supply type place?

Not a hairdresser but do bleach my own hair from v dark brown to blonde. That end result looks quite yellow; does he want to be golden blonde natural ish, or is he aiming for peroxide white?
I go peroxide blonde- proper white. Use a powder bleach and 40% solution- think it's Jerome Russell?

He seems uncertain between white and yellow. I suppose I mainly want to avoid orange. I'll look up Jerome Russell.

I have short hair which I bleach at home. I’d say that box dye is probably okay, but I’d recommend mixing up half of it (should be enough to cover short hair), and bleaching for the time recommended on the box. If it’s not light enough for his liking, do a purple toner deep condition (just leave purple conditioner on for about 30mins and rinse out) and then the following day use the other half of the box dye to bleach again, and tone it again. That should be enough to lift the colour and make it lighter blonde. The hair won’t be as healthy as it was but that’s always going to happen with home bleaching, so long as you use a good conditioner it should be fine.

Yes that should work fine, you can get purple toning shampoo too if you want to double up but it shouldn’t be needed.

Also a good tip is use more than you think. it dosent lather like shampoo so paint it on thick. I might take a couple of tries to get it not orange if he has red undertones in the brown.

My son is wanting to do this also, thanks to the Barcelona player Yamal! But he is already dark blonde so I worry it will be disastrous. Any tips are most welcome if anyone has experience, I'm wondering if they still sell Sun-in like I used as a teen 🤣
